Ran a decent race in December at Southwell, beaten by Zulu Warrior. Supported quite well by followers of the Major. No doubt likes the track and has a 30 percent chance of involvement.

Stuart Williams is 3-handed in this, and so it is anybody's guess which of the three is fancied most, if at all. The a/election is 10 now, so drawing his pension but holding his form to date. Harry Vigors, who I presume is part of the racing family, has a great record for a seven-pound claimer. The wide draw is a bit off-putting for me, but overall a decent profile.

Anyone who is going to take 1/7 needs to be put in a locked room with no phone until the race is over. Let the race go. The first two in the betting will probably finish in that order. It is a poor race, but I am prepared to lose a few quid on the selection. I will be happy if it finishes in the first six. Showed a glimmer over hurdles the first time over hurdles before weakening and pulling up.

To my surprise, I note the selection has won 6 out of 26 on the all-weather first race since a wind op. The major stumbling block to them all is Baldomero, a Mick Appleby special on a three-timer. An interesting race. Prior to a closer look, I thought the selection was one-paced. Now I'm not so sure.

I think this is a decent dog. Plenty in with a shout. I do not know how the track is running, and I do not like backing dogs unless we have had a long spell of dry weather. Standing room only at Southwell today (joke). Tadreeb ran a fair race back after a couple of months' break, finishing 6th in a 7f event at Lingfield. Havana Sky, an opponent today, ran second, but I never back Ed Dunlop-trained horses ??" just a mad punter prejudice. Tadreeb is now 8 years of age, so improvement in general is unlikely, but he finished well last time to be beaten just over 2 lengths. Oliver Searle takes off 5 pounds for 4 places, and the price attracts in a race of this ilk.

Dartrey may well be a class apart from these, but is very short to be investing on. Mereside Princess is a horse of contradictions. While often appearing to have the capacity for victory, it has yet to do so. One of those maddening horses whereby everything has to fall into place. New Year's Day is always a day lived in a dream state; racing is no exception. Worth a small each-way in a race of this quality.
