Henry Daly has three entered for this mares' handicap chase, and I'm assuming Sam Twiston-Davies would have had the pick. She won a competitive handicap at the Cheltenham December Meeting, for which she's only 2 lb higher, and found the extended 2m 7f over hurdles on heavy ground at Sandown on New Year's Eve much too testing.

Micky Hammond's mare has had very little racing for a 9-year-old and, as such, looks too big a price. On her third chase run she ran a promising race when runner-up over C&D at the beginning of the month. A repeat will see her go close from the same mark.

Joseph O'Brien's French import looks well-handicapped to me over fences. Twice a winner on heavy ground in France, he's related to a couple of useful sorts and was made favourite on his yard debut for a 2m handicap at Cheltenham's Open Meeting last November. The cheekpieces he wore for both his French wins are back on.

Alastair Ralph's 7-year-old made a promising reappearance at Hereford just before Christmas following a 339-day absence. The race is working out remarkably well ??" the first two won next time out, the fifth ran well, and the fourth is yet to run. That was on soft ground, over the same trip, and at a track similar to Ascot.

What caught my eye here is a Middleham (N. Yorks) trainer booking a jockey based in the South West, where, to the best of my knowledge, Brian Carver has never ridden for Micky Hammond before. His 9yo usually competes in a grade above this race and failed to stay 3 miles last time at Wetherby.

Rebecca Menzie's 7yo ran as if well handicapped when second at Wetherby on Boxing Day over two furlongs shorter. You can put a line through his run at Newcastle 17 days ago, where he was badly hampered 4 out after travelling well. The rise in trip should be no problem on such a sharp track.

Nick Alexander's 7yo is on a mark he can win off if he can just cut out the mistakes. He's run two solid races over CD, and this will be only his fourth run over fences, so improvement is not out of the question.

Alastair Ralph's 8-year-old won at Haydock after 665 days off last December and can win again here from a 4 lb higher mark. I think you can put a line through her effort at Windsor 35 days ago. She didn't seem suited by the sharp track on the good going, and the bounce factor may have played a part too.

Craig Nicol's 9yo is a multiple winner here on the flat and over hurdles. Looking at his profile, it seems he's better on a decent surface rather than deep ground, and he looked ring??'rusty as far as hurdling goes when running here over 2m 4f on soft going on New Year's Day. He's had another run on the AW since, and his yard have won with their last two runners over hurdles with this conditional aboard.

Micky Hammond's 6yo looks the unexposed one here. He wouldn't have been suited by either track or going when making a bad mistake 4 out at Catterick 34 days ago. He's much better judged on his soft-ground third here on Boxing Day, and this extra half-mile will be in his favour.

James Hannon has got his small yard in decent form, and his 7-year-old looks a bet here. He ran two decent races over hurdles in December on testing ground, the last one at Limerick, which is not dissimilar to this track apart from the Thurles uphill finish. He flopped last time over fences, for which he was made favorite, and Darragh O'Keefe is an unusual booking for the yard.

Nick Gifford's 6yo came unstuck in his bid for a four-timer at Lingfield 32 days ago, but there are reasons to forgive that run. He was partnered by a conditional and continued to jump and rear right. Here, on this right-handed track, he'll be reunited with regular partner James Davies and is too big a price to ignore.

Jonjo's 9yo can be frustrating, but his form over 3m+ entitles him to win this. He would have won Ascot's Silver Cup four weeks ago with a few more strides when finishing well to be beaten by 1/2 length, and can make amends here.

Fergal O'Brien looks to be hitting form with a double today (Thursday, Newcastle & Ludlow). His unexposed stayer can add to the tally. He beat a Murphy/Bowen hotpot at Uttoxeter four weeks ago, with untold in hand on his first attempt at a staying trip. That was on deep ground, and the more rain the course gets the night before, the better.
