I can see Fritz being favourite but the only reason for him to be so short as a favourite is the head to head ; he leads 6-1. Its worth pointing out though that only 2 of those matches took place in the USA and the 2 players shared those. In terms of current form I'd argue Tiafoes is better ; he's beaten 5 top 20 players in the last month alone plus Rublev at the end of July. Fritz had an impressive win against a curiously flat looking Zverev in the QF , and his win over Ruud in the round of 16 must be tempered because Ruud didn't look 100% fit. Both players are in form and it should be a cracker but at these price Tiafoe has to be the value call.

Despite being the former world number 2 this will be only Badosa's 2nd Grand Slam QF (same for Navarro) ; Navarro was the WImbledon QF this summer where she lost to the eventual finalist Paolini. She accounted for Gauff for the 2nd time in Slams this Summer in the last round , Kostyuk the round before and also has notable wins over Keys and Shnaider in Slams this year. Badosa's highest ranked opponent in reaching this far is Townsend at 48 ; she's had some decent enough wins on the hardcourts this Summer , particularly in Cincinnati , but no one I'd say is as good as Navarro. I make Navarro favourite.

Drapers 64% on HC in the last year to Machac's 62% ; Machac beat Djokovic on the clay in Geneva earlier this year to show he can handle the big occasion and this is probably his biggest ; its his first last 16 match at a Slam. Its only Drapers 2nd though having reached this stage in the US Open last year , losing to Rublev. Drapers beaten nobody of note in reaching this stage (beating Alcaraz' conqueror who was always likely to struggle after that win) whereas Machac had a notable win over Korda in round 2 (straight sets). 8 matches on 3 different surfaces this summer hasn't helped Machacs rhythm but he seems to have settled with the HC bounce now and ought in my view to be no bigger than 5-4 for this.

Muchova won convincingly last time but with her opponent making 29 unforced errors/ 8 double faults in the 18 games she was helped ; her win rate against top 100 players since her return from injury is just 55% (6-11) and she's up against the WImbledon/French Open finalist , world number 5 Jasmine Paolini. Paolini is 66% on HC this season ; its a mystery how Muchova is favourite for this in my view ; yes she was a semi finalist here last year but she beat no one to get there ranked above 30. Paolini should be favourite and I expect her to win.

16:00 Andrey Rublev vs Grigor Dimitrov

Andrey Rublev

Win Match

50 WIN

@1.85

Lose

-50

Rublevs a little bit of value here ; he's had a mach sharpener against Rinderknech when he came from 2 sets down whereas Dimitrov hasn't lost a set , as I said in the Ruud Fritz tip thats a negative at this point for Dimitrov. This is Dimitrovs least favourite Slam , he's made the QF only once here whereas its Rublev favourite according to win % plus he's made the QF 4 times. As far as recent form Rublev has the edge too with Dimitrov 4-2 this hardcourt season and he's not faced a top 32 player in that run. Rublev is 11-3 over the same period with the 3 defeats to Sinner , Tiafoe (playing some of the best tennis of his career this HC season) and Popyrin in the Toronto final. I'd make Rublev 5-6/8-11 so 17-20 offers a small bit of value.

Casper Ruud

Win Match

100 WIN

@3.25

Lose

-100

Perhaps I'm missing something (I've looked hard I promise) but for me 9-4 Ruud looks the bet of the tournament. He's the 2022 finalist , has a 16-7 record at the US Open compared to Fritz's 12-10 and although Fritz hasn;t lost a set yet , who has he played? Carabelli , who hasnt won a hardcourt match this year , Berrettini whose least favourite surface by far is the hardcourts and Comesana ranked 108. Ruud meanwhile will definitely be match sharp after coming from 2 sets down to beat the teenage prodigy Shang last time easily in the end for the loss of only 4 games in the last 3 sets. Not only should he be a shorter price , he should be favourite against an opponent who may well be coming in cold. Its important at this point of the event to have had a competitive game or you won't be matchsharp and he's not had one. Max bet.

Win Match

50 WIN

@1.48

Win

24

Zheng beat Vekic easily on the way to winning Olympic gold and has a 73% win rate on hardcourts this year , Vekic is down at 48%. Zheng scored an eyecatching first round win here beating Anisimova who had beaten 4 top 20 ranked players on the way to the Toronto final earlier this month. Zheng reached the QF here last year only losing to Sabalenka ; Vekic made the quarters too but that was 5 years ago and coming into this years US Open she was 2-4 here since that QF back in 2019. I'd have made Zheng about 4-9 so 8-15 seems generous.

