Kevin The Great has been in my notes since his 6th of 16 at Limerick in June last year, and admittedly he hasn't shown much except for a 3L 5th at Downpatrick last September. He weakened a furlong out on his seasonal reappearance after racing prominently, so that will have blown the cobwebs away. We'll definitely see better today off a career-low mark and first-time blinkers.

Forthfactor was a fair 7L 5th behind Bass Booster at Ascot in December. Reading Dan Skelton's tour quotes, he does have confidence in both of his entries. Forthfactor gets the each-way nod over Cooltobecareless because of the better odds.

Iroko has been my favourite horse in training for a long time now, and I would dearly love to see him win this as it's been earmarked for ages. He was sent off favourite in this last year and finished 7.5L 4th when left with too much to do, but notably made up a lot of ground late on. His most recent run at Cheltenham was disappointing, but afterwards he was found to have inhaled some dirt. Fingers crossed.

The Greenall/Guerrerio outfit are in good fettle here this year with a Gaboriot's 40/1 5th of 24 in the Foxhunters on Thursday and Melon's 10/1 neck second in the Debenhams Hurdle yesterday. They have two in this, both owned by J. P. McManus, who has a very strong team of five who are all in the first seven in the betting. Jagwar appeals the most, as he could be; he's a tough cookie and looks well in at the weights.

Cruz Control has won the past two runnings of this at 10/1 last year and 9/1 the year before and it shows it's not a race for favourites as only two have won in the past thirteen runnings. Of note too, Cruz Control was also pulled-up in his run before taking this last year.

Gordon Elliott has won the last four renewals of this, so Ballyfad must be respected, but there’s a niggle hanging over selecting him because of his poor show at Cheltenham. That makes me plump for Bossman Jack instead. He was running well and getting close in the Baring Bingham until an error at the last scuppered his chances. He should bounce back today.

Purely speculative selection, namely because stats show that Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith have only had two entries at Aintree in the two years they’ve trained together, and one of those was a winner.

Hold The Serve has improved leaps and bounds since his disappointing beaten-favourite debut in a C2 at Cheltenham. The fact that it was a Class 2 shows the confidence the connections have in the grey. He won the next three in good style, forging clear in two of those, and stayed on well in the most recent run. This 3-mile trip should suit him well.

Gabriot has been out of sorts lately, but he does have two placed efforts from four here at Aintree. His first run in this race saw him going well until unseating the rider at the Canal Turn. His next run over C&D saw him finish 4.25L third in the Grand Sefton. His next run here in November last year, again in the Grand Sefton, brought a 2L second. He was disappointing last time here when pulled up over 3m 2f. Gabriot clearly likes it here over C&D.

Unexpected Party

Daily Racing

J J O'Shea and Emmet Mullins have good records in this, with the former gaining two wins from six over the years, including last year's winner Gracchus Balme. Emmet Mullins has had a winner (It's On The Line) two years ago and a faller (who was going well) from two. However, what catches my eye is Dan Skelton has had the second three years running, so I think he's due one with Unexpected Party.
