my first introduction to horse racing was going to the 1956 derby with my grandad and the interest has stayed with me for a lifetime . form and race study makes all the difference between failure and success a rushed prep ends in failure discipline and study with a sprinkling of intuition ends almost always with a good result if in doubt dont bet

I would call this a tentative nap if such a thing exists. This is an especially hard race to predict. Roland Garros ran a most ordinary race at Southwell, and the Gosdens have given the horse a couple of months off track. Hughie Morrison, my nemesis, runs Azahara Palace, and virtually all other runners have a chance. Roland Garros, however, is well handicapped despite being lightly raced, down 2 furlongs to 1 mile 2 furlongs, which in my opinion, it would be more suited to. Only 4 years old, however, will need to be ready and at the top of his game.

Personally, I thought Clive Lee rode Blue Rc last time like he was sure he would win. But the horse was both green and a little lazy, and in the end, only just bested I Am Maximus (who finished subsequently 4th in a 16 grand Newbury event), finishing clear of the field. This is turf and a far better race. The horse clearly has ability. Will it be enough?

On a personal note, as my tipping is so poor at present, I shall keep my money in my Sky until the Guineas meeting. Jersey Rocs has yet to win on turf, and Charlie H had quite a torrid time last flat season, but my admiration for his training skills remains undiminished. Although I think the selection is quite harshly handicapped in this, considering it has the services of Cieren Fallon, who is peerless in these events, it should be fitter than most, having run in late February on the A/W. It drops down in distance and has a chance to prove its turf credentials. Amayretto for Tim E has the potential to be a job horse in this.

Despite Buick riding, the prices would indicate this is the stable's second string after its very poor run on the 12th of this month at Newbury. This is a wonderful field, and if I owned any one of them, I would be doing cartwheels followed by a spell in intensive care. Has the horse prospered over the winter given its running in the Dubai Duty Free? You would say no, but such was the quality of its form last year. I have to give it another chance, and despite all the negatives, 11/1 is just too big to pass up.

The Bowens combine here in an effort for the selection to obtain the hat trick. It is entirely likely that, should the jumping hold up, they will do so. Distance should not prove an issue. The horse looks well-treated, all things considered. The horse has been raised 6 pounds but has been victorious on far higher.

Probably too novice for this, but it is a long hike in the horse box. Improved a great deal hurdling, but the last race was just a 3-runner event, which was a bit like an exercise gallop. There are a plethora of hardened racehorses in this. Willie and Dan are both anxious to snag the 22 thousand first prize. Given the odds, skill of the trainer and jockey, and that Nichols is super competitive, chances are good, providing it stays the extra distance, which it should, I think.

Does John Butler get many 18 to 1 winners? I doubt it. But nevertheless, it has not been out for over 200 days since it left Stuart Williams' yard. I fail to understand why in its last race it ran in a Group 3 race at 200/1 where it had zero chance. It is a good job I am not a trainer. I simply do not understand the thinking behind these things. From Williams to Butler is pretty much the same thing, isn't it? Anyway, perhaps some magic can be worked. SDS booked either because he knows horses or it actually has a chance. Probably the former.

Gary Moore very unusually runs three in this and may well win with one of them. But I have gone with Hughie Morrison's selection. I can count the number of times I have backed a Hughie horse on one hand, as he is much too canny for me to fathom. The handicapper is often quite lenient with his charges, although I am certain the trainer would not concur. Hollie D is riding 2 lbs above her lowest riding weight, so not a lot of lead in the saddle. A course winner and just about stays. Low weight should help. The horse has been gelded in the last few months, so no idea if it is fit. Hollie has an indifferent record at the track. Hughie, however, has a lifetime record of over 20 percent with runners here. I am not sure about the distance, but the low weight could swing it.

Sometimes I want to shout out loud about the actions of the handicapper. An eight-pound rise for winning an A/W pretty much run-of-the-mill race, which was due in no small part to the forcing tactics of a very good ride from Tom Marquand. The horse has never won on turf, and a class 3 race is a tough ask. Yes, it seems to be improving. Robert Cowell runs 3, all with chances given the ground. Blink and you will miss it if it wins. The handicapper will say job done, but I say way too punitive on the evidence you had to hand. I think the selection and One Night Stand will lead. One Night Stand getting on nevertheless was fav for this last year and blew out for a number of reasons. One or two may come and best them. The rest are certainly capable, but they are my two against the field.

Gordon Bennett, it is the Gavin and Gordon show. Only having a punt because it is the Irish National, which is totally the wrong reason to have a bet. I am also predictable in the type of horse I back in these: 8, 9, or 10, with a reasonable weight, a decent jockey, and a horse who will not be too disadvantaged by the going. Although not too sure in this case about the going, but with 6 places on offer and taking into account its C/V, it's worth a very, very small punt.

The interestingly sponsored Tip Top Lavish Latrine Handicap Hurdle is a tricky event. Speiriuil seems to like the trip but could be better at a furlong shorter. Lorcan Murtagh has ridden him in the last 10 of 11 races that he has run, with one victory to his name. Nigel Hawke regularly has runners at Chepstow with a mild degree of success. Easter Monday is often a day to keep your money in your sky for punting purposes, though of course, the winners are always there. Raised nine pounds, I think, since its last victory, which is a bit harsh. I feel one for a mild each way rather than all of your cash plus 3 buttons type of bet (always bet within your means).

Over the course of the season, Harry Cobden and Sean Bowen have been far and away the best riders over jumps regularly this season. A super card at Plumpton in which Dan S and Willie M battle out the trainers' championship. I personally hope Dan S and team have worked like Trojans with a team of largely ordinary horses to reach the position they have. Willie has long been recognized as tip-top in the British Isles and Ireland, again largely at the start due to his own efforts. Wicked Thoughts is a lightly raced horse and may have been let in a little lightly in this. It does not have the quality of form of some of his opponents, but in Harry Cobden, you have a highly intelligent jockey who guides his horses supremely well throughout the race. Providing the speed of the race does not cause errors, it could cause a mild surprise.

Veteran chases... yikes, like a marathon for the over 70's. Eldorado Allen was probably the best of these in his prime, for me anyway. The Widdow Maker, with two d's, takes on Spyglass Hill again, and I suppose they have equal chances. TWM having been the victor by a small margin in a 4-runner Veterans chase on the 18th of March. That was Exeter, and this is Haydock. If the selection jumps round without making rickets, it has a shout of being in at the finish. But that is a big but... lightly raced for an old 'un, the price is truly a reflection both of stable form and possibility.

A bet solely based on price. The finish is almost certain to concern the two overnight market principals. Anno Domini has by far the best form of the field, but unless it has muscled up a bit over the winter, it may fade. Richard Hughes has booked Ryan M for the ride, and the horse is rated a lot lower than the rest of the field. It may be a 'so what do you think?' post-race ride, or it may have a genuine shout. Nicely bred, the distance may be a tad on the short side this year, but at 9/1, despite the quality of the top two and, to me, the questionable form at present of some of the Appleby stable, a small win bet is not out of place.

I know well Indian Springs ran a cracking race when 3rd of 11 at Kempton in December on the A/W and has a decent chance to take this. HQ is always tricky, especially for relative newbies, but providing growth has been forthcoming in the intervening months, should have a decent chance.
