So many owners and trainers like a win leading up to the Christmas period that this low-level fare becomes even trickier. The booking of Rossa Ryan for Mercy Rimell suggests a gesture of intent, but the horse, reaching veteran stage, needs considerable improvement to figure. However, the distance and track suit, and I fancy the horse to improve despite going through my worst tipping spell for 20 years. The horse, despite finishing 8th of 9 at Wolverhampton last time, was only beaten 2 1/4 L, although it was a poor race.

Ran okay last time after a wind operation. Given my tipping of late, I doubt everything, but Charlie Longsdon does not have a vast number of runners here. However, those he does have tend to run well. I think this horse is overpriced and should be half the odds currently on display.

This is rapidly becoming the case of these horses are the ones not to back, but they do not come much shrewder than his trainer. Although early on in the season, like many others in this race, this is a target. They seldom venture to Cheltenham, but this is a 50 plus thousand pound handicap. Ran a decent pipe opener first time up, fading late on in a 2 mile 3f handicap. With the absence of Ryan M, Danny Mac takes the ride. Well weighted, should be okay on the ground.

According to the weather forecast, Cheltenham is due to suffer a deluge of rain this afternoon, and I believe them (sucker). 'Heads Up' performed well in the Bumper at the festival and won its subsequent hurdle race with ease. In some quarters, it is a good thing for this. Me, well, I am not so sure. It is probably going to get into the ground. Saturday will be dire. This is a cracking race, and if it wins, follow it.

When you back a horse over hurdles on its racecourse debut, it is a bit like saying of a human athlete, he runs fast, but the long jump, dunno, a leap of faith. The selection won a maiden race at Monksgrange, hurrah, and is likely to need the run. Betting will probably tell us everything. The favorite must have a decent chance, but I like my favorites to be 90 percent likely prior to.

Last turf flat day of the season and atrocious ground to boot. The selection ran 4th in the 1000 Guineas, which was a while ago. Clearly been off its game since then. In a lifetime of racing, Mick Easterby and team have had only a handful of runners at Bath with no success. The owners may operate down south, I do not know, but the horse stayed on well to finish 3rd on its first racecourse run. This does not look insurmountable given normal improvement.

I thought the horse made heavy weather of winning at Leicester, although it was described as staying on nicely. Drifting here and carrying a penalty, along with the favorite, one of the lower order horses could easily chin the main two. But Clive Cox's stable form has not been at its best, and the progress shown by this one suggests more to come.

While the Haggas favorite is an obvious winner, I shall be having a little tickle on the Jane C/Hyam horse, who is nicely bred and should love the conditions. It is likely, of course, that it is having a turnout prior to having a seasonal break, but I fancy it can outrun its odds whatever.

Who knows what the weather will be in darkest Newton Abbot, but I am actually pretty keen on the chances of the main selection. This is a very tough race, but the selection has had the requisite run to blow away the cobwebs and has the assistance of Mr. Freddie Keighley, a most able jockey claiming 8. He is especially proficient over hurdles. The horse has already shown its qualities with some decent outings, and my only problem is it is still 4 years of age.

This is a shocking race for a punter to have a bet in. Soft going, 2.4-mile hurdle, and you know nothing much about them. The only thing I know is one or two of them are going to be very good. Starzand is awfully short at the time of writing for a stable where they seem to need a run. It might win, but Olly Murphy and Sean B have been going great guns, and I will have a small bet. The horse is revved up for this.

I do not fancy it. I like Veraison ridden by Hollie D, but David Evans replaces Billy Whiz with Jack Callan claiming 5, which negates the penalty. It won well over the distance last time, which Veraison has yet to do. Given the merit of the selection's last performance, a repeat will see it go very close.

The favorite should win this and possibly Skiathos second. However, I cannot help but have a little interest in Richard Fahey's horse. The stable performed better in the last few weeks of the season. It was a poor class 5 it ran in, and it was as green as a green thing. The extra furlong is in its favor, and it will have to raise its game considerably.
