The Anthony Honeyball-trained SOUTHFIELD FINALE makes plenty of appeal in this line-up. The twice-race 5-year-old was last seen in April when second to Walk On High over 2m2f. He was no match for the winner that day, but that winner has since notched up a hat-trick of wins over hurdles, and so that form has worked out very well. The going was heavy the last day, and he acted well on that, meaning that he is not likely to be affected by the testing surface at this track. He saw the race out strongly last time, and so the step up in trip today should only enhance his chances. He has a 204-day absence to overcome, but if stripped fit for his first start this season, he should be tough to beat.

OUR BOY STAN made a strong impression on debut in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. He was 2 lengths second behind Precious Metal, who has since finished second in a 2-mile novice hurdle at Stratford. He then went one better on his next start, winning a 2-mile bumper at Kempton in good style. The horse he beat that day (Moneygarrow) has since run well in the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle, finishing third. Both of his starts have come on ground with soft in the description, and so he should feel comfortable on this track today. This progressive 4-year-old is a half-brother to Go Dante, who won the 2-mile Imperial Cup at Sandown last season. Provided he handles the 260-day absence, he should be up to winning this.

With a mark of 144, SOUL ICON is the second-highest rated in this seven-runner field. He was initially entered in the 2m2f Haldon Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Exeter yesterday, but has instead chosen to make the significant step up in trip to 3m2f. He finished ninth in the 3-mile Topham at Aintree last April off a mark of 145. His best form has come over much shorter, like when beating Edwardstone by 3½ lengths in the 2-mile Grade 2 Desert Orchid Handicap Chase last year. He was rated 143 that day and has since failed to make a significant impression in three starts over longer trips. However, he relishes quicker ground, and it looks like he will get his wish with firm in the going description at the time of writing. The jockey, Toby McCai-Mitchell, takes off a valuable 5lbs, having recorded a 23.53% strike rate to a level stakes profit of +49.09 over the past 12 months. Trainer Keiran Burke is also in profit (+5.00) with his chasers over the past 12 months, having had one winner and two placed from 12 runners.

The winner of this race 12 months ago, KING TURGEON makes his seasonal reappearance. He had a run under his belt this time last year having won a 3m2f handicap chase at Chepstow a fortnight before. It’s no concern that he comes here this year without a run as he does go well fresh. He was rated 127, carrying 10st2lbs when winning that day. He has taken a big hike in the weights since and is now rated 137 and will carry 11st5lbs today. He has won off 133 and was placed off a mark of 139. Those two efforts came over 3m2f and he drops back in trip today on ground that has soft in the description which will suit him. He disappointed when pulled up in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival last March, a race in which he was never involved. I would expect him to be ridden prominently here and get a clear sight of fences which he took to very well last time. His task is made tougher with the extra weight this time around but he is proven to see the trip out strongly and he is an improving 7-year old.

This third and final game of this Ashes Test Series. Australia have won both games thus far, winning 6-26 in game 1 and 4-14 in game 2. Game 1 saw England show good defence early in the game, and together with a litany of Australian handling errors, they were able to keep the score-line close. However, the second-half was a different story, with Australia eradicating those errors, scoring three tries and cruising to a dominant away win. Nathan Cleary was a perfect five from five with his kicking in that game, and they looked much more assured from the boot than England did. Game 2 was a similar story with England able to stay in touch in the first-half but ultimately blown away in the second. A handicap of +/-14.5 points is essentially the midpoint of the aggregate winning margin (30 points) over the two games. England lost by a smaller margin in the second game, but there was still that gulf in class between the two sides that was apparent. With Australia having secured the series win, it would be no surprise to see them run rampant in this final game to secure a clean sweep of victories.

9-year-old DOM OF MARY makes his seasonal reappearance today, having last been seen back in April when pulled up in the Scottish Grand National. He has since moved yard with James Owen, now the trainer. He’s not a frequent visitor to this track, having only had one previous runner here. However, he appears to have a big chance today. This gelding last won at Plumpton in the Sussex National (7/1/2024) off a mark of 118 and was second at the same track off a mark of 125 three starts back (10/2/2025). He races off that same mark today, but with a 3lb claimer (Nathan Howie) on board. His best efforts have come on Soft or Heavy. At the time of writing, it does appear that there will be enough cut in the ground for his liking. Whilst he is a proven stayer over 3m4f, he has won over trips shorter than today. If sharp enough first time out this season, I would expect him to be very hard to beat.
