There has been a bit of money around for it, but it is a Fahey Racing Club horse, so that may not have a lot of significance. 9/2 is very short, but it is a Class 6, and if it has come to itself it has a chance, providing the rains don't alter the ground too much.

I think Aiden and Co. have decided that Albert's future lies in the sprinting milieu, and today is the day to prove it. The trainer was trumpeting the horse's chances for the 2000 Guineas and saying it was very fast. Assuming that to be the case, and based on shown racecourse form, it merits the nap today, dropping back in distance.

I am not backing Tim Easterby's Perfidia, which has been backed and is almost certain to be in the frame. Instead, with typical stupidity I will be backing Uncle Liam, who has yet to win in 10 racecourse events. However, well weighted and with local trainer Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan teaming up, the horse has shown fair form.

I am going for the lesser-fancied of the two in the market who won a four-runner race tidily. Of course you can tell nothing from that. In a sense I am resigned to the selection being beaten over this longer trip without a real prep run. But given his slightly fortuitous victory over Calandagan, that horse's subsequent exploits, and Jan's own very high-class form throughout last season, he is for me a must-bet under normal circumstances. Stick to the graded and listed races. Here is my advice (pain-filled). Suejet had the beating of the selection on their last run and class 3 may be a tiny bit high for this. The draw is paramount and its bias has been a bit bonkers of late, but common sense tells you, given the configuration of the track, providing you hold your position at the off, the inside saves you a lot of distance. Dad Barry used to love this meeting, and I do not know if the apple falls far from the tree. Charlie's string is a bit in and out, but it looks a little to me like he has targeted this race as a possible. 14 runners, tight track ??" you need luck. Jason Watson rides well around here. Fingers crossed.

Ridden by Saffie O. Used to be trained by her dad but has been with Mrs. Hamilton. Saffie has ridden her the last couple of times here. Ran OK in moderate races, 3rd last time, showing a decent bit of form. Rubbish race, however. Mrs. Hamilton does not have that many runners here and, I think, has yet to visit the winners' enclosure here. The horse, however, won here over 6f on April 25. Saffie will no doubt ride it differently as it is a furlong less. Is it speedy enough? I have not really seen evidence of it, so it is a guess. Kento is speedy and, with Rossa R up, may be a problem. Hamilton does not have that many runners.

I had backed Gewaan many times ante-post over the winter, so I was doubly sad to hear of his demise on the gallops. Much has been made of the fact that Aiden appears to have downgraded this race in his portfolio in recent years. I do not believe that, and I do not believe a top trainer would send a horse to a Group One of this stature at stud deliberately underdone. This year is full of possibles, but if I went for Gewaan I have to go for Gstaad.
