Last turf flat day of the season and atrocious ground to boot. The selection ran 4th in the 1000 Guineas, which was a while ago. Clearly been off its game since then. Whether 10 furlongs in heavy ground is the answer is dodgy. I am taking a chance. Class will out, but maybe just having a fingers-crossed outing.

In a lifetime of racing, Mick Easterby and team have had only a handful of runners at Bath with no success. The owners may operate down south, I do not know, but the horse stayed on well to finish 3rd on its first racecourse run. This does not look insurmountable given normal improvement.

I thought the horse made heavy weather of winning at Leicester, although it was described as staying on nicely. Drifting here and carrying a penalty, along with the favorite, one of the lower order horses could easily chin the main two. But Clive Cox's stable form has not been at its best, and the progress shown by this one suggests more to come.

While the Haggas favorite is an obvious winner, I shall be having a little tickle on the Jane C/Hyam horse, who is nicely bred and should love the conditions. It is likely, of course, that it is having a turnout prior to having a seasonal break, but I fancy it can outrun its odds whatever.

Who knows what the weather will be in darkest Newton Abbot, but I am actually pretty keen on the chances of the main selection. This is a very tough race, but the selection has had the requisite run to blow away the cobwebs and has the assistance of Mr. Freddie Keighley, a most able jockey claiming 8. He is especially proficient over hurdles. The horse has already shown its qualities with some decent outings, and my only problem is it is still 4 years of age.

This is a shocking race for a punter to have a bet in. Soft going, 2.4-mile hurdle, and you know nothing much about them. The only thing I know is one or two of them are going to be very good. Starzand is awfully short at the time of writing for a stable where they seem to need a run. It might win, but Olly Murphy and Sean B have been going great guns, and I will have a small bet. The horse is revved up for this.

I do not fancy it. I like Veraison ridden by Hollie D, but David Evans replaces Billy Whiz with Jack Callan claiming 5, which negates the penalty. It won well over the distance last time, which Veraison has yet to do. Given the merit of the selection's last performance, a repeat will see it go very close.

The favorite should win this and possibly Skiathos second. However, I cannot help but have a little interest in Richard Fahey's horse. The stable performed better in the last few weeks of the season. It was a poor class 5 it ran in, and it was as green as a green thing. The extra furlong is in its favor, and it will have to raise its game considerably.

Very much a hunch job. The horse has not been on track for over 300 days, and to my eye, the majority of the Nicholls horses have looked better for a run. But the horse has been favorite or 2nd favorite for his last 5 runs ridden by Cobden. Either a salute to its ability, trainer and jockey ability, or punter power. It has not run very well in those races, however, but the time off track, a master trainer, and a jockey of supreme confidence and ability may change that. Whatever the outcome, one to follow.

In his prime, the selection was, I would say, the best of the horses in this field. It has to shoulder 12 stone, so there is a distinct possibility that weight may be his undoing, although he is only fractionally above his last winning mark. Only 7 runners, really a race to watch rather than bet in. I have allowed sentiment to sway me.

These all-weather races, with a few exceptions, are tricky to get a handle on (they are all like that for you, pal). Charlie Hills has had a tough couple of months of late, but Alondra, who mainly races on the flat, comes back to the all-weather for this on a lower mark. Providing Jason Watson can rein in a little of the horse's innate enthusiasm, it has a great chance off a lower mark in a run-of-the-mill class 5.

Going described as good to soft. Well, I think that is doubtful as it has been hissing down for a couple of days. It may have missed the brunt of it, I guess.
