Anyway

@12.00

This is very competitive, but Anyway still seems to be improving. He ran a cracker at the Cheltenham Festival behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Caldwell Potter and had a nice pipe opener recently when he comfortably beat the useful You Oughta Know. He has run well at the track before, gets this trip, and his prominent running style should keep him out of trouble. Derek O'Connor is in the saddle, which is also a positive.

I was all over Sing Us A Song for the King George Handicap at Ascot but he came out of the stalls very slowly and raced plum last for most of the way. He made up a lot of ground late on to eventually finish 9th not beaten that far. The price here is disappointing but I have got to give him one more chance as he previously looked very progressive.

Aiden O'Brien usually targets this race for some reason, usually with a once-raced, less-exposed type. Here he relies on Constitution River, who ran really well in his only race at Newmarket behind a useful-looking Godolphin horse, and he should be good enough to win this.

This looks quite competitive for a mid summer bumper with a few looking interesting on pedigree, but Grizzled Squirrel really caught the eye on debut when seeming to run very green in patches but staying on well to finish a close up 5th behind his useful stablemate, with the second going on to comfortably beat the favourite for this race next time out. He is by Jack Hobbs and out of a Kayf Tara mare so is bred for the job and could be open to plenty of improvement. The Moores have a very good strike rate in bumpers.

Jentobello has looked very good in winning his two bumpers, finishing very strongly both times. It is interesting that he beat a horse owned by the Rooneys first time out, and they then bought this horse to race in their colors. If he jumps well on his first hurdles run, he will take a fair bit of beating.

This is not the greatest-looking bumper by a long way, and it could be worth siding with rules newcomer Kilcandra Jvc for in-form trainer Evan Williams. His Irish point form doesn't look inspiring at first glance, as he didn't complete due to sloppy jumping in each of his three races. However, on closer inspection, he showed a fair bit of ability in competitive-looking races, and he is related to many good winners, including the very useful J.P. McManus-owned Drop The Anchor. His trainer does very well in bumpers, and his horses can be well supported. He could go very well at an inflated price.

I'm prepared to give You Oughta Know one more chance after tipping him last time. He finished second to a horse who had previously finished second behind the subsequent Grade 1 winner Caldwell Potter at the Cheltenham Festival, so it was a good effort. His bumper form was way ahead of anything else in this field, and with Paul Townend now on board, he can hopefully transfer that ability to his chasing career.

The horses that have run before don't look to be anything special, so this race could go to one of the well-bred newcomers. Gameball and Largy Meadow both fit the bill, and preference is for Gameball. He is by the high-quality National Hunt sire Yeats and out of a Flemensfirth mare who produced the high-class Maries Rock amongst others. His trainer, Andrew Slattery, has a good bumper record and is having a particularly good time with his bumper runners recently.

Closutton is very nicely bred and could be useful for the Willie Mullins stable but backing a horse at odds on first time out when there are promising alternatives looks a risk and the comments in the Racing Post from the stable were that she was decent but not a world beater. Walks The Talk looks to have a decent chance to upset the odds. She bolted up in a point to point at Dromahane and ran a nice first race under rules behind a very good horse. She may have needed that a bit as it was her first run since October and John McConnell has a very good record in bumpers, so she looks to have a good each way chance. She is also very nicely bred and open to plenty of improvement.

In an open looking bumper it could be worth taking a chance on Miss Guiry at the price. She is having her first run but she is very nicely bred. Hotazhell seems a crazy price for this, albeit very competitive looking Group 1 Eclipse. His form matches up with anything else in the race and he should come on for his 4 length third behind Field of Gold in the Irish 2000 Guineas first time out. The ground may be a concern, but he is by Too Darn Hot who's progeny seem to act very well on good to firm ground. His rating of 117, with the weight he gets from the 4 year olds, means he is rated only 1lb behind the odds on favourite Ombudsman, who may have been flattered by his win at Royal Ascot.

Being by Carravaggio (who was an out and out speed horse on the flat) it is hard to imagine how he can get the 2 mile trip but he obviously does as his win at the Cheltenham Festival confirmed. A very good race for the track and Diamond Rain could continue her return to form. She was massively impressive when I was at Newbury last May and I thought she was going to be special, but her form tailed off after. She had a long break until returning at Haydock in May this year when she comfortably won a Listed race. This is her first run on an all weather surface but horses by Shamardal have a better record on it than on grass so that should not be an issue.
