I've held on until this morning before backing Liz Doyle's 8yo in case of heavy rain, but the going is good/yielding with a dry, breezy day forecast. Also, the messages are mixed regarding breeding at this trip, but he wasn't stopping 12 days ago at Tramore over half a mile shorter on his chasing debut. So, I'm hopeful rather than confident. What I am sure of is how well he jumped the first time over fences, and with improvement expected, he could be the value in the race.

But for a mistake at the last at Ballinrobe last month, I believe Ross O'Sullivan's 5yo would've gone very close. It was well supported that day in a better race than this and has been dropped 2lb. Must be worth a bet.

Normally, you would avoid one who's gone up 13 lb in two runs for not winning like the plague, but there are reasons to think Charlie Johnstone's progressive 3yo may still have enough to gain a much-deserved success here. That age group has a particularly good record in this race, and the race in which he got collared late on at Goodwood is working out well.

Henry De Bromhead's mare has been running consistently well in her three runs this summer. I don't think she quite got home in the Galway Blazers at the start of the month. This drop in trip and sharper track can only help the 7-year-old, and I make her a strong each-way bet.

Much will depend on the start, as if Roger Varian's 4-year-old blows it like he did at Goodwood, his chance would be severely compromised. On several occasions last season, he looked listed or even Group class, and the trainer does like to target this race, having won it twice in the last ten years (including last year). 4-year-olds have an incredible record in this race, and seeing as there are only three entered here (including the 2nd favorite), there's room for a saver if that's your bag.

After having no luck at the Goodwood Festival & just failing to get up at Newbury on Saturday, David O'Meara's 5yo must be the bet here over a furlong more. He's shown he stays a mile in the past & is due to go up 5lb in the future. York & Newbury are similiar tracks & a reproduction of his run 5 days ago would be enough.

The Greenall/Guerriero 5yo could not have been more impressive at Southwell in June, winning by 13 lengths. That followed a fall 10 days previously on his chasing debut at Stratford. He was all the rage back at Stratford 8 days after his runaway win under a 7lb penalty but reportedly ran flat, with probably the races coming too soon. He's been freshened up with a 64-day break and looks the one in an open race.

Mags Mullins 4yo is without doubt the most unexposed mare here. A shock 66/1 winner at Ballinrobe in May in a conditions hurdle following a fall in a PTP, she was then exposed to the deep end of novice hurdling when 6th at the Galway Festival. This is her debut in a handicap on her 3rd run in a rules hurdle and crucially, in my opinion, her first run against her own sex. 4yos under 14/1 have a good record in this race from a small amount of runners.

A repeat of the win here 20 days ago by the Michael Flannery 8-year-old would see him go very close here from 4lb higher. The drop in trip of 1/2 furlong will probably help, as has the change of tactics employed since 7lb claimer Conor Owens has taken over. Instead of being held up, he's been ridden much more prominently, and with a lack of pace in the race, he may even get his own way in front at his local track.

Golden Mile at last week's Goodwood Festival and the Hunt Cup at the Royal Ascot meeting, and deserves a change of luck. He'll be ridden by the Swedish Champion jockey, Per-Anders Graberg, who will captain the Europe team.

The Ian Williams 5yo looks good each way value here. He's run well on 3 of his last 4 runs at this trip on quick ground, two of them over course and distance, with the only blip being at Epsom, which did not suit him at all. He'll be ridden by the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Robbie Dolan, who, although Australian-based, is a native of Ireland, so rides for the GB/Ireland team.

Given Willie Mullins' record in this, 5 out of the last 10 runnings, and the fact Paul Townend has chosen the 6yo mare from a possible 6 runners for the stable, this is too big a price. She's only had 3 runs for the yard, so is unexposed, and this drop back to a stiff 2 miles should suit her, following her good 4th in a competitive handicap at Punchestown's Festival over an extended 2m4f.

3-year-olds have won the last three runnings of the Oak Tree, and that's the age group I'm concentrating on. Andrew Balding's Formal was highly impressive at Epsom on Oaks day, but then proceeded to disappoint at York against the boys in the G3 Criterion. She was the only 3-year-old to contest that race, and I'm happy to put a line through that run.

Michael Bell's 5-year-old was beaten just over 1 length in this last year, and no doubt this has been his target again. You can ignore his run in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last time. Olly Murphy's 7yo is pretty consistent over both hurdles & fences & goes well for Lewis Edmunds , who is good value for his 7lb claim. My only worry is him getting in a battle for the lead, as there's one or two headstrong characters in the field. If he's sensible & lies up in second or third, he'll take the beating.

Out of the two joint-favourites, the Prix De Saint-Cloud winner is definitely the one I want to be with. On good ground and a track he likes, I'm confident he can turn that form around.
