Sky Safari

Daily Racing

50 WIN

@5.00

Win

200

Lightly-raced Sky Safari had been the model of consistency prior to the Royal Ascot meeting with three wins and a runner-up achievement, including a course and distance win. She couldn't live with the pace in the class 2 handicap at Ascot in a field of 23 and was eased down by her jockey. With a drop in grade and an unchanged handicap mark, she has a good opportunity to bounce back this evening.

Lancashire was well supported on debut last year and filled the runner-up spot despite a slow start in a novice race comprising some nicely bred three-year-olds. He was weak in the market for his comeback at Sandown in a class 2 and ran well enough, but lacked fitness. He is dropped in grade today and Salisbury is less testing, so he should run better today.

Lose

-50

A high-quality, small-field handicap with very little between the geldings in terms of official ratings. Montpellier is clear on my ratings, but there are some doubts over the distance dropping back to 6 furlongs. He clearly excels at the intermediate 7 furlongs. On the other hand, Big Cyril is reverting to six furlongs, having failed at 7 on his seasonal reappearance in Listed company. He ran a fair third in another Listed race last July and is in the top ten at Alice Haynes' stable. He has won on fast ground and would appear to have a better chance than 10/1 suggests.

The Blind Beggar didn't handle Epsom last time, and he might be granted another chance in a lower grade. However, if the first-time blinkers revitalize Faustus, he could be a danger at a much bigger price. He won off a mark of 75 in a £30k class 3 at Newbury last August (5f, good to firm). Today, he races off 68 and is reunited with Joe Leavy, who rode to victory on that occasion.

Trooper Bisdee ran in the Cesarewitch in October but was probably unsuited by the soft ground. Sir Mark Prescott gave him a nice seasonal reappearance in May. Uneasy in the market in early trading, he was a bit rusty and slow to break but put in a good comeback race. With doubts about some of the others in terms of trip and racing interval, he looks to have lots in his favour not least his staying ability. By Australia, he excelled in the Pontefract Cup over 2 miles 2 furlongs on fast ground. This is tougher than that race, but the 5 year-old looks to have been readied by the Baronet on behalf of the owner-breeder Kelsey-Fry KC.

Saint Lawrence won this race in 2023 off a handicap mark of 100 when denied a clear run. He turns up today rated 97 with just 9-0 to carry. The low draw looks to be an advantage and he acts on on good to firm going. It's a shame Hollie Doyle isn't riding for the owner who bred Saint Lawrence, but Colin Keane is a safe pair of hands having ridden Field Of Gold to victory on Tuesday.

Inisherin's seasonal return in a Group 2 at York was exemplary. There was tons of confidence in the market following a breathing procedure for his comeback and he did not let supporters down. A Group 1 course and distance winner he is effective on fast ground. This is the trainer's stable star, and with a second on Tuesday and another yesterday hopefully, this will be Kevin Ryan's Royal meeting winner.

Flight Leader ran a reasonable race in a class 2 at Chester on a track that did not appear to suit. That was his seasonal return and he won a couple of races for Andre Fabre in France before changing hands for 100k. Should be better than he showed at Chester on comeback and has at least shown he acts on quick ground. Up in trip.

Bookmakers love to lay a filly especially one carrying 5 pounds extra. So on that basis, William Knight's gelding Atlantic Gamble is selected as an each-way play. He is on winning mark and has won four times on the artificial surface. The application of first time cheekpieces should keep his mind on the job.

Wadacre Gomez is on a wining mark and can be forgiven a couple of poor runs especially at Chester when unsuited by the track and ground. He returns to the all-weather and is something of a course specialist at Chelmsford having clocked up five wins over track and trip. At 16/1 his odds under-estimate his chance. Jolly Jack Tar is a danger but has been off the track for 196 days.

I suspect the drift on Illinois is because there is a question mark over the trip. The Galileo colt had no problem in the St Leger when only beaten a neck by JanBrueghal and Aidan O'Brien would not be running over this distance if the team were not confident. So long as Ryan Moore can keep tabs on likely front runner Trawlerman.

Mythical Bird and Empress Of All both went off at similar prices at Goodwood last time in a race where there seemed to be an uneven early pace. Possibly Mythical Bird was also not at home on the track. Either way, she is given another chance and 6/1 seems to offer some value in the re-match. She has made the frame 3 from 3 on the all-weather.

