Although Alabama Belle finished 7th last time at Wolverhampton over 6 furlongs, that was a tight finish and she was only beaten a 1 1/3 lengths. The handicapper has eased her mark another couple of pounds and Daniel Muscutt has been booked to ride.

Corsican Caper is on an attractive mark and gets a useful 7 pounds from apprentice jockey Mason Paetel. He was beaten less than a couple of lengths in a 22k, 18-runner handicap last time out at Doncaster. He had Laser Focus, who re-opposes, a few lengths behind and the weight difference is unchanged. The return to 14 furlongs will be beneficial.

A 3-year-old fillies' handicap that has the potential to throw up an unpredictable result. A chance is taken on Tim Easterby's Tootsie off bottom weight. She has not shown much over six and seven furlongs on bottomless ground, but on pedigree is likely to appreciate the step up to a mile. Fitness must be taken on trust, but the yard has had ten winners in the last three weeks and David Allen has ridden a fair few of them.

Three of these making their reappearance, of which Jane Temple has come in for support. But she was put in the December mares' sale, and that has to count as a bit of a negative given the connections. Mexicali Rose is Joseph O'Brien's only runner in the UK today, and that would suggest this filly is in good shape. She has already had a preparation race, and this looks like a targeted prize. The step up to 10 furlongs shouldn't be a problem.

On her seasonal reappearance, Lady Ridgewood split a Dubawi filly and a Frankel filly from the Balding and Gosden yards at Newbury. Gosden's Queen of Thieves won next time out by 11 lengths. That might suggest that Lady Ridgewood should be rated a lot higher than 79 for her handicap debut. She can front run, so the track and small field may not be an issue.

Bellarchi's race was over before it started last time at Southwell. She became upset in the stalls and failed to meet expectations. Her supporters believed she would beat Bint Al Daar that day. Given the price differential as they reoppose today, another chance is taken on Bellarchi - especially as the Gaiety Musical form line is holding up well. On her 2024 turf form, she remains well handicapped.

Buxted Too was too keen in a valuable 50k, large field apprentice handicap last time at Lingfield. He is reunited with Richard Kingscote today, and a better run is expected. The extra distance should be within his stamina range, as he has hurdles form over two miles on good to firm ground. It would be no surprise if Ian Williams' other entry also runs well.

Shaw Park and Enpassant come out top on my ratings, so the selection is Enpassant at the longer price. He is making the switch back to turf from the artificial surface where he has been busy all winter. Around this time last year, he was 4th over the course and distance, so one cannot say he does not handle it. That was off a handicap mark of 73, with a rating now of just 62, he looks well treated if responding to the first-time visor.

McCauleys Tavern

McCauleys Tavern was the subject of a gamble at the track last October when rated 63. Unfortunately that went awry with an awkward start. Nevertheless, he was not beaten all that far into fourth place. He has now slipped further down the weights to a mark of 56 and with the jockey's claim he carries just 9-0. The trainer owns the horse, so market support would boost confidence.

Most of the horses in Ivan Furtado's yard are rated mid 60s. He only has a handful with official ratings north of 70 and this ex-Roger Varian horse is one of them. He won a 35k handicap at Windsor last August off a mark of 81 with a bit in hand. Since moving yards, he has worn a tongue strap and has had a respiratory operation. He should be strip fitter for the come-back run at stiff Pontefract last time. Tonight Billy Loughnane has been booked and a good run is hinted at.

Senseofentitlement was lightly raced last year after leaving David O'Mara, and there are reasons for performances that apparently offered little encouragement. But as a consequence, he has dropped to a mark of 51, six pounds less than his last win over the course and distance. The jockey is the part-owner, and he might well run better than expected back at this track.

King Cabo was quite well supported on seasonal return last time at Kempton, but caught a handicap blot and had no chance. He has been consistently running in better races than this since winning last August off today's mark and gets on well with his 7-pound claiming pilot. They are fitting a tongue strap to King Cabo today, and that might well bring out an extra few pounds of performance if effective. Draw 1 is a bonus.

Just Ten High is quickly turned out before the official handicapper can reassess his runner-up effort last time. He is thrice a beaten favourite off a mark of 62, and 5/4 makes limited appeal. Libra Tiger has, on the other hand, been quietly sliding down the weights and has responded well to cheekpieces in his last two races, including on seasonal return last time. He is taken to give the jolly a run for his money.

The Count Palatine - Connor Beasley combo has proved very effective, and he rides again today. When Count Palatine won last September, he carried 10-3 and defied a 6-pound penalty. The trainer, who is joint-owner, has then run the four-year-old in a couple of class 4s, and that may have proved too competitive, especially latterly on seasonal return. He remains fairly treated and is dropped into a class 5 today and will find the track ideal.

Just four horses running with recent race form, albeit Chiefman won fresh once. Samra Star ran her comeback race for a new yard in a competitive 25k, class 3 handicap on soft ground at Musselburgh, and that probably found her out. She is on a realistic mark now and might find this class 4 race a little easier.

While the two market principals are respected on form, they lack a recent race. Whereas, Rockit Tommy ran as well as could have been expected on seasonal return at Newbury over a slightly inadequate 10 furlongs. He had a very good season last year, winning twice in this grade over a mile and a half on the all-weather and should be sharper today. Appier rates a danger after dropping in the weights.

Diamondonthehill has a solid profile, but as a 7 year-old does not look particularly well handicapped. Rey De La Batalla, the four-year-old, bred and owned by Mr Moss, appears to be on the upgrade and has won over the course and distance twice including at this level. He was beaten by Diamondonthehill last time but was not well positioned out wide in the race. He is drawn low today and the weights remain unchanged, so could reverse the form. Signcastle City is interesting, if fit first time up.

It's interesting that Paul Mulrennan takes over from apprentice Ami Waugh on Dwindling Funds, given the last-named is at the meeting. This horse ran green on debut and as an April foal is obviously a late developer. She may run better today for that experience and sneak into a place.

Emilie Katrine Hasselbalch-Holm can claim 7 pounds in this race, and on the basis of weight alone, that might make the difference for the chances of Doublethetrouble. He has been going close in class 5 handicaps off marks of 66. An ease in grade and the weight allowance could give the course and distance winner a squeak. Keep close tabs on Pat Phelan's Turing making a seasonal reappearance.

Ayr is quite a trek for this small yard, but I believe the syndicate which owns White Umbrella is from Aberdeen. Either way, Christopher Kellet's White Umbrella has gone close the last four times, being beaten less than two lengths on those occasions, suggesting he is on a fair mark at the moment.
