Connie's Rose and Savanagh Smiles both go well at this undulating track. But so too does Vaunted who has dropped down in the handicap and her jockey can claim another 7 pounds apprentice allowance, so theoretically runs off 54. Her last win in October was off a rating of 58 so she is weighted to go well if there is a fair pace to aim at.

Cargin Bhui was a short head second over the course and distance in a class 4 last June when rated 79. His mark has slipped to 74 and he is potentially well treated with conditions to suit - acts on good to soft. As when runner up last year, Joe Fanning takes the ride, which suggests a good run is imminent.

Surprised made a very pleasing return to action at Catterick last month, only beaten 1.25L having been sent off 5/4 favourite. She looks likely to come on for that run. She has only had the three runs and won a fillies' novice stakes last September at Beverley over 7 furlongs while still showing signs of inexperience. A daughter of Ulysses, she looks likely to benefit from the step up in distance today on handicap debut.

Italica is very tempting, but the two year old has 9-11 to shoulder including a winner's penalty of seven pounds. A chance is taken on Dark Mandate, a 100k Dark Angel colt who looks a horse with plenty of potential. Quietly supported on racecourse debut at Windsor, he did nothing wrong and had nice introduction. Charlie Hills only has a couple of runners and this looks like the best of them. Hollie Doyle takes the ride.

Egoli unseated Rossa Ryan before the start and broke loose at Leicester on debut last time. However, he ran a pretty good race rallying late on but not quite having enough to sustain the effort on the rising finish. He is bred by the owners and they will have been encouraged by his track performance if not pre-race antics. He is worth another chance today.

Brize Norton made a most encouraging reappearance at Kempton winning his maiden in a novice stakes without being extended. Al Qareem's best form was at Ascot last year when beating the Al Aasy in the Cumberland Lodge Group 3. He was far from disgraced behind Illinois at Chester and had Absurde (in receipt of three pounds) half a length behind. He is probably best on more galloping, straight tracks and looks to offer a bit of value in a race where they are quite closely matched.

Chillingham has been knocking on the door in Class 2 company, but not quite quick enough to win races at that level. This is his first run in a Class 3 since April 2023 when winning at Thirsk over a mile and a half. His handicap mark has also come down a fair way since the high 90s to 92 and he should be competitive today.

Desert Beauty has not been able to show her best so far. The ground was too soft and the trip too short at Leicester. Prior to that at Bath, she showed a bit of promise over a mile on ground that was too fast but had no realistic chance anyway behind 2/9 favourite Zappata. Her first three races were all in class 5s where a handicap mark was probably the objective. Today, over a mile on good ground, she should not have any excuses to take a step forward. She gets a three-year-old weight for age allowance.

Azahara Palace is best judged on her reappearance run than last time in a class 3 at Newbury. That race was slightly above her normal class of race and she wasn't helped by having to take a check about 2 furlongs from the finish. She was a very close third at Haydock the tme before off today's handicap mark. That form has worked out well enough. Azahara Palace is bred by Lord Margadale which provides an interesting link to the race. The booking of Tom Marquand is a big plus.

If Tea Sea can translate his all-weather winning ability to Brighton, he is potentially well handicapped on turf. He ran up a hat-trick in January off marks up to 65. An expensive 130k yearling, Dazzling Haze was very well supported for her career debut when finishing third over 5f at Thirsk in a class 4 maiden. She did nothing wrong that day, and the runner-up has since franked the form. This represents a slight shift down in grade, and she receives a handy five pounds from the boys. Tony Carroll's Pop Dancer is in really fine form at the moment and had Rebel Star well held last time over the course and distance last month. The swing in the weights doesn't look enough to reverse the form today given the manner of his win. Pop Dancer placed off a mark of 70 last year. Big Time Rascal could be back on a 'form wave' after last time's long-priced win off a lowly mark.

Whilst Nariko has won after a lay-off, at even money, the market could be overestimating her chance. Dapper Valley last won over 7 furlongs at Yarmouth on soft ground despite a rough passage. That was three runs ago, and he races today in the same class off a one-pound lower mark, so should be capable of being in the shake-up with conditions to suit. (He was third of 12 here as a two-year-old.) He looks a solid each-way option.

The only one who has had a race in the last month is Bolster, who made his reappearance in a Group 2 on unsuitably fast ground at Chester. He took the graduation from handicaps up to Listed company with some aplomb in November. The four-year-old was a solid 7/4 favourite at Newmarket over ten furlongs on soft ground and battled on well to prevail. That form is holding up quite well, and Sons And Lovers was mixing it with Jan Breughel next time at the Curragh. If Hamish was 100% race-fit, he would be odds-on.

Spirit Mixer (11/4) and the French-bred filly, Morning Air (10/1), reoppose after taking part in the Chester Cup over two miles last time. For what it's worth, they were not that far apart and race off similar weight differentials again. However, Spirit Mixer had already benefited from a pipe-opener, whereas Morning Air turned up with no prep run. She should be fitter for it, and if reproducing the effort put in on her UK winning debut at Leicester, she is entitled to run better than her odds suggest, especially with 2 miles on good to soft being up her street.

Anna Swan showed plenty when winning at Newbury as a two-year-old on soft ground over 7 furlongs. She was pitched into the Fillies' Mile Group 1, which was over-ambitious in October. Then her comeback run last month was underwhelming in the Pretty Polly, but she was probably lacking race fitness on ground which was too quick. With her preferred conditions today, a better run today should be forthcoming.

With the going changed to heavy, the complexion of this race changes. Fine Interview is my top-rated but has been beaten twice off his current handicap mark of 91, admittedly in deeper races than this the last twice. He seems more at home on flat galloping tracks. The advantage today may go to Wodao, if fit enough first time out. He is a Goodwood and soft ground specialist. He has yet to win here but went very close last October over course and distance on heavy ground in a class 3. That was off a mark of 92, and today he runs off 91. He seems quite positive in the market, suggesting he is ready to roll.

Lambourn is bred for this trip and won the Chester Vase over a mile and a half despite not being 100% race fit, doing his best work at the finish to stay on well. He had a proper blow after the race. That proved he can handle a sharp track and also has the necessary stamina. A bit of ease in the ground is not going to be a problem. This is a step up in grade, but he has scope for improvement from last time. The Lion In Winter ran a shocker last time and is certain to be a different proposition today. It would be no surprise to see Aidan O'Brien's horses filling all of the podium places.

Royal Dress and Chic Colombine reoppose after last year's unfortunate coming together, which could have given a different outcome. Chic Colombine has arguably had excuses since that day and has recently undergone a breathing procedure. Last time at Goodwood was a write-off, having stumbled out of the stalls. The trainer fits cheekpieces today, and if that sharpens her up out of the gates, she should run better than her odds suggest.

Something of a process of elimination race. With seven-year-old Rhoscolyn looking worth taking on despite winning this last year, this looks like a good opportunity for the four-year-old filly, Miss Information. She won this grade of handicap last time at Newmarket over 7 furlongs and the form has held up. Bred and owned by John Guest Racing, he did not show a great deal on debut over 6 furlongs at Leicester behind 2/5 favorite Archivist. He looks the type to improve for the run and steps up to 7 furlongs today. His dam, who was trained by Mick Channon, stayed a mile, so that might eke out some improvement as he drops down a grade.