A trio of class droppers in this race with Ziggy's Missile and Fidelius appealing most. The latter is reverting to the artificial surface having won here with something in hand in March. Last month he was beaten less than a length off 83 suggesting today's handicap rating of 81 is workable. Charles Bishop is on the crest of a wave at the moment having ridden won a Listed race yesterday at Royal Ascot.

Charles Darwin has an obvious chance. Whether he should be so short in price amongst a field of unexposed juveniles is another matter. A chance is taken on Hey Tru Blue as an each way option. A 175k Breeze Up purchase, the Blue Point colt made a very pleasing racecourse debut at Leicester when finishing second. The winner ran okay in the Coventry stakes Group 2 on Tuesday and the third and fourth home have both franked the form by winning well in better company.

Liberty Lane took the progression from top class handicaps into pattern company well making the frame when runner-up to Lead Artist in Group 3 class and third in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes. He comes here in winning form having bagged a Listed race en-route at Goodwood 25 days ago. He has a small weight penalty, but for a reason. Galen must also be respected having beaten Jan Breughal on his penultimate start in a Group 3 over in Ireland.

The Chester Cup looks like a very solid race - indeed runner-up, Caballo De Mar has already gone in off a mark of 93 next time out. Leinster and Zoffee therefore, both make the shortlist receiving a swing in the weights from East India Dock who has gone up in the handicap 8 pounds. Marginal preference is for Zoffee who was keen on his comeback run in the hands of the apprentice rider. He looks likely to be better for the race and hopefully on this more conventional track, Oisin Murpy can get him into a nice rythym. Leinster has nice staying pedigree and is only a four year old with potential.

Possibly the French Guineas form has been slightly under-valued; a solid 9/4 market leader in large field with a Group 3 and Group 1 winner making the frame he took the step up to a mile well. Connections had talked about Royal Ascot last year, but Aidan O'Brien has let him develop and he is now the finished article and, not surprisingly, Ryan Moore's mount.

Given the proximity of Carl Spackler to Notable Speech in the $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar, the price difference today looks too big. On that occasion he was 7/2 and Notable was 13/8. For that reason alone, Carl Spackler warrants an each way interest at 16/1.

Berry Edge landed a bit of a big price touch over track and trip last June. That was on good to soft ground racing off a handicap mark of 61 (runs off 62 today). If his last few runs can be ignored when trying hurdling, he is potentially well in at the scene of his last C&D win.

Lightly-raced Mile By Mile ran quite a pleasing comeback race over 6f at this track last month on good to soft ground. The step up in trip should suit and she runs off a weight of just 8-6 after accounting for the jockey's claim. She might be under-rated by the official assessor. Suzette gets a swing in the weights from Dream Illusion and goes well at this track.

But so too does Vaunted who has dropped down in the handicap and her jockey can claim another 7 pounds apprentice allowance, so theoretically runs off 54. Her last win in October was off a rating of 58 so she is weighted to go well if there is a fair pace to aim at.

Surprised made a very pleasing return to action at Catterick last month, only beaten 1.25L having been sent off 5/4 favourite. She looks likely to come on for that run. She has only had the three runs and won a fillies' novice stakes last September at Beverley over 7 furlongs while still showing signs of inexperience. A daughter of Ulysses, she looks likely to benefit from the step up in distance today on handicap debut.

Italica is very tempting, but the two year old has 9-11 to shoulder including a winner's penalty of seven pounds. A chance is taken on Dark Mandate, a 100k Dark Angel colt who looks a horse with plenty of potential. Quietly supported on racecourse debut at Windsor, he did nothing wrong and had nice introduction. Charlie Hills only has a couple of runners and this looks like the best of them. Hollie Doyle takes the ride.

Desert Beauty has not been able to show her best so far. The ground was too soft and the trip too short at Leicester. Prior to that at Bath, she showed a bit of promise over a mile on ground that was too fast but had no realistic chance anyway behind 2/9 favourite Zappata. Her first three races were all in class 5s where a handicap mark was probably the objective. Today, over a mile on good ground, she should not have any excuses to take a step forward.
