Nigel Hawke bungs out Modern Style. Double lively, carrying a penalty. It won very well over 2 miles five days ago in an all-aged event. It may well win as it is odds-on, but I have an issue with four-year-olds against older horses, especially over longer trips, and a Frankel colt to boot. This is a fairly poor race and it may well make me look stupid, not for the first time. The selection, although still without a win, would try the patience of an embryo saint. Has ability if it chooses to use it. A bit keen even now if James Davies can get it into a rhythm it could spring a surprise

Forget that. It ran a decent 3rd before on the all-weather and has been favourite the last 3 times. The owners may be supreme optimists, or? It has never won on turf or the all-weather. A.o. mighty short considering a small punt.

Have Secret is not traditionally a horse that comes good early in the season. There is a tenuous form link with Savvy Victory. I do not know if there is an issue in the Fahey stable or if horses have simply been handicapped out of contention. I may well be totally off in my understanding of events, but it ran well first time up. Likes the ground and is a solid chance. Savvy Victory and Insanity are dangers.

Tricky. I prefer the possibilities of Room Fourteen over a mile and 2 furlongs. Turf is an unknown and, really, it should drift in the betting. King of Berkshire, part-owned by Mrs. E. Ramsden and trained by the amazing Andrew Balding, and Pantiles Gift have obvious chances. But over a little further on good-to-firm turf, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith selection may come good.

Gouken an obvious danger. The selection ran well first time up, finishing 2nd to Wylie Cop, who has done little to advertise the form subsequently. However, the first two finished well clear of the third, and Nebulon finished nicely considering it was its first run of the new campaign. Owned by Amo Racing, it has potential.

Certainly needed its first run after a break, getting a wee bit of help from the handicapper. It has not won since it strung a trio of wins together in the middle of last year. Ruth Carr's horses tend to come good at the same time. Owned by The Ruth Carr Racing Club, so you would hope to see a little money around for it. Definitely good enough, providing it is ready.

Nine times out of ten I would back Albert Einstein after an ordinary run, but I am at a slight loss to understand what is happening with Gonna Fly. It won a fairly ordinary Class 4 last year. Zavateri has some impressive entries this year. Beckett, as we all know, is a top trainer, and the winter months may have been kind.

I am fully aware that the likelihood of the selection winning is remote. William Buick has only had a couple of rides previously for the trainers. The price is probably a fair reflection of her chances. She won nicely in a Class 2 three weeks ago. Make no mistake: there are some good ones in this. The winter months may have seen a deal of improvement. The selection ran OK in some group events last year, finishing in midfield. Today, drawn on the wide outside, I am of the opinion that William B is right up there as one of the best jockeys in the world. If the horse is good enough, it will be in the best position.

I have a feeling I am a doughnut because Appleby's 3-year-olds do not seem fully wound up. Won nicely first time up. Expensive at 500,000 guineas, but it is sandwich money to Godolphin, and they have classic entries coming out of their ears. Who knows what the winter has done to some of them and how forward they are. You can get some really decent-price winners if you have a bit of inside info.

I like Scheffler and the selection in this. It's entirely possible Jack Channon is just running to get a mark, as it has another entry in three days' time. Despite finishing fifth last time, it finished off well and displayed promise. I would sooner have a small bet at a ludicrous 33/1 than a small bet on Scheffler, the second favorite, who did show a deal of promise on its racecourse debut.

Do horses tend to overjump when they come back from abortive chase missions? Well, if trained by a very good trainer, the horse itself is prone to the odd jumping error, but all in all has an excellent chance in this if things go to plan. I am not a great fan of the Gosden team and it has cost me dear over the years, but Asmeralda won his Class 5 opener at Kempton decently. Entered in the One Thousand Guineas, this is a sighter to its showing, I guess, if they take up the challenge. Four places??"the owner has a pretty good rate of success with John and Thady. The winter has been slightly kinder in the south, so the fillies may be a little more forward. A paddock check is a must really before laying down the folding.

A truly terrific race. If you had followed these all season, you would come out ahead. Any one of the seven can win. The marginal drifting of Isaac Newton suggests he is not fully wound up, and it is a bit short. Possibly Karl Burke sent Shayem for the $3 million Saudi Derby ??" it bombed, but there could be a host of reasons. Wareeth won a Class 4 by 14 lengths, so it could be anything. The others all boast impressive form. Charlie Appleby has his horses forward. It seems a little money for the selection. He won a nice race at Goodwood last back end and has no doubt strengthened up over the winter. No surprise to see a 20/1 shot win, but for me the safety shot.

I know the Hugo Palmer horse is well fancied and they kind of target this race, but he is a big fellow and, without seeing him in the paddock, I reckon he will need the run. I was drawn to the selection and Blue Courvoisier, but the Hannon horse ran over a mile last year and has filled out a bit in the meantime. I like this time of year, even if I bomb, because you can see how they have fared in the winter.

Although I have napped it, this is a mighty tight race, and I would not be surprised to see a length between the first four. I was sweet on Heracles, who has been ridden by Mulrennan a lot of late, but he renews an on/off partnership with Smarts. Not entirely sure it has the toe over 5 to give weight away. We shall see.

I think it is true to say Harry Dereham is proving to be a horse trainer of some significance, improving year on year. Easily beaten into 2nd by Watmui last time out, it still showed enough to be the victor in this at ludicrously cramped odds.

The last National winner I backed was Comply or Die, so that tells you all one needs to know. The selection is normally a sound jumper, is ridden by a jockey with a racing brain (a must), and has put in some excellent performances. An import from France for the R/S team. I must confess I have never come across the rider Mr. Georges Walkingshaw before, but my lack of knowledge is no barrier to competence. I have been going to back Grey Diamond forever, but on reflection I do not think the run at Cheltenham is going to work in his favour. Heartwood looks very good indeed and is an obvious winner, you would think the extra distance would not be in his favour given his normal running style, but I have huge respect for Joseph's training acumen and things may just work out. Worth a small bet at the odds.
