Not a race where one can be tremendously confident. Gata Ban is a threat but yet to run over fences under rules. The best horse on the clock is Annie Nail, but she is 7lb out of the weights and comes off the pace and should find this all a bit quick. So I have landed on Fancy Stuff. She ran well after a 4-month break at Chepstow and on that occasion and many others has been in better races than this, and is kindly weighted today and reunited with Sean Bowen, who took another ride that day which was then a NR. Small stake.

A difficult race to evaluate with many spinning parts, and it has come down to a toss-up between this lad and Basilette. Basilette has fractionally the quickest time for 2m over hurdles that I can record, but is up 5lbs for that, and Sansom has never ridden a winner here. Keep It Cool has his first run for Owen but will be fit, having run 39 days ago, and his better runs have been on ground with some give in it in Ireland. You have to go back a year for his last recordable run over 2 miles, which is only fractionally slower than that of Basilette and recorded up the tough hill finish at Downpatrick. Chadwick has a good record here, and the above factors swing it for me, but not with burning confidence.

Robbie Dunne has a cracking record here from 2m4f onwards. If this horse reproduces the performance from his run earlier in the month at Huntingdon on the clock, then he has the upper hand by half a second on all known performances. I expect the Bowen horse to be better than LTO over a shorter trip and down 4lbs. Hopefully, Sean will take most of the market with him and push this lad out to a more backable price.

A tricky little contest, but in the end, I have come down on the most reliable of the four. Tomorrow is the Owen horse's first run over fences, and unless they are quicker than they were over hurdles around here, they won't be involved. I backed Bella Montrose when they won here last time out, but now up 9 lbs and with an inferior jockey, they are the slowest on the clock by a decent margin. The Crawley horse is a threat on the clock but has never gone well fresh before. Which leaves me with the selection who has consistently recorded the same time per furlong for their last three runs, even when cut adrift at Kempton last time out, and they were eased a little that day from two out. So assuming the money comes for Bowen, I am happy to go with this lad.

The favorite may well win, having strolled to a first win last time out around here. But the form from that is poor, and a novice defying the penalty should always be challenged. On the clock, there is plenty to consider here, and I also like Border Gem, who produced a good time over 2 miles at Hereford and is bred to stay this far. The selection has a bit more exposure to this trip, which has lured me in. On the clock, she produced a better time at Exeter over a similar trip than the favorite did here last time out and then did well enough at Fontwell. Hosie hasn't a good record at having them ready first time out, which is a concern, but given the price...

An indulgence really, but this grey mare has a better chance than the bare form suggests. On the clock, she has run within a tenth of a second of the principal's best recent times. For her, that time was on soft at Catterick, while they were at Wolverhampton and Windsor on the AW and Good. She is down 9 lbs from her last run with the decent claimer's allowance into play, and 50/1 is too big and has tempted me in.

The top two in the market will take the attention here and hopefully make this lad a bigger price by the off. He caught the eye at Warwick last time out when he fluffed the last when seemingly having the beating of Jackstell. Jackstell subsequently defied the penalty next time out at Hereford, beating a decent Twiston horse as the pair pulled 17 lengths off the rest. So given that form line, good evidence on the clock (only 3 of the field have recordable times over hurdles), and the advantage of fitness that he will have, I am happy to go with this lad.

An open affair which could go in various directions, but this horse ran well here over 7f and ran his fastest 3 furlongs at the end, staying on well, while many of the field tonight naturally slowed at the end of their last runs. Last time out, he failed to figure at Southwell over 5f, but despite being eased late on, he ran quicker than the rest of this field have in recent months on an artificial surface. I am probably tilting at windmills here, but on the clock, this horse is the best rival to the current favorite and by some way. This is the selection's first run over 6 furlongs, but in his sole start on the AW (over 5f here), he ran the final furlong faster than the rest of the field despite hanging in the straight. That run suggested that he would stay, and along with the favorite, he is drawn to overhaul the pace setters who will come from wide draws. He will be a handful for Billy, and there are risks attached, but he can give the favorite the most to think about.

Interesting race with a number of these re-opposing from 3 weeks ago here. The selection ran a strange race on chasing debut, looking uncomfortable or disinterested until turning in when Sam suddenly started to get a tune from him, and he ran on positively to finish a never nearer 3rd. He faces the winner from that race again tomorrow, 8lbs better off than last time out, and it would be disappointing if he didn't compete more and end up closer.

Ran well last time out on his debut for Robbie Llewellyn over an inadequate trip. Now that he has moved out to a kinder price, he is of tenuous interest here. They are aiming to keep the ground on the easy side of good, which is important for him. Whilst he has drawn a blank when going right-handed at Carlisle, the runs that way round have been decent. He is up in class, and this would be a career best, so we have to be realistic. But I trust Charlie Poste more than most claimers, and with only 2 places available, I will have a small play to win.

A winner here as a novice hurdler, which at least shows that he takes to the undulations and stiff finish. He has run well enough in his first 3 chases this summer and last time out at Warwick shaped as though he needed this longer trip. The inexperience of the jockey is a concern, but he is taking 6 lbs off in addition to the fact that this lad is better treated against My Gift To You when they met this summer. He ran well on stable debut for the Skeltons at Worcester last month when he seemed to find 2 and a half a bit short for him. As he was held up, he was caught out along with the rest of them when the leader kicked turning in, and they couldn't get him back. As far as I can tell looking back, he will appreciate the step up to 3 miles and cope with Chepstow well enough, and a better jockey gets on board. 8s is a good price in my view.

Ran in this last year off 6 lbs higher and in a slightly stronger edition than tomorrow's. He has had no real form since then other than staging something of a revival in his last two races, and he has a huge upgrade in rider tomorrow. I think that he will appreciate the better ground afforded to him tomorrow than that of last year. With 6 places being paid in some places, he is worth a spin if you can on above 5s and thus an EW bet.

A tentative play here as the horse won as he should have on seasonal return at Newton Abbot, with the runner-up subsequently winning there too, and has the edge in fitness on most of these. But he was too keen at Aintree in April over 2 miles and faded late on. Whilst he has a better jockey on top tomorrow than he had that day, it is a concern as this race is hard to win off the front. There is enough here to get interested at this price. His two wins have come over this distance, and after opening his season well enough over this trip at Ayr in April, he has been dropped to 6f since. The mark has dropped through the season, and he is now 5lbs under his last winning mark before taking Jake's 7lb off. I think there are worse claimers out there and he won his only ride here, so can't get better than that! Needs to break well and go forward from that draw and hope he stays. His last run at Hamilton looked like a horse who had had enough this year, so that is the risk built into the price.
