Up 5lb, a repeat of the CD win 26 days ago would appear to be enough. Ewan Whillans yard is in fine form & his lightly-raced 5yo should have more improvement in him, particularly as he goes up in trip.

Not a favourite horse of mine, but the fact the O'Neill 8yo has dropped 13 lb in 18 months prior to winning last month at Newcastle, his first win since Jan 2022, can't be ignored. He wore cheekpieces for that win for the second time. He ran well when he first wore them at Cheltenham's Showcase meeting last October and retains them for today.

Hopefully, Fergal O'Brien's 8-year-old will get a solo out in front. He stays farther than this, as his 15-length rout at Uttoxeter last November showed in another 5-runner race. He ran a pleasing race at Cheltenham 151 days later in a similar class race as here. There are queries about the other four runners, especially the favorite, who looks very short considering he's running from a 9-pound higher mark than he's ever contested before, allied with the rise in grade, the first time in a class 3.

Adam Nichol's front-running 7yo looks interesting in the first time blinkers. He may have found the combination of a Cl4 handicap allied with his third run in 22 days too much when running an uncharacteristically poor race at Ayr 26 days ago. Although never having run here before, this tight hurdles track, only a mile round, should suit him down to the ground.

Two things are true about Richard Bandey's 8yo: he's thoroughly exposed, but he's also well handicapped. I think this is his optimum trip and ground. On form going back 18-30 months, he'd be slung in. Worth chancing each-way at the price.

The Pogson's 7yo is quite aptly named because if he gets into a good jumping rhythm out in front, he will take some catching. This is only his third run over fences and he has looked green in both his outings so far, particularly in his last run at Haydock when he went right over the first two and had it on his mind to return to the stables at the turn after the winning post. Obviously, he takes some knowing, but Robbie Dunne gets on very well with him and there appears to be plenty of improvement to come.

This looks like a match on paper between two unbeaten fillies with little to separate them on the book. With a slight question mark about the Irish contender's stamina on this stiff track, despite having won the Breeders Cup Juvenile over a mile, I'll go with the Charlie Appleby favorite whose connections couldn't be more bullish.

Like the Guineas, this looks a match on paper with, again, slight stamina concerns about both the two main protagonists, although 9f may prove to be the optimum for both. Running Lion went 1.01 on the exchanges in running last year when going clear before hanging and getting caught. I don't think Oisin Murphy will go so early today, and the Gosden 5yo is the bet.

According to connections, Harry Derham's 8-year-old appreciates the better ground as he gets older. Well, he certainly appreciated the drying going at Ffos Las 27 days ago, and a 5lb rise is unlikely to stop him, seeing as that victory was off his lowest ever mark. The trainer was considering running at Fontwell 5 days later, but I believe this was the target all along, as he was second in this race last year off 8lb higher.

With the favorite having her 3rd run in 15 days, the Nicholls/Bailey 7yo must be worth an each-way play in his second handicap chase. Apart from an uncharacteristic shoddy round of jumping at Cheltenham's International meeting in December, he has been largely consistent in his other four chase runs.

In an open race, I'll go for Gordon Elliott's rapidly improving 7-year-old to complete the hat-trick. This is by far his toughest test, but he will have his optimum conditions in a field of mostly exposed chasers. As fast as the groundsman waters to ensure yielding ground in the morning, the course dries out during the day. I'm hopeful it'll be close to good going by 6:00 pm.

Despite getting hit with a 10lb rise, I think Neil Mulholland's 7yo is the one to beat. Despite this being a stronger Class 5 handicap on paper, everything that finished behind the selection at Sedgefield to have run over hurdles has run creditably, and the time was good for the grade.

A big field allied with a decent pace can get Sam England's free-going 6yo finally off the mark over hurdles, after a run of four seconds. His mark hasn't really moved in that time, and I'm hoping the sound surface can improve him on a third run after a wind-op.

Nick Alexander's juvenile is a bit of a handful but also talented, and his mark of 100 looks generous, especially minus the 8lb pull for being a 4yo. This big field and good pace will surely suit the keen-going sort and is worth an each-way punt.

One of the obstacles facing Anthony McCann's mare, apart from the 8 flights of hurdles, is her recent trait of being slowly away, whether over jumps or on the flat. It didn't stop the 6-year-old bolting up in a maiden hurdle at Gowran last month. I do like a maiden/novice hurdle winner contesting their first handicap, and the 3lb rise for 21 lengths (which could've been anything) looks more than fair. In addition, Whimsy will love this ground. She was entered yesterday over 2m4f, but I think has wisely opted for this 2m race instead.

On the negative side, Harry Derham's mare is having her first hurdling experience in mixed company, but I firmly believe the unexposed 5-year-old is the one to be on. Winner of a weak maiden here in November, she has then had to run in a couple of warm novices carrying a penalty, culminating in the 100k Kelso mares race, her first handicap, last month. On goes the tongue tie, and with a big drop in grade allied to a decent surface, I think a big run is on the cards.

The ground is riding pretty quick at Haydock as I write this, but they are forecast 14 hours of rain, albeit not heavy, from Friday evening until Saturday lunchtime. So what effect that will have on watered ground is moot. In going for Tom Lacey's 9yo, I'm sure he'll be fine on either good or good to soft going, and he appears to be on a winning mark.

This looks like an impossible race on the face of it, so I would recommend BOG about Nicky Henderson's 7yo if you can get it, as he might go off even bigger than 14/1. It seems his chasing career has been put on hold for the time being, but a mark of 119 looks far from insurmountable. With the yard having winners everywhere this week, he gets a sporting ew vote.

In an open race, the top weight looks the value racing only 3lb more than when winning a similar race at Wetherby 16 days ago under today's claimer.
