There are some really nicely bred sorts in this five-runner race, and OUTFLANK is one of them. He is a gelding by Churchill and was bought for 750,000 guineas at the sales. It's always a bit of a guessing game with these newcomers, but there has been market support for this two-year-old on debut, and it would be no surprise to see him winning this in style.

The standard is set by the 128-rated KRIPTICJIM, who got off the mark over hurdles at the second time of asking last time out. He travelled into the race well that day and saw out the 2m3f trip strongly to win by 3¼ lengths, suggesting that today’s slightly longer distance will only further enhance his chances. That was only a four-runner affair, but he beat a 128-rated horse that day, and those lining up in this race will have to improve considerably on their previous efforts to be able to surpass that sort of level. He has the penalty to carry today, but he looks the sort who will prove a class above these, and he makes for a strong selection.

INSPIRED went off a well-supported 4/7f when second over C&D on debut. He was very green that day, and that probably cost him in the end as he failed to run down the eventual winner. He should have learned plenty from that effort, and that effort looks like the strongest on offer here in what is otherwise a weak-looking maiden.

For all that it was a weak race last time, MANGANESE ran down a 1/4 favourite to win by two lengths. That came after she was nearly taken out of the race by a loose horse early on. She was intending to set the pace that day, and for a first-time starter over hurdles she showed an excellent attitude. That effort came on ground described as soft (heavy in places). Today's ground will not be as testing, but she shouldn't be inconvenienced by that. She is the only filly in the race and will have to contend with a penalty for that win last time out, but it would be no surprise to see her prove too strong for her male counterparts here. She is very appealing at the current price.

THANH NAM has been admirably consistent over the past four months. His last start at this track was over 7f back in October when he finished fourth of nine. He had a rating of 49 that day but has since put in three solid runs at this level, finishing second twice before landing his first win last time out over the mile at Chelmsford. He raced off a mark of 51 that day and, whilst he has to carry top weight today with 4 lb extra on his back, he looks the sort who can improve past his current mark. He likes to be ridden prominently and should be able to get a good position from stall 5. There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of pace in this race, which should suit this colt who has shown speed over shorter trips. This is a very low-level affair and plenty of these will have to improve markedly on recent form to make any meaningful impression. Whilst the level of form is not hugely impressive, the selection is proven at this level and he sets a good standard for this opposition.

AL QAYSIYYA was an eye-catcher when second on an odds-on favourite over 7f at Kempton last time. She was away quickly and travelled into the race well, looking a much-improved sort from her first two career starts. This Godolphin-owned two-year-old is a daughter of Dubawi out of a daughter of Lope de Vega, and so she can be expected to be winning a Class 5 novice race like this. As is often the case in this company, there are potential improvers who could spring a surprise, but the selection sets a strong standard for this level and she warrants the respect she gets from the market.

ANGEL GABRIEL has finished second on both starts to date. His first run came over this trip on the turf at Doncaster, where the ground was heavy. This two-year-old was clearly learning on the job that day, having been slow out of the gates but made a good impression when finishing well. He was subsequently sent off a 4/7f last time when switching to the all-weather at Southwell. This son of Mehmas was away much better that day but was no match for the winner, who won by an impressive five lengths. He looked more comfortable on a sounder surface last time and can be expected to act well on the Polytrack. While he failed to land the short odds last time out, he was well supported, and so it would be no surprise to see him repay those who wish to remain loyal and follow him in again today.

Corniche Girl

It took Corniche Girl six starts to get off the mark, and she has failed to win in four starts since. Whilst far from prolific, she finds herself in a very weak-looking Class 6 nursery and, off the back of a good effort in Class 5 company, she should prove tough to beat. She was fourth of seven when racing over 5f here last time but was only beaten by 1¼ lengths. The second and third that day went on to win next time out. The time before that she was second over this trip at Chelmsford, and that form looks particularly good for this level, with the third, fourth and sixth that day all having won since. She was slowly away last time over the shorter trip. She is drawn widest of all today, but that shouldn’t be a major issue with the race appearing to have plenty of pace in it. She will have more time to settle today, and with a strong early gallop expected, this looks like a race well suited to her running style.

Since the early prices were posted for this race, CONMAN JOHN has been a noticeable drifter in the market. At the time of writing, he remains favourite, and I would expect him to go off as so. That early drift is a slight concern, but provided that he is fit for today, he should be very tough to beat. He has won both of his starts over hurdles this season, including a win over C&D (Good, good to soft in places) last time out. That was a step up in trip from 2m1f the time before, and he looked much the better for it, seeing the race out strongly after racing prominently. He has been given a mark of 135, which sets a very strong standard in what otherwise looks like a weak race for a Grade 2. It would be no surprise to see him prove to be better than that mark, with further progression expected ahead of today. Very much the one to beat, and at the current price looks like very good value.

This race revolves around KATEIRA, who is 13 lbs clear on official ratings. She was by no means disgraced when fourth in Grade 2 company last time out. That came after a 28-length victory over the 152-rated Golden Ace the time before. Today marks a significant step back up in trip, where she has proven effective in the past. The drying ground will only enhance her chances, and provided she doesn’t make any major errors in the jumping department, she should win this in style.

The very progressive JAGWAR is a strong selection today. Having been rated a high of 119 over hurdles, he started out with a mark of 118 over fences, winning his first two starts. He has won 4 of his five starts over fences, including a win at the festival here back in March (Good to Soft). That win came off a mark of 139, and now rated 148, he will have gone up 30 lbs after one season over fences. The handicapper still doesn’t appear to have got to grips with this horse. The fact that this is his first run of the season, having had a career-long layoff (275 days), is a slight concern. However, he has gone well fresh and possesses the best course form with that win over C&D last time. He will get similar ground conditions today and should prove a solid selection.

There was plenty to like about the way that KINGSTON QUEEN finished the race over 2½ miles (Chepstow, good to soft) last time out. She beat Kripticjim by seven lengths that day, who was a further 1¼ lengths ahead of Modern Man. Those two went on to win next time out, albeit in weaker races than this. The selection was twice a winner in bumpers, including one in listed company. She finished a very encouraging third in Grade 2 company at Aintree in April. The second that day (La Conquiere) has won on both starts over hurdles this season. She drops back in trip today on ground that will suit. At the time of writing, FAR TOO FIZZY and Kuiama are the top two in the market. The former beat Kuiama by ¾ length when winning over C&D two starts back in a nursery. He should have the beating of that runner again, especially with Kuiama not being ideally drawn for a filly that likes to lead. Today’s selection disappointed when fifth at Wolverhampton (6f) last time. However, he was slow away that day and had too much to do from the back of the field. Rossa Ryan gets aboard today, a jockey who has a good record when riding for David Loughnane. He has had 12 winners and 14 placed finishes from 65 runners over the past 12 months (strike rate: 18.46%), recording a level stakes profit of +9.58. Rated as high as 124 in his peak, GUERNESEY is by no means the force of old, but he retains sufficient ability to win a Class 5 handicap such as this. He races off 98 today, having finished second to Be The Difference last time, a horse that has since gone on to win back-to-back handicaps off a mark of 101. Two starts back, he finished fourth behind the aforementioned horse and a couple of next-time-out winners. That form looks solid, and with the ground being very testing today, he should be seen to good effect. He has to give weight to all but one of his rivals today, and while he is on a 22-race losing streak, he has dropped well below that last winning mark of 119 and looks well treated at the age of 9.