Jakub Mensik

Win Match

50 WIN

@2.60

Lose

-50

Neither of these 2 have particularly compelling claims but what drew me to the match was the hardcourt win rate of both ; Mensik's is 68% (13-6) Borges 47% (16-18). Mensik had a very impressive win against Olympic semi finalist Auger Aliassime in round 1 , and although Borges has the higher win rate lately , he's not beaten anyone of significance aside from Humbert in Canada. Borges' stats don't include winning a Challenger on hardcourts in March but again he beat no one ranked in the top 80 there. Mensik's an emerging and improving player (still not yet 19) and there could well be more to come from him in this match.

Kruegers had wins over Fernandez Vekic and , in the last round , the prodigy Andreeva this month alone on the hardcourts and is an emerging and improving young player. Playing in front of her home crown may well spur her on and her opponent , while in solid form , has not beaten anyone of particular significance this hardcourt season. I'd make Krueger about 5-4/11-8 so at 7-4 she's a must bet.

Muchova was ranked 10 going into this event last year and went even further making the semis but she was the recipient of a favourable draw having met no one ranked above 30 to get there ; she was then duly beaten comfortably by eventual winner Gauff. She's a player we were on against Osaka last time but this time we oppose on the grounds that she's still beaten no one ranked in the top 32 since her return from wrist surgery and Potapova has done so twice this year with wins over Paolini (a much improved player since) and Fernandez here in round 1. She also reached the semis in Cleveland immediately before the US Open dispatching 3 solid opponents with ease. Muchova is priced up as though she's at or near her best and I'm simply not convinced. I had Potapova at about 5-4 for this so 2-1 looks very generousI had Potapova at about 5-4 for this so 2-1 looks very generous

Thompsons had wins over Draper Humbert and Hurkacz (in the last round) this month on the hardcourts and has won 10 of 13 this hardcourt season , he's very much on the upgrade. Arnaldi might easily have lost to either Mac Donald or Fokina in the Canada Masters before reaching the semis where he was soundly beaten by Rublev. He then lost in round 1 in Cincinnati to Etcheverry who's better known for his clay court exploits. I'd make Thompson around 4-6/8-11 so 5-6 looks a bit of value.

Mertens has won 60% of her hardcourt matches this year (24-16) which is better than her opponent (10-7 , 58.8%) Keys should be favourite ; she's won an event on clay and made the last 16 at Wimbledon before an unfortunate injury prevented her possibly beating eventual finalist Paolini but she retired again on her first hardcourt match with Stearns and with injury question marks remaining Mertens has a good chance. Mertens should have beaten Kostyuk in Cincinnati and has an impressive 69% win rate in Slams (only just behind Keys 71%). She's also 68% at the US Open to Keys 70% ; I'd make it 60-40 in Keys favour so 2-1 looks appealing.

He's won 60% of the hardcourt sets he's played this year compared to his opponents 64% and is more than capable of an upset win. Ruud conceded before a ball was hit to Korda in Canada before being well beaten by Auger Aliassime in Cincinnati in his most recent matches before 2 fairly bloodless victories against lower level opponents in this tournament.

You don't need many reasons to tip/back a 17-1 shot in a 2 horse race so this will be brief. Clearly Fritz should win in straight but he's only 10-10/50% at the US Open (his lowest win % at all the Slams) perhaps not finding the added pressure to his liking. He's lost 3 times at the event to players with a similar ranking to Comesana. Comesana is at a ranking of 108 and although the evidence is limited it seems he enjoys the big occasion having beaten Rublev at Wimbledon and ko'd Humbert in the 2nd round here. Svitolina's won 12 of her last 17 matches since Wimbledon began (including wins over Jabeur at Wimbledon and Pegula at the French) and the lowest ranked player she lost to was ranked 35 (teenager Noskova , now ranked 25) ; it takes a very good player to beat her lately and I'm not sure Gauffs playing "very good". she's lost 5 of her last 13 matches which is not the form of a US Open Champ. The ranking of those to beat her were 5 , 17 , 21 , 24 , 33 which suggest if anything her form is regressing. She's won 2 easily at this event but both low ranked and she'll need a big improvement to beat the in form Svitolina. It could be that the return to this venue as defending champ signals an upturn in form but at the prices she has to be opposed against this level of opponent in her current form.

She's only won back to back matches once in the last 3 months or so and for me ought to be the slight underdog here.
