With 3 defeats in his last 10 fights, Sam Eggington (35 (20KO’s) ??" 9 (2KO’s) ??" 0) is clearly showing indications of a decline. At 31 years of age, the former British and Commonwealth champion looks vulnerable, particularly as punch evasion has never been his strong asset. LEE CUTLER (15 (7KO’s) ??" 1 (1KO) ??" 0) has gone on an 8-fight win streak since his sole career defeat to Bradley Rea. The 29-year-old put in an arguably career-best performance when beating Stephen McKenna on points last time out. He was a big underdog in that fight but took control of the fight early on with a 1st round knockdown and secured a further knockdown in the 7th. Confidence should be high off the back of that win, and with Eggington being an easy target to hit, there looks like a touch of inevitability about this fight. Cutler is expected to come out on top.

Joe Joyce has looked exposed in his last couple of fights, and that seemingly impregnable chin has let him down. However, I am surprised to see him as such a big underdog in this fight. Filip Hrgovic showed a lack of endurance when falling apart in the second half of the fight against Daniel Dubois. If Joyce can get through the first six rounds of this fight, which I would expect him to do, his far superior engine makes him odds-on to win the second half of the fight. He is therefore very big value in my opinion.

Only L’eau Du Sud is rated higher than KALIF DU BERLAIS in this race. The selection is rated 152, and whilst he has to find 4lbs with the aforementioned rival on official ratings, he comes here fresh having not raced at the Cheltenham Festival. He was last seen at the beginning of February when a tailed off last of four in a Grade 1 over 2m4f at Sandown. He weakened considerably after jumping the penultimate fence that day. The drop back to two miles should see him in a much better light having won twice over this trip, albeit in novice handicap company. The quicker ground is also a positive and he may also be allowed to lead. If that is the case, his chances are markedly improved; particularly under the steering of Harry Cobden who showed his front-running abilities once more when winning in these colours yesterday. A career best is needed to win this but he is a rapidly improving five year-old and he deserves his place in this company.

STUMPTOWN is potentially well treated by getting to race off the same mark (157) as when winning the 3m5f Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last month. That was his fourth consecutive victory, with three of those victories coming over a cross-country course. He can get low at some of his fences which is a slight concern ahead of this race, but he is proven in the stamina department and he shows plenty of tenacity at the finish. This will be his first trip to this track and so it’s an unknown how he will handle the occasion. However, he is proven at the big festivals and provided he gets a clear round, he will be a major player at the finish.

Rated 153, KITZBUHEL could prove to be a big danger as the least exposed in this field. This five-year-old has won on both starts for this yard, with both of those victories coming over two miles. He takes a considerable step up in distance today, and he will face much quicker ground than he did the last day. However, he did win on good to yielding at the start of the season and so there shouldn’t be any major concern in that department. He enters Grade 1 company for the first time today, and so this will clearly demand more from him. However, the yard has spoken highly of him, and the jockey/trainer combination is a major positive. Likely to go well.

His previous two wins have come over distances beyond three miles, with one of those victories being this race back in 2021. The ground was described as similar to today’s, and so there should be no concerns in that regard. He has always been a lightly raced sort, and so there could be a concern that this race may have come too soon for him now that he is eleven years of age. Regardless, he has shown a good level of form this season and has the ability to be competitive in this company.

With an official rating of 148, LULAMBA sets a clear standard in this field. The four-year-old gelding comes here on the back of an excellent effort in the Triumph Hurdle (2m1f) at the Cheltenham Festival, when beaten a neck. He saw out the race very strongly that day, and he doesn’t look the sort to be inconvenienced by the step up to 2m4f today. With only three career runs, he is one of the most unexposed sorts in this race. There is a chance that his efforts at the Cheltenham Festival have left their mark, but this is a weaker contest, and the noises coming out of the yard are very positive. The one to beat.

On his only previous run at this track, BO ZENITH finished a short head second in a 2m1f Grade 1 juvenile hurdle on good to soft ground. That was his final run for that yard before moving to Nicky Henderson’s. He is yet to win in handicap company for this stable, but all three runs have been at distances below 2m4f. The step up to three miles today should suit, having disappointed as a favourite in the two-mile Imperial Cup at Sandown when last seen. The cheekpieces go on for the first time today, and an official rating of 136 may underestimate his ability over this much longer trip. At the time of writing, the ground is described as good to soft (good in places). However, it has been drying out, and there is no rain forecast. That is a slight concern, as he does appear to prefer softer ground. If he is not taken off his feet early and finds himself close enough turning in, he will be a big threat as he is a strong finisher.

With an official rating of 126, RATH GAUL HILL will be racing off bottom weight today. The seven year old has seen his mark over fences rise from 107 in March of 2024, following three consecutive victories. All three of those wins have come in Class 3 company and he is 3lbs out of the handicap today but his form does hold up well having beaten Ballybreeze by eight and a half lengths last time out, a horse who subsequently won on his next outing. The attitude of this seven year old is a real positive having shown an ability to fight it out at the business end of races. Not running at the Cheltenham Festival could be an advantage for those in this three-mile race. GAELIC WARRIOR is one of those, having last been seen finishing third in a Grade 1 at the beginning of February. He finished behind Marine Nationale (2nd) and Solness (1st) that day, two horses that finished first and fourth respectively in the two-mile Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last month. The selection makes a significant step up in trip today, having only once previously raced at three miles. That sole previous effort over this distance came over hurdles when winning a Grade 1 by ten lengths. He is a three-time Grade 1 winner, with two of those coming over the bigger obstacles. Having gone off as favourite on both starts this season, those two efforts have been disappointing. However, the step up in trip today should see him in a better light, and the market is offering up a potentially generous price.

Puturhandstogether

Daily Racing

With an official rating of 143, PUTURHANDSTOGETHER sets a clear standard in this race. He proved his mark of 130 was all wrong when running out a comfortable winner of a Class 1 juvenile handicap over two miles at the Cheltenham Festival this year. This Joseph O'Brien-trained gelding won once in seven starts on the flat. This is his first visit to this track but the sharp nature of the course should suit this four year old who has a good turn of foot. The obvious choice on official ratings.
13:45 1:45 Aintree

Impaire Et Passe

Daily Racing

Rated as high as 161 over hurdles, Impaire Et Passe is two from three over fences this season. He won his first two starts over the bigger obstacles at the back end of last year but was beaten by both Ballyburn and the re-opposing Croke Park when third at Leopardstown last time out. That is a concern, with Ballyburn having disappointed at the Cheltenham Festival last month. However, the selection was let down by his jumping last time out and he did win on his only previous visit to this track, when showing plenty of desire to beat Bob Ollinger and Langer Dan in a photo-finish in the Aintree Hurdle twelve months ago. This seven-year-old is a four-time Grade 1 winner and retains enough class to think that he can deliver the trainer’s second consecutive winner in this race with the headgear going on for the first time today.
