In an open race, I'll go for Gordon Elliott's rapidly improving 7-year-old to complete the hat-trick. This is by far his toughest test, but he will have his optimum conditions in a field of mostly exposed chasers. As fast as the groundsman waters to ensure yielding ground in the morning, the course dries out during the day. I'm hopeful it'll be close to good going by 6:00 pm.

Moved from Patrick Neville's Yorkshire yard to flat trainer Dylan Cunha, the combination of new surroundings and tactics have certainly done the trick. A front-running good jumper, this place looks made for him and is certainly worth an each-way bet at his overpriced odds.

Despite getting hit with a 10lb rise, I think Neil Mulholland's 7yo is the one to beat. Despite this being a stronger Class 5 handicap on paper, everything that finished behind the selection at Sedgefield to have run over hurdles has run creditably, and the time was good for the grade.

A big field allied with a decent pace can get Sam England's free-going 6yo finally off the mark over hurdles, after a run of four seconds. His mark hasn't really moved in that time, and I'm hoping the sound surface can improve him on a third run after a wind-op.

Nick Alexander's juvenile is a bit of a handful but also talented, and his mark of 100 looks generous, especially minus the 8lb pull for being a 4yo. This big field and good pace will surely suit the keen-going sort and is worth an each-way punt.

One of the obstacles facing Anthony McCann's mare, apart from the 8 flights of hurdles, is her recent trait of being slowly away, whether over jumps or on the flat. It didn't stop the 6-year-old bolting up in a maiden hurdle at Gowran last month. I do like a maiden/novice hurdle winner contesting their first handicap, and the 3lb rise for 21 lengths (which could've been anything) looks more than fair. In addition, Whimsy will love this ground. She was entered yesterday over 2m4f, but I think has wisely opted for this 2m race instead.

On the negative side, Harry Derham's mare is having her first hurdling experience in mixed company, but I firmly believe the unexposed 5-year-old is the one to be on. Winner of a weak maiden here in November, she has then had to run in a couple of warm novices carrying a penalty, culminating in the 100k Kelso mares race, her first handicap, last month. On goes the tongue tie, and with a big drop in grade allied to a decent surface, I think a big run is on the cards.

The ground is riding pretty quick at Haydock as I write this, but they are forecast 14 hours of rain, albeit not heavy, from Friday evening until Saturday lunchtime. So what effect that will have on watered ground is moot. In going for Tom Lacey's 9yo, I'm sure he'll be fine on either good or good to soft going, and he appears to be on a winning mark.

This looks like an impossible race on the face of it, so I would recommend BOG about Nicky Henderson's 7yo if you can get it, as he might go off even bigger than 14/1. It seems his chasing career has been put on hold for the time being, but a mark of 119 looks far from insurmountable. With the yard having winners everywhere this week, he gets a sporting ew vote.

Two miles on good ground looks the ideal trip and going for Micky Hammond's 5yo. In an open race, the top weight looks the value racing only 3lb more than when winning a similar race at Wetherby 16 days ago under today's claimer. Looking at his flat form, there's probably improvement to come from a rating of 98.

I'm a bit surprised to find Nicky Henderson's 6yo at a double-figure price, especially given the good effort he showed at Newbury three weeks ago. This handicap is not as competitive as it looks & with bookmakers offering enhanced place terms, the topweight looks worth an each-way play. In my opinion, Anthony Charlton's 6yo should be the favorite here. Following a wind-op and the application of a tongue-tie, he ran out an easy winner here over 1/2 furlong shorter in his first handicap. An ex-PTP winner, the further he goes up in trip, the better. I'll be surprised if he doesn't go very close.

Much has been made of Beauport's need to go right-handed judged on his Midland National win just over a year ago when he continually jumped to the right, yet still prevailed on desperate ground. I think the positives to concentrate on are the improvement shown since running over long distances allied to a decent surface. Twister's 9yo has run over 70% of his races on soft/heavy ground, so I'm hoping there's a bit more to come. He's certainly been laid out for this since his 30l+ romp at Ascot last November.

I fancy Olly Murphy's staying hurdler to repeat last year's win at a course he loves and on ground that suits. He's had a wind-op following Ascot's Long Walk debacle in December and underwhelmed in the Cleeve Hurdle on Cheltenham's Trials Day. But Prestbury has never been his track, and back to the venue of his greatest success, he looks the one to be on.

Olly Murphy's unexposed 9yo looks the one to be on here. He's not been the easiest to train, missed all last season, but connections can be rewarded for their patience here. He won at Taunton just over two years ago off 5lb lower despite going for home probably a bit soon under 12-0 over the farthest trip he's faced (2m7f). He's had one run since then at Kempton last November 2nd over an inadequate trip, and I believe this race has been targeted since.

The Killahena/McPherson yard are absolutely flying at the moment with their last three runners being successful and 2 seconds from a further 3 runners in March. The authorities are pouring water on the National course in an attempt to stop it being too quick, with temperatures set to hit the low 70s tomorrow. The National course is currently quicker than the Mildmay hurdle track. Consequently, I've gone for the second-season 9-year-old chaser Marble Sands, who will appreciate the drying conditions. This strong stayer wants a galloping track and is pretty consistent for this type of horse. A sound each-way bet.

This is more open than the betting suggests, and the Bailey/Nichols 5yo is no 10/1 chance. He made a spectacular hurdling debut at Doncaster in November last year and subsequently got beat at short odds at Wetherby the following month. I'm happy to put a line through his handicap debut on soft ground at Taunton in February, a run for which he's been dropped 5lb. He was half-decent on the flat with a rating of 87, so a mark of 111 over hurdles looks well within his compass.

He's 5lb higher than when winning over an extended 1m7f at Wincanton on Boxing Day, and this extended 2m1f around a sharp track like Fontwell may well prove to be his optimum trip.
