King William Rufus

King William Rufus is dropping in class here, with his last five runs being in Class 3s and 1s. He's proven he can win at Ascot, having won here this time last year. He seems to run better in slower-paced races, with all his triple-figure FSP% coming from even or slow races. The forecast sets this up for a weak pace. There might be an argument that slightly firmer ground would suit him better, but soft ground won't be too much of a worry. Given that Let It Rain has not been seen for nearly a year, I'm prepared to take an each-way chance with five places available even with his high mark.

They Call Me Hugo has scored an impressive point-to-point win, made a winning debut under rules at Ffos Las, and appears to stay well on testing ground. I think the big question mark will be the level of race he's contesting in, but he looks capable of defying his inexperience.

This five-year-old ran a credible race at Ascot last time, having been dropped in trip, and was travelling well before lacking late on. Returning to this distance will suit significantly better, I feel. Harry Cobden going against his retainer in this one adds a little bit of confidence.

This is a bit of a speculative selection that is banking on progressive improvement rather than proven form. With 4 places on offer, I believe this horse is capable of outrunning expectations, and given the demands at Cheltenham, surprises often occur. The gelding seems to suit even-pace races, which various heat maps seem to indicate will likely occur here too.

Another speculative long shot today. That is banking on progressive improvement from a horse against stronger-looking opponents. But given how competitive this race looks and the demands of Cheltenham, I believe our boy Stan is the pick of the outsiders. If he can continue to improve his bumper form, he could land here at a nice price.

With odds of 11.00 in what looks a competitive five-runner chase, this represents a speculative each-way opportunity. There is limited course form to draw upon, and a career-best effort will need to be produced. The trainer's record stands at wins from 17 at Newcastle but has on occasion landed big-priced winners before. This is very much an outside play, banking on improvement in an open-looking race. Double-figure odds only for those seeking long-shot value.

Skelton's dropping this gelding sharply after two credible Grade 2 efforts: third in the Persian War at Chepstow and fifth behind No Drama This End at Cheltenham. The horse is returning from wind surgery, but this listed-placed bumper performer looks too much for this maiden. Dan Skelton is 27% from 119 runners at Warwick, well above his 18% overall average, and Harry has five winners from his last 14 rides (35%).

The Henry De Bromhead-trained gelding makes his 2nd chase start after finishing fourth at Navan behind the impressive Kopek Des Bordes. He won a maiden hurdle here last season and was placed in Grade 2 company over hurdles. De Bromhead's yard excels at developing chase horses, and runners generally improve significantly for fencing experience. The progressive profile appeals despite modest course stats.

Needed the run last time out, I think, after a long break. Looks well suited to the ground even if conditions worsen during the morning. A lot of the runners appear to be prominent types, but Sunset Marquesa seems to handle various pace scenarios, having won last year in even and fast-pace races. My personal speed figures have her towards the top end, not far behind Northern Symphonie, who is running off a 175-day break, so in my opinion is unlikely to reach their best today. Trainer Joe Tizzard is also showing great profit to level stakes in hurdles so far this season, with +118 pts from 66 runs and 17 wins.

Some Scope

Some Scope has not shown much in his last few outings. However, if you look at the races where pace and conditions were more in his favour, you get a place in a Class 2 at Uttoxeter and a win this time last year in a Class 1 at this course. He's dropped a bit on his mark, and with the drop in class and a return to a course he appears to enjoy, with a pace setup likely in his favour, I'm expecting him to return to form today. Kilbarry Hill and If Not for Dylan are in the same position as Some Scope and both are looking to get back into form. However, their best is not in the same class as Some Scope in my opinion, and neither has a Class 1 win under their belts.

Smoke Trail

Ordinarily I would not normally look at a 3-runner race, but all three runners appeared in my tracker inbox, so my interest was piqued. Out of the three, Mydaddypaddy clearly seems the pick. You could argue all day over who is better between Smoke Trail and Kosac D'oudairies. I would lean slightly in favour of Smoke Trail. In this 3-runner affair no horse should be double figures. Mydaddypaddy so far hasn't had to run a fast pace start to finish; he's won both outings in slow and even-paced races. If Smoke Trail can push a fast early pace, which is possible, he's proved he can finish strongly in his last outing. How likely that is to happen with only three runners does cast some doubt, but I think the market has seriously underestimated Smoke Trail's chances, and I'm happy to take a small chance on an upset here even though Mydaddypaddy looks the much better horse on paper.

Believitanducan hasn't really run badly in the last 18 months. A sixth of ten back in January in a Grade 2 affair is still somewhat respectable in this company. Strong finishing sector times, even in fast-paced races, indicate he will likely suit the strong pace expected here and have the stamina to finish. Jackstell, while looking dangerous on form, has previously come unstuck in early fast-pace scenarios, especially when the pace holds throughout. Grenadier Jed has too many questions to answer here for me.

In a race with a healthy amount of runners, there is not an abundance of in-form horses in the field. Wholly Boley is a horse that caught my eye while looking at the likely pace of the race. All his best performances have come in races that have been run at slow to moderate pace (Hexham on 3rd Oct/last year over the summer). Wholly Boley is likely to be the horse that sets the pace in this scenario and does seem to show a preference for the ground and distance. With four places available, this looks a great each-way bet.
