I had backed Gewaan many times ante-post over the winter, so I was doubly sad to hear of his demise on the gallops. Much has been made of the fact that Aiden appears to have downgraded this race in his portfolio in recent years. I do not believe that, and I do not believe a top trainer would send a horse to a Group One of this stature at stud deliberately underdone. This year is full of possibles, but if I went for Gewaan I have to go for Gstaad.

To me this seems like a terrific bet. Despite drifting in the betting for the Kevin Pauley 75th Birthday Handicap, this looks like a Gaye Kelleway number. It has been favourite or second favourite 7 out of the last 9 times it has run, which might mean its gaggle of owners like a punt, the horse is ungenuine, or it is being targeted. A nice little Class 6 handicap on a Sunday. Saffie O up; weight dropping. Best chance for a long while.

Mark Rimell's strike rate does not bear close inspection, but the horse ran a decent enough race first time up, wearing ear plugs throughout (help, I have gone deaf), running far too freely and bombing out at the end. If Saffie O is able to use her skills, she can reach the podium.

It was a pretty tasty race at Kempton, where the selection finished sixth. I have no doubt I have lost my last few remaining marbles, as Charlie H is still easing his string along and the horse is unlikely to be fit. Much as I like being with an Easterby horse, he needs a few more winners on the board before I trust the string are up for it. Ay Up Duck and Gaye K's representative could cause an issue, but I shall stick head down with the tenuous form line that attracts me.

Nigel Hawke bungs out Modern Style. Double lively, carrying a penalty. It won very well over 2 miles five days ago in an all-aged event. It may well win as it is odds-on, but I have an issue with four-year-olds against older horses, especially over longer trips, and a Frankel colt to boot. This is a fairly poor race and it may well make me look stupid, not for the first time. The selection, although still without a win, would try the patience of an embryo saint. Has ability if it chooses to use it. A bit keen even now if James Davies can get it into a rhythm it could spring a surprise

Have Secret is not traditionally a horse that comes good early in the season. There is a tenuous form link with Savvy Victory. I do not know if there is an issue in the Fahey stable or if horses have simply been handicapped out of contention. I am fully aware that the likelihood of the selection winning is remote. William Buick has only had a couple of rides previously for the trainers. The price is probably a fair reflection of her chances. She won nicely in a Class 2 three weeks ago. Make no mistake: there are some good ones in this. The winter months may have seen a deal of improvement. The selection ran OK in some group events last year, finishing in midfield. Today, drawn on the wide outside, I am of the opinion that William B is right up there as one of the best jockeys in the world. If the horse is good enough, it will be in the best position.
