I like to get my bets on early in the day, so I have an aversion to the reserve system in Irish racing, as I have to wait until mid-morning to confirm what is and isn't running. What I am not averse to is backing a reserve that gets a run, especially when he appears to have as good a chance as Porsche Lad, who was staying on fourth over today's course and distance last week. A repeat will see him contend again.

Final Straw represents a top stable, and looked intriguing as he makes his handicap debut stepped up markedly in trip, with headgear on and classy conditional claiming three pounds booked to ride. Unfortunately the layers haven't taken any chances with his odds, and better value may lie with Hurst Hill. The Seamus Mullins trained gelding is a proven stayer and may have needed his recent run at Plumpton where he weakened badly late on. He had previously been in top form before taking two months off, and remains competitively weighted. His near double-figure odds look quite appealing.

Although approaching the veteran stage, he appears to have retained much of his ability, having made the frame three times from four outings since joining his current stable. Although beaten twelve lengths at Nottingham last time, it was still a commendable performance as he was well clear of the remainder of the field, as those behind finished at big intervals in the heavy ground. Runs off a career-low mark today and is unlikely to be far away.
