Cospicua

Daily Racing

Cospicua came with a wet sail when showing blistering speed to come from way off the pace to snatch a win here last month. That's two from two C&D wins and the 3 lb rise might not stop her.

Today's points-system top-rated is Gordon Elliott's Teahupoo, who bids to win this for the third time running. He lost a shoe at Cheltenham, which may have been a mitigating factor. Blinkers go on for the first time today, and a bounce-back looks on the cards.

Purely to try for second place in the naps table I need a long shot and Invincible Isaac fits that bill. I have the horse in my MTF notes with the words "Keep an eye on," without any other description. Looking at the replays of both races, you can see the colt ran very green, totally blowing the start on debut but made up ground to pass five of the fifteen runners. On his last run he was full of zest, up with the pace but ran green again 2f out. He got his act together too late but rallied to finish 1.7L fourth. The second in that race, Final Appeal, went on to win by 3.5L next time out. Ron Hornby did the business for me yesterday when I said his strength could help Brinton win and, lo and behold, he takes the ride. I hope he can do his magic today. This extra furlong is bound to help. Sired by July Cup winner Mayson, I think we could have a surprise here.

A speculative e.w. here because twenty-four of Tim Easterby's last forty runners have finished in the first four, five of which won. Although Barley is on a long losing run of twenty-four, it is notable that he has form figures of 424 when ridden by a claimer (one of which was an apprentice race). Princling has run two very encouraging seconds. Firstly, she just failed by a nose to catch 2/1 favorite Fort Rock (also won NTO) on debut. She was then well beaten by subsequent C2 winner Yazin. Both trainer and jockey are rare visitors here, but they both have good course strike rates.

Wolf Of Badenoch began his racing career with a bang, winning a 7f maiden here on debut and then following that with an excellent second in a C1 Group 2 at Goodwood. I have no idea why things went pear-shaped in the next thirteen runs, but Wolf Of Badenoch now finds himself in his first C6, racing off a career-low of 64. The yard are patient and capable of turning a horse around, and a change of fortune could be due.
