Northern trainer Ollie Pears is 2/3 with his runners at Newton Abbot, and Sam Twiston-Davies has 1 winner and 1 second on rides for the yard. So, stats fans will be all over this. A wind-op seems to have made a big difference to the 5-year-old, and front-runners have a good record at this tight track with a short run-in.

Dianne Sayer's team are in cracking form, and she can add to her recent good run with her 7-year-old hurdler, Simple Star. A keen-going sort, a change of tactics appeared to fail at Kelso 39 days ago when runner-up to Impero, an Irish runner who looked in a different league on the day. He finished 11 lengths clear of the third, however, and Henry Brooke, a jockey who knows him well, has the option of making it if the pace is not deemed to be strong enough. A CD winner in a Class 4, he's dropped two grades here from his last run.

Mel Rowley's mare sprung a surprise over CD just over a month ago, and I fancy her to back that up from 6lb higher. She seemed to appreciate the hold-up ride Charlie Deutsch gave her, the jockey who was aboard her only previous success at Hereford last October. This will be the 6-year-old's third run since her wind-op, which seems to have had a positive effect, and this big field will suit the new tactics employed.

I think this slight drop in trip helps Sue Gardner's mare to get off the mark here. She ran well at Wincanton in March under a front-running ride over 2m4f, only to get collared near the line. She backed that up 22 days ago at Market Rasen, leading all the way until falling 2 out over a further half-a-mile. In fairness, the 5yo had been joined by the winner when falling, and I would have been surprised if she had held on. This track is a front-runner's dream with its short run-in, and if all eight run, I'll be surprised if she's out of the frame.

Winner of the Commonwealth Cup here last year, I think Kevin Ryan's 4yo is the one to beat here. He reportedly was "left a bit short" for his seasonal debut in the G2 Clipper Stakes at YTork's Dante meeting, but still managed to win under an inspired Ryan Moore ride. This has been his target.

With Aiden O'Brien having bagged six winners at the meeting already going into Friday, it could be time for son Joseph to get in on the act. Easy winner of a G1 in Germany last August following his second in the Eclipse, he had little chance in the Arc with a medium pace & a less than inspired ride. He reappeared in February where he reportedly tied-up in a G2 in Riyadh over an extended 1m 2f & found the trip too sharp again in a G1 in Longchamp 55 days ago. Freshened up for this , over his optimum trip, what we have here I believe is a G1 horse running in a G2 race for which you can get 6/1

Ralph Beckett's unbeaten Amiloc looks the one to be with. Not the most straitforward, as his dam was somewhat tricky & looked to be going nowhere in the Goodwood Listed race he won last month, but once hitting the mile pole, he just took off to run out an easy 4l winner. This extra furlong can only help & I don't think connections know how good he is yet.

The Charlie Appleby runner will have to bounce back from two below-par runs at Meydan and Ascot. Although his last run over an inadequate 6f wasn't too bad considering it was a Group 3 race. The slight ease in the ground shouldn't bother the Godolphin runner, and it shouldn't be forgotten he beat the subsequent French Derby winner last September at Doncaster.

This looks good each way. Despite there being 16 runners, I can't see any pace in the race apart from the selection. Cian Collins' 6yo has failed to last home at Fairyhouse and Punchestown in his last two outings, but it'll be a different story around this tight track, especially if, as I hope, he has an easy time of it up front.
