My kitchen flooded overnight, and I do not live that far from Sandown. Relatively speaking, assuming the track encountered the same weather, it should suit the selection very well. Better at six furlongs, stamina will come into play today, but the horse is also effective at five furlongs and should love the ground. The draw could be an issue, however. Drawn wide may not be great, and as a result, it is probably a point or two too short. You could easily pass, but I like it.

Madman seems a little overpriced to me. 11/4 fav in a class 6 finished 4th, ran ok, running on in a normal fashion over 6f at Kempton. 7f today should suit class 5, however, but Marquand retains the ride. Stable not really amongst the winners yet, drawn midfield which is OK.

Last chance saloon for me with this one. Coming down in the weights, down in grade, I suppose. Has been strongly involved in the market on the last 4 occasions but pretty much bombed out each time. Has to be in the first 2 for this, in truth, because you would be hard-pressed to find an easier race for a horse of quality. Weard, first-time blinkers, owned by Valmont, who have done pretty well with Beckett. Persisting with the horse suggests there is something there to work with.

Initially, I was going to go all in on Mister Winston, but on reflection, I am not sure that Goodwood will suit its running style. Linwood has run here, and the Hannon team are going well. Ridden by the hugely experienced Jamie Spencer, it has a good chance of improving on its 3rd when last here in a race that has worked out ok.

Won this a couple of years ago. First race for Mrs. Leech, sold out of Kevin Ryan's for 8,000 guineas. Is it going to win a Class 2 60 grand race at the York meeting first time up? Unlikely, and also has not been running well of late. However, a change of scene might spark a revival, and with 4 places on offer, a small punt will not dent the funds too much. Austrian Theory with Fentiman riding at 8st 4 lbs is a massive price, but probably a furlong or two too far.

Ralph Beckett is a class trainer, and this is an improving horse. The Eclipse Partnership, who own it, do quite well with their horses. It carries a penalty for its victory over a mile. Entered in a class 5 on Saturday, which bothers me slightly. Rossa Ryan back on board and dropped to 7f, which may be a problem. But 5 places again, this really is a golden age for punting in some respects. It won't last.

I hate these small group races. Minnie Hauk at 1/2 is not short enough. Why? It is a horse you want to go barmy over. Won two classics. Tadej has to give weight away and appears to be the class horse in the race. Four places on offer and 4/1 make it a bet for someone like me. The likelihood is that the weight will beat it. Archie W's stable has been a bit in and out form-wise, which is why Hollie D has not been hitting the numbers so much. She can ride at 7 stone 13 lb, so the horse has 24 pounds of lead in the saddle, which can sometimes make a difference. But H is a powerhouse and should negate that.

I have no idea why I persist in tipping and betting in these events when there are easier targets elsewhere. I am either a mug, or I like the quality. This horse was introduced on the racecourse into a Group 2, then picked up a novice when odds-on. Was it a tester, or do the connections really think it may be decent? God knows with fillies, and in this race, you could pick a half dozen with an equal shout. But I presume the selection is better than it appears.

For me, this race concerns three horses: the selection Lil Guff and King of Stars. Cowell is another trainer who has not got his string in full swing yet. This is going to be run at breakneck speed, and Billy Whizz in the saddle excels in an event of this nature. The selection should improve since his second at Ascot, closely matched with King of Stars, and the horse's general profile is just below top level.
