Venetia Williams' yard has yet to hit form this season, and her runners have tended to need their first run. Her 7-year-old shaped well on his seasonal debut at Cheltenham's Open meeting. With the pace likely to be fast and furious here for a long-distance race, stamina will be at a premium, which will suit last season's Midland National runner-up.

On official ratings, Dan Skelton's 7yo has 6 lb to find with Il Etait Temps, winner of the Celebration Chase here in April. However, L'Eau Du Sud looks to be improving fast, judged by his easy victory in the Schloer Chase at Cheltenham's Open Meeting, and might be the value here.

Dan Slelton's 9yo has dropped 11 lb in the handicap since his first run of last season and shaped as if he'll come on plenty for his run at Carlisle 34 days ago. He finished 8th in the 2024 Grand National, so these fences will hold no fears for him and he will appreciate every drop of rain that falls at the Liverpool track.

I can't remember North Yorkshire trainer Micky Hammond sending a runner down south to Sandown, so on that fact alone it's worth giving his 7-year-old a second glance. The front two in the market have one chase run between them, and at this track it's important to get into a jumping rhythm. The best recent form over fences seems to be with the outsider of five.

Second here over 3m at the Showcase meeting, connections were surprised how well he came up the hill considering how keen he'd been. Despite winning the last two runnings of this race, it can't be ignored that Jonbon's form around here seems to be 7lb below his runnings elsewhere. He's not getting any younger and having his first run since a wind-op. At the prices, I'm inclined to look elsewhere. I've always been a fan of Libberty Hunter and he'll have his ground, but so many of Evan Williams' horses have needed the run. You can't say that about the Skelton yard, and despite a few pounds short on the book, he's the obvious improver.

Cumbrian trainer George Bewley, whose last two runners have won at Ayr on Saturday at 33/1 & 12/1, has, I believe, a well-handicapped hurdler on his hands in the shape of his 5yo, Mornington Beach. Runner-up to a 1/4 chance in a novice hurdle at Hexham over two miles behind a 1/4 chance 35 days ago on his second run after a wind-op, he makes his handicap debut off what seems a lenient 97, especially as being a PTP winner, he's sure to improve for the extra half-mile.

Paul Nicholls has touted his 5yo as a possible Champion Chase contender. If the hype is correct, he should win this off a mark of 156 despite giving weight to some good handicappers.
