MONDO MAN is a 4-year-old with some solid form on the flat, finishing three lengths behind Illinois in a Group 3 back in May and fifth in the French Derby last year. He has much more modest form over hurdles and was not disgraced when ninth in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival this year. He enters handicap company for the first time today and looks potentially well treated, especially with the make-up of the race. He is a horse who needs cover, having shown to be keen in races. He looks sure to get that in this 13-runner field. Being a hold-up sort, he should benefit from a hotly contested pace battle in this race. Plenty of these like to go forward, which should set it up for a closer, especially on this more testing track. He was narrowly beaten in a novice hurdle race (2m, Good to Soft, good in places) at Lingfield last month. That came off the back of a 203-day absence. He rallied well towards the line that day and, with further progress expected, he should be a big danger late on here.

THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE was third in this race last year off a mark of 155. He finished 9½ lengths behind the re-opposing Victtorino, who was receiving 12 lbs that day. The selection is 8 lbs better off this time around and is more than twice the price at the time of writing. He was narrowly beaten when second over C&D in February when rated 153. He subsequently disappointed when pulled up in his final couple of starts last season. He has had wind surgery since and shaped with some promise when fourth over 3m1f at Wincanton last month. He was well beaten and did weaken late on, but he would have been in need of that run, having had 196 days off. With the handicapper dropping him further to a mark of 150 for this race, it would not be a shock to see him bounce back to better form, having not finished out of the frame in three starts at this track, all over C&D.

The youngest in the field, the five-year-old HONESTY POLICY, makes his seasonal reappearance in what is only his fifth start under rules. Three times a winner over hurdles, this gelding won the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle (2m4f, Good) at Aintree last season before ending the season a half-length second to the 150-rated Jasmin De Vaux at Punchestown (3m, Yielding). Despite getting caught late on, he saw out the 3-mile trip strongly enough, and he has form on soft ground, suggesting conditions today will be of no issue. The yard is in good form with 9 winners and 6 placed from 38 runners over hurdles in the past 14 days (Strike Rate: 23.68%. Level-stakes profit: +5.52). The top-rated in this race is 156, with the selection rated 145, but on his first season out of novice company he could prove much better than that, and it would be no surprise to see him prove too good against these older rivals.

At the age of 8, GENERAL MEDRANO has 23 runs under his belt, winning 4 times, with 3 of those coming over fences. It’s six runs since his last win, which came off a mark of 131. He ran well to start this year, finishing second in a 2m handicap off a mark of 141. He steps up to 2m3f today, which looks ideal, having run on well when fourth over 2m1f last month on his only previous start at this track. The more testing ground today should also work in his favour, and the handicapper is relenting, giving him a mark of 136 today. He’s a horse who likes to be held up early, and the rare booking of Sean Bowen is a major positive in that regard. There’s every chance this one will be able to pounce late to claim the spoils today.

With only seven career starts, MOUNT GAY RUN is a lightly raced seven-year-old who enters handicap company for the first time today. Winless to date, he made an encouraging start on debut for this yard when second in a maiden hurdle at Southwell (2m, soft) to a horse that later confirmed the form by winning next time out. The significant drop back in trip that day didn’t look ideal, but he kept on well to the line. Having raced over 2m7f on his final start for his previous yard, this looks much better suited. Today’s mark of 113 looks potentially lenient, and he looks a real threat on handicap debut.

On official ratings, James du Berlais sets the standard with a rating of 160. However, he managed only third in this race last year, having raced too keenly early on. That’s a concern, as he is a horse who likes cover and is not best suited by such a small field. Furthermore, he disappointed on his season reappearance when 55 lengths back in sixth in the Grade 1 John Durkan at Punchestown (2m 3f, soft to heavy, heavy in places) last month. Second in the ratings is FIREFOX, who comes here having won a Grade 2 (2m 4f, good) at Down Royal on his first start this season. He saw the race out well that day, and he looks like he will benefit from the more testing conditions today. This 7-year-old is a solid Grade 1 horse, so this drop in class makes him a very appealing proposition. He’s on an upward trajectory as a second-season chaser and looks the sort who will end the season on a higher mark than his current one of 154.

The standard is set by the 128-rated KRIPTICJIM, who got off the mark over hurdles at the second time of asking last time out. He travelled into the race well that day and saw out the 2m3f trip strongly to win by 3¼ lengths, suggesting that today’s slightly longer distance will only further enhance his chances. That was only a four-runner affair, but he beat a 128-rated horse that day, and those lining up in this race will have to improve considerably on their previous efforts to be able to surpass that sort of level. He has the penalty to carry today, but he looks the sort who will prove a class above these, and he makes for a strong selection.

For all that it was a weak race last time, MANGANESE ran down a 1/4 favourite to win by two lengths. That came after she was nearly taken out of the race by a loose horse early on. She was intending to set the pace that day, and for a first-time starter over hurdles she showed an excellent attitude. That effort came on ground described as soft (heavy in places). Today's ground will not be as testing, but she shouldn't be inconvenienced by that. She is the only filly in the race and will have to contend with a penalty for that win last time out, but it would be no surprise to see her prove too strong for her male counterparts here. She is very appealing at the current price.

THANH NAM has been admirably consistent over the past four months. His last start at this track was over 7f back in October when he finished fourth of nine. He had a rating of 49 that day but has since put in three solid runs at this level, finishing second twice before landing his first win last time out over the mile at Chelmsford. He raced off a mark of 51 that day and, whilst he has to carry top weight today with 4 lb extra on his back, he looks the sort who can improve past his current mark. He likes to be ridden prominently and should be able to get a good position from stall 5. There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of pace in this race, which should suit this colt who has shown speed over shorter trips. This is a very low-level affair and plenty of these will have to improve markedly on recent form to make any meaningful impression. Whilst the level of form is not hugely impressive, the selection is proven at this level and he sets a good standard for this opposition.

AL QAYSIYYA was an eye-catcher when second on an odds-on favourite over 7f at Kempton last time. She was away quickly and travelled into the race well, looking a much-improved sort from her first two career starts. This Godolphin-owned two-year-old is a daughter of Dubawi out of a daughter of Lope de Vega, and so she can be expected to be winning a Class 5 novice race like this. As is often the case in this company, there are potential improvers who could spring a surprise, but the selection sets a strong standard for this level and she warrants the respect she gets from the market.

ANGEL GABRIEL has finished second on both starts to date. His first run came over this trip on the turf at Doncaster, where the ground was heavy. This two-year-old was clearly learning on the job that day, having been slow out of the gates but made a good impression when finishing well. He was subsequently sent off a 4/7f last time when switching to the all-weather at Southwell. This son of Mehmas was away much better that day but was no match for the winner, who won by an impressive five lengths. He looked more comfortable on a sounder surface last time and can be expected to act well on the Polytrack. While he failed to land the short odds last time out, he was well supported, and so it would be no surprise to see him repay those who wish to remain loyal and follow him in again today.

It took Corniche Girl six starts to get off the mark, and she has failed to win in four starts since. Whilst far from prolific, she finds herself in a very weak-looking Class 6 nursery and, off the back of a good effort in Class 5 company, she should prove tough to beat. She was fourth of seven when racing over 5f here last time but was only beaten by 1¼ lengths. The second and third that day went on to win next time out. The time before that she was second over this trip at Chelmsford, and that form looks particularly good for this level, with the third, fourth and sixth that day all having won since. She was slowly away last time over the shorter trip. She is drawn widest of all today, but that shouldn’t be a major issue with the race appearing to have plenty of pace in it. She will have more time to settle today, and with a strong early gallop expected, this looks like a race well suited to her running style.
