Mud, mud, glorious mud. Beaten twice at odds-on in small fields. Despite appearances to the contrary, its heart may not be in it. A very tentative selection. Some form lines suggest it has a good chance unless one of the fresher horses takes to the conditions. But I think it may lack a little heart down in trip, and I think it is probably about a 7/1 shot.

Ran a decent first race, fluffing the start and subsequently beaten a neck by a horse who won again. Five-runner races are dire; I cannot judge how they will be run. Messing up the start again in a race can be costly. Sometimes, being pack animals, a bad start can lead to an improved performance as the horse battles to get to the forefront, especially in sprints. Sad, really; equine philosophy is clearly not my forte.

Ran second recently but was poor at jumping and ended up pretty tired. It had been off the track a while. Odds-on favourite in the race, raised in class, so the selection obviously has to demonstrate significant improvement in its jumping. If it does, yes, it has a decent chance; if not, forget it.

Given that Archie Watson has had a dire time of it of late, partly explained by the fact that last season's older horses have been handicapped accordingly, it was a meritorious performance by the selection to finish second, well beaten, on its first racecourse appearance. It ran green to a certain extent and should show improvement. Will it be enough? Not sure. There are some decent types in this.

Last time I backed the winner of a bumper, Keir Starmer was in short trousers, but the horse won very impressively on heavy going, finishing the race very well and relatively quickly. Harry Cobden booked; may not be good enough. Bit of a look and see, but a race I would normally involve myself in.

I may be wrong, but this may be Saffie O's first ride for Marco Botti. The horse is appallingly short in the market; however, I do not think it truly gets 7 furlongs. Then again, I am not the trainer. If the race is run at a normal pace, Saffie will be able to nurse the horse home, as it does have potential as demonstrated in its last few runs. 8 stone 4 pounds to carry ??" a couple of pounds above the jockey's lowest riding weight.

Should like the ground and distance. Has yet to capitalise on a promising season last year, but there have been reasons for its two no-shows this season. It is dangerous when betting to make too many excuses for getting beaten. It has to improve today, and we have a price for a horse who may well be a lot better than shown to date.

Enter Sandman has been heavily supported in the market and may well win. I find the claims for Havana Jag equally intriguing. It ran a decent race over 6f at Chelmsford about a month ago, showing keenness. It was bang up there 2 furlongs out and came again. Although 5th, the horse showed enough to suggest it could be involved here, beaten only about 2 lengths in that event.

Although lacking in experience, the selection showed enough first time out to merit a small nap. The form of the race it finished second in on November 25 has not exactly been advertised by his opponents, but nevertheless it was meritorious. Improvement should see it at least involved in this.

Marcus Tregoning, as we know, is a trainer of extreme quality and, while one of the top two in the betting, will probably contest the finish. Alta Rica is, in my opinion, way over-priced. Unpenalised for a decent run last time, it has a vein of quality running through it and is well up to this class. I feel it is about an 8/1 shot. There may well be reasons for its odds I am unaware of, but a small bet has to be placed.

Has it been raining? There are several horses in this that could easily win. It is a race really to leave alone unless you have a firm fancy. The selection ran a fair second here over a mile when relatively unfancied a couple of weeks ago. In these qualifier races in Ireland you often need a crystal ball because they often have an eye on the main prize. Mon Sherife's mark is not particularly favourable, but it should love the ground. It is, for me, at the right end of the handicap. Won an ordinary race OK last time, and the distance is within its proven compass.
