This guy has been upwardly progressive this year, blowing apart an allowance race at Saratoga two back before running a better than looks race in the Secretariat last time. Extra distance and an honest pace can see him improve this afternoon and he can go well at a decent price.

However, the pace was very slow that day, which forced AGNB to check behind in traffic several times. She was only beaten 2 1/2L at the wire, though, and still ran a decent speed figure. With a better setup today, this gal can run a winning race against these easier foes.

An extremely well-bred Godolphin homebred, MONTADOR passed the post in front last time, only to be DQ'd. The horse who was put up for the win in that race came straight back to win an allowance next out. MONTADOR now stretches out in trip for the first time with that comeback run behind him. He's bred to relish this extra distance and Stidham is 5-15 in routes at Kentucky Downs. This guy seems to be held in high regard, has already displayed enough talent to win this race and could take some beating.

Trainer Jimmy DiVito has always been high on this filly, and quite rightly so. She was awesome when scoring over today's C&D last year and has since run well in a couple of competitive stakes. She now drops into allowance company for the first time and gets to use lasix for the first time, as well as cutting back to 6 1/2F and she gets Gaffalione aboard. All these factors give her a strong chance of bouncing back to her best.

Look, Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty should really win this. However, he's never had to run down a 'speed' horse of Magnitude's quality, and with the potential of more to come from this under-exposed runner, it's worth taking a 'safety-first' EW shot on him at 9/2. This guy took a little while to find his feet, but when Ben Curtis then took over and started riding him aggressively, he began to thrive; using his speed was key. He overcame post 12 to romp by 9 3/4L in the Risen Star, earning a 108 Beyer which briefly vaulted him into KY Derby favoritism before he was almost instantly ruled out of the TC series with an ankle chip. He then returned off a 104-day layoff to record a similar performance in the Iowa Derby, winning by 9 1/4L with a 105 Beyer. Sure, he's never faced a rival of Sovereignty's class, but he's running figures right in line with the favorite's, and with the potential of more to come as he makes his second start off the bench, he looms as a major threat to the favorite at a more than fair price.

Although we only have seven runners here, we're (seemingly) getting three places, which makes Claret Beret extremely interesting. This daughter of Not This Time has found a new lease of life since joining Saffie Joseph Jr's barn, romping by a distance over 1M in a handicap at Gulfstream two back before running a game second to Vahava in the Chicago when she was pace compromised last time. With more pace signed on today, there's a chance that she can improve upon her 97 Beyer from that race, which will give her a winning chance, especially as 7F looks to be her ideal trip. What's more, Irad shows up on this girl, despite having won a G2 on Halina's Forte last time.

Madaket Road has only one win to his name. However, he's hit the board in seven of his eight career starts (placed 4th in the other) and could be sitting on a big run today. Having run 2nd in the Pat Day Mile two back, he cut back to 7F in the Woody Stephens last time and ran a gallant race from post two, pressing a fast pace that ultimately set up well for closers. He'll have to reverse form with Patch Adams today, but the inside gate hasn't done that 'bicycle' horse many favors, as he could drop too far back and be forced to work a trip. MR, on the other hand, has finally drawn a wide post, opening up different tactical possibilities for John Velasquez. With three places on offer, 8/1 looks more than fair on this runner who always shows up.

Thorpedo Anna could well blow this field apart; she's the reigning Horse of the Year after all. But legitimate questions can be asked about whether she's plateaued - her speed figures this year give her almost no edge over her rivals. With so much speed signed on, Leslie's Rose looks a better play. This Pletcher trainee has generally been very consistent, save for her two sloppy track tries when she obviously hated the track and didn't run a step. A G1 winner last year, Leslie's Rose has always hinted at being one of the best in this division, and she finally came close to realizing that potential when romping in the Shuvee over today's course and distance last time. She's trained well since that race. With a favorable setup forecast, a repeat of that 96 Beyer earning effort should see her go very close.

A very consistent horse going out for the red-hot Michael Trotter, this gelding dropped back into allowance company last time but was given a bad ride by Flavia Pratt, who tried to use his turn of foot late. This horse is a real grinder who needs to be wound up from a long way out. I suspect Pratt is now fully aware of how to ride this horse to be effective as he now takes the ride for the second time. Against this group, he can make amends.

Indy Bay has been upwardly mobile since joining Saffie Joseph Jr's barn, winning her first three starts for the trainer before a slow pace dented her chances in the Victory Ride Stakes last out. Still, she finished a good third in that race behind Echo Sound and Beauty Reigns, which is strong form. She now faces a softer group of rivals and has drawn the rail, which is a huge positive when it comes to the Charles Town bull ring. Provided an honest pace is set, she looks to be sitting on a big effort here, and if she can get back to her form of two or three back, she should be tough to beat.

In an open-looking race, Graham Motion's Distant Winter looks to be providing the best value. Formerly trained in South Africa, this 5YO mare came to the USA with high-level SA runners Isivunguvungu, Gimme Another, and Beach Bomb, all of whom have held their own in high-level stakes since arriving stateside. Distant Winter, however, wasn't seen until she ran in an allowance at Delaware 63 days ago. Her neck victory in that race, which contained lesser rivals than she faces today, leaves her with improvement to find. However, context matters: it was her first start in over 400 days and visually - the late kick she showed - indicated real class. With that run behind her, there's every reason to believe she can improve this evening which, considering her 77 Beyer is already one of the highest figures on offer in this race, surely makes her a huge, huge player.

In a wide open renewal of the Yaddo S., Awesome Czech looks to be providing the best value at 6/1. This stake winning Horacio De Paz trainee has seemingly taken a nice step forward this year, posting Beyers of 84, 80 and an 85 last time when winning an open allowance that has produced two next out winners. AC was beaten at odds of 5/2 by re-opposing runners Silver Skillet and Serling Silver two back; however, she was pace compromised in that slowly run affair and better than the bare result. She should now get an ideal trip under the red-hot Santana, stalking what predicts to be a hot pace from a likable draw in gate two and if on song, she's certainly good enough to win this.
