Roach Power has been doing really well since switching to Michael Wigham at Newmarket and has been able to win twice off a reduced handicap mark. He has gone up in the weights for an easy win over course and distance last month, but he remains of interest having won off higher handicap marks (70 and 75) a couple of years ago. The course clearly suits and he is in very good form presently.

With a field of eight and a short-priced favourite, Spendmore Lane appeals for each-way purposes. She was heavily backed on seasonal return at Nottingham and didn't get home over six furlongs. Dropped down to 5 furlongs today and likely a good bit sharper, she makes her handicap debut off a mark of just 67 and is preferred to the exposed Irish raider Mary Shoelaces.

Big Leader could be something special as he bids for a three-timer, but his last race looks a bit weak and arguably he has been well placed so far. Hi Royal's last two races can be passed over - he missed the break last time when stumbling at the start. He is much better judged on his close second in the class 2 Thirsk Hunt Cup off a handicap mark of 102. He races off 101 today and a reproduction of that effort should see him go close back at this track.

It's difficult to oppose the Tony Carroll-trained Son Of Astar, but I'm not sure he had a lot in hand, and he has gone up a few pounds in the weights for his course and distance win on 9th July. So Smart is marginally preferred, having had a poor draw at Lingfield last time in better company. He is on a winning mark and takes a drop back into class 6 company.

This looks like a clever bit of placing by Sunny Orange's connections. He won over track and trip off a handicap mark of 54 on 4th July. He went up in the weights to a rating of 57, but apprentice jockey Jake Dickinson can claim a useful seven pounds, so he is effectively below his last winning mark. Tim Easterby entrusted the jockey to ride Poet's Dawn in a £15,000 Ripon handicap the other day where he finished third, so the team clearly have some faith in his piloting ability to land this.

Two that stand out are Half Sovereign (a good winner at Ayr) and Pearl River. The two-year-old colt ran in a really good class 2 at Haydock last time, which has produced four winners and a couple of seconds next time out. Although Pearl River finished only 6th, the two behind both him subsequently won well, including in better company. 11/2 looks very generous.
