With so many horses running in these handicaps, it can be difficult to narrow them down. Lots are in with chances and, of course, luck can play a part. I like this mare's chance of being involved at the finish after finishing seventh in last year's renewal. A good, placed effort in a decent handicap at Gowran Park in January. Unlike last year, she skipped Cheltenham and has been kept fresh for this. She is the choice of Jack Kennedy. A good few of these horses had hard races at Cheltenham, so that could enable the selection to improve on last year's seventh-placed finish.

This horse has a good record over hurdles and won the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham two years ago. He's lightly raced and has been chasing of late, finishing sixth of eighteen in a novice chase at Cheltenham last month. An interesting contender back hurdling.

Trainer Joe Tizzard felt this horse was progressing well and sent him off to Sandown last month to contest a deep C1 handicap. That was clearly a step too far, but back in calmer waters here there's every chance of going close, with Brendan Powell taking the ride. This horse easily won a C4 race here at Plumpton in February.

Tried over the larger obstacles most recently but looks better over hurdles. Has won at this course and at this distance and with Mark Walsh in the plate and five places on offer is worth an each-way bet. Needs to improve from recent chase efforts, but if the return to hurdling sparks a return to form he could go close.

Won this race last year from just 2 lb lower. Whilst he's not the force of old, on a going day he can be competitive at this level. For me, he's the value bet with the jockey who won on him last year back in the plate. Drops in grade following a third-place finish at Newbury last month.

I've changed my mind several times regarding a selection for this race. There are a couple of others I also like, but this horse was the first that stood out to me, so I'll stick with it. He returns to the flat after a couple of unsuccessful attempts at hurdling. If ready to roll after a three-month break, he should be involved. Independent Expert is also worth an each-way bet at longer odds.

Another risky pick, as the recent form of this horse is not inspiring. There are four reasons I think an each-way bet might be worthwhile. First is the drop in class into a C6. It last ran and won a C6 over three years ago. Second is the step up in trip. Third is the jockey booking. Fourth is the mark of 9 lb below the last winning mark. Probably now or never.

Could outrun his odds.
