Queen Of Thieves has her sights lowered having raced the last three times in Listed company. She broke her maiden by 11 lengths 81 days ago over 11 furlongs at Yarmouth and showed potential. She is now rated 85 and is entered in a handicap for the first time. It's too soon to write her off and the daughter of Frankel can be competitive in this grade.

Alfie Gee gets a good tune out of this low-rated operator and has ridden well the last two times at Brighton, which is quite a tricky track. Those were in classified races carrying 9-2. The Ian Williams-trained Aalto won this race last year off a mark of 88, and he runs off just three pounds higher this time around. He ran a lacklustre race on seasonal reappearance over a mile and is likely to come on for that effort. The yard has hit form, as advertised by Oneforthegutter's easy win yesterday in the big handicap here.

Miss Nightfall has been so hyped up after Royal Ascot that there is little juice in the price. I would say she should be about 2/1 in this company. As an alternative, Bountiful is given a chance. She was third in a Listed race at Lingfield, but then given a break of 107 days before reappearing at Ascot and not really staying a mile. She has won over a stiff six, and the extended sprint distance looks like her forte. With a 22-day racing interval, the unexposed filly should be ready to roll today.

Four-year-old Palazzo Persico looks capable of defying a 5-pound penalty but is perhaps best on a sharper track and the all-weather. One that jumps off the page is Mcted. He won over the course and distance last August off a handicap mark of 57. He is rated 56 today. Jockey Alice Bond informed the Stewards she was denied a clear run at Pontefract last time, so that race is best written off. With luck in running and on going that suits, Mcted has a good chance today of gaining compensation. 12/1 is an attractive price.

Match Play might get away with the five pounds penalty (highest winning mark in 2024 was 68). Candy Warhol is respected, but his best races have been on the all-weather. So, A Girl Named Ivy is the selection. She was beaten by the shortest of margins last time at over 5 furlongs at Wetherby and is clearly in top-top fitness. She races off a mark of 65, but the fact she has won here off 70 gives one plenty of confidence today.

Just King High messed up the start last time at Redcar. Prior to that, he was badly drawn at York. In May, he was making his seasonal return and was cold in the market. Today, he has the plum draw one and has dropped in the weights from a mark of 82 down to 76. Morgan Cole takes another 5 pounds off his back. He has won on the artificial surface over this distance, and today looks like his day. Certainly not a 14/1 chance.

Walsingham, who has not raced for 242 days, is from a yard that has had only 6 winners from 90 in the last three weeks and is around 9/4, suggesting he is poor value. Uppercase is making his handicap debut off a low mark of 72. He ran creditably into fourth on his three-year-old comeback run (form holding up well). He showed enough when staying on into third at Wolverhampton last September to suggest this stiff mile will suit. It's his first try on turf, but the booking of Tom Marquand suggests connections are positive in that regard. 16/1 looks very generous.

Royal Dress's profile in pattern races is not enough to justify 9/4, and some of the others in the line-up are at the level of very good handicappers. How Impressive is racing back in class 5 company for the first time since winning last October off a mark of effectively 80, including a penalty. Ivan Furtado sends just the one horse up to Beverley this afternoon. The Nottinghamshire-based trainer could have gone to Nottingham with Alfa Sea Breeze this afternoon, who was well beaten last time out. But he actually ran a better race than the bare result suggests. He tried to make all over 7 furlongs against Remmooz (4th in Jersey Stakes), fading out of contention 2 furlongs from the line. He has now qualified for handicaps and gets an opening mark of just 60. Dropped in both distance and class, one suspects he will have a much better chance today and provide local owners, Alfa Site Services, with a successful day.

Victory Queen's form was not boosted by Gulya's setback at York, and that removes the collateral form line to Bermuda Longtail. The stiff 8 furlongs poses no problems, and the unbeaten filly appeals as an attractive each-way option.

Deep Water Bay is taking a big step up in class, but in consequence carries just 8-2. He looked to have any amount in hand when winning over 1 mile 5 furlongs at Chelmsford on Tuesday, and the three-year-old is yet to be reassessed by the handicapper and is quickly turned out again. He is a home-bred with a nice pedigree (Galileo damsire), and one is inclined to think connections have been judicious in their placing of this one. Valiancy had to go all the way to Hamilton for the 410k gelding to break his duck in a weak maiden.

A high-quality, small-field handicap with very little between the geldings in terms of official ratings. Montpellier is clear on my ratings, but there are some doubts over the distance dropping back to 6 furlongs. He clearly excels at the intermediate 7 furlongs. On the other hand, Big Cyril is reverting to six furlongs, having failed at 7 on his seasonal reappearance in Listed company. He ran a fair third in another Listed race last July and is in the top ten at Alice Haynes' stable. He has won on fast ground and would appear to have a better chance than 10/1 suggests.

Trooper Bisdee ran in the Cesarewitch in October but was probably unsuited by the soft ground. Sir Mark Prescott gave him a nice seasonal reappearance in May. Uneasy in the market in early trading, he was a bit rusty and slow to break but put in a good comeback race. With doubts about some of the others in terms of trip and racing interval, he looks to have lots in his favour not least his staying ability. By Australia, he excelled in the Pontefract Cup over 2 miles 2 furlongs on fast ground. This is tougher than that race, but the 5 year-old looks to have been readied by the Baronet on behalf of the owner-breeder Kelsey-Fry KC.

The Chester Cup looks like a very solid race - indeed runner-up, Caballo De Mar has already gone in off a mark of 93 next time out. Leinster and Zoffee therefore, both make the shortlist receiving a swing in the weights from East India Dock who has gone up in the handicap 8 pounds. Marginal preference is for Zoffee who was keen on his comeback run in the hands of the apprentice rider. He looks likely to be better for the race and hopefully on this more conventional track, Oisin Murpy can get him into a nice rythym.
