Cock And Bull had a decent Flat rating of 78, which, in my opinion, puts the grey in with a good chance here, as only three of the 18 runners look to have anything of interest. He should know more about it today on this, his fourth hurdles run, and I expect him to run well on this going.

Talk Of New York

Daily Racing

Today's point-system top-rated, by a wide margin, is Charlie Appleby's Talk Of New York. Talk Of New York caught my eye with an impressive 5.5L debut win over a mile at Kempton in October and wasn't disgraced when an odds-on favourite finished third in a Listed race at Meydan at the end of February, where he dwelt at the start and lost ground running wide entering the straight. He should have no problems on this galloping track and definitely looks the one to beat.

Purely a gut-feeling selection here with Mercurius Power. The 8-y-o certainly has had a busy career, with 61 runs providing 6 wins and 13 places. His Newcastle stats show 2 wins and 13 top-four finishes from 21 runs. Looks worth an each-way bet.

Ruth Carr's Newcastle stats read 42 wins (10%) and 108 places (26%) from 421. She hasn't been getting that many winners over the past few months, but her last 20 runners have provided 2 wins and seven places, which shows the yard is starting to go the right way. This looks a tight handicap, with only 3 points separating all those with Timeform ratings (there's a ? against William Dewhurst), and Cajetan is just 2 points behind the top-rated Evening Saigon and, although disappointing since his stable debut 3rd in February, the twice C&D winner is 5 lb lower than his last winning mark. Blinkers go on for the first time. We could have an upset at big odds here.

I thought Matauri Bay would have a promising career ahead of him following an impressive debut, but things haven't panned out that way. The best since was a 3/4-length second in his next run, then a subsequent well-beaten 8th in a Group 1 at Saint-Cloud. He underwent wind surgery and returned after a six-month break to do only slightly better in two Group 1s. He then moved to G. Mosse in France, where he won on his second start. Following a 107-day break he ran a plugging third behind No Lunch in a €21K claimer last month. I'd say he'll strip fitter from that run and could hopefully sneak a place at least.

He weakened a furlong out on his seasonal reappearance after racing prominently, so that will have blown the cobwebs away. We'll definitely see better today off a career-low mark and first-time blinkers.

Iroko has been my favourite horse in training for a long time now, and I would dearly love to see him win this as it's been earmarked for ages. He was sent off favourite in this last year and finished 7.5L 4th when left with too much to do, but notably made up a lot of ground late on. His most recent run at Cheltenham was disappointing, but afterwards he was found to have inhaled some dirt. Fingers crossed.

The Greenall/Guerrerio outfit are in good fettle here this year with a Gaboriot's 40/1 5th of 24 in the Foxhunters on Thursday and Melon's 10/1 neck second in the Debenhams Hurdle yesterday. They have two in this, both owned by J. P. McManus, who has a very strong team of five who are all in the first seven in the betting. Jagwar appeals the most, as he could be; he's a tough cookie and looks well in at the weights.
