With only two starts, SABER STRIKE is the least experienced in the field. This colt won on debut over 6f as a two-year-old before stepping up to Listed company last month over this trip on Good to Firm ground. That run came after a near six-month absence; therefore he can be expected to have come on for that run. He is rated 108 but is very unexposed on his first foray into Group company and could prove to be much better than that mark. The yard have hit a good vein of form with 12 winners from 50 runners over the past 14 days (strike rate: 24%) and a further 14 placed, yielding a level-stakes profit of +0.42. The trainer and jockey teamed up to land a winner on Day 2 of this festival and appear to have leading claims here.

Throughout this festival, there has been clear evidence of a track bias on the straight course, with those drawn high having a distinct advantage. It’s therefore surprising to see that, at the time of writing, three (Joliestar, Lake Forest & Overpass) of the first four in the betting are drawn 7 or lower, and the favourite (Joliestar) is drawn in stall 1. SATONO REVE is the one of those four who is drawn high (18) and will have only one runner outside of him coming out of the gates. He is also joint top-rated with a mark of 119, and with Ryan Moore on board this runner appears to have standout claims. A Japanese-trained horse, his only previous visit to these shores was to this meeting last year when he finished ½ length second behind Lazzat in this race (Good to Firm) and was a further three lengths clear of the third. He was drawn in the widest gate of all that day on similar ground to what he will encounter today. He’s proven to handle the track and can be expected to put up another bold bid.

The American-trained sprinters are generally of a better quality than was evident with the Wesley Ward-trained Bacio winning a Class 2 handicap by 3¼ over this track and trip yesterday. The winner was drawn the highest of the field in stall 31, and the third, fifth and sixth were drawn 28, 30 and 29 respectively. That is further evidence of the draw bias over the straight course at this meeting. It has proven to be very difficult to win from the far side and focus is therefore on those drawn higher with highest gate in this race being 21. THROUGH THE YEARS is drawn in 15 and has shown plenty of early speed in her two starts to date. She is one of three Wesley Ward-trained runners in this field and is a daughter of No Nay Never, who won this race back in 2013. Ez Tina is the shortest-priced of the three Ward runners but is drawn in stall 3, which is far from ideal. The selection is next in the betting and looks much better placed to use that speed. She may prove to be much better than her European counterparts.

The HURRICANES ended the league phase of the season four points clear of second-placed Chiefs, winning eleven of their fourteen games. Both sides have made light work of their two play-off games thus far, with the Hurricanes winning by an average of 45 points and the Chiefs winning by an average of 30 points. Both have looked impressive, and the Chiefs did secure an overtime win against the Hurricanes in their most recent meeting. However, the Chiefs were at home that day, and with this final being played at the Hnry Stadium, the home of the Hurricanes, this looks likely to be a different result.

Both sides come into this play-off final on the back of a dominant semi-final win. The Chiefs were 49-12 winners over the Crusaders, a game in which the handicap had the Chiefs around -4.5 point favourites. Meanwhile, the HURRICANES were 57-12 winners over the Blues. They were fully expected to dominate, having been priced around -17.5 as favourites. Three of the five most recent meetings between the two sides have been won by the Hurricanes, by an average margin of 11 points. They topped the table in the regular season, winning eleven of their fourteen games, finishing four points clear of the Chiefs. That form can be expected to be confirmed in this game, and while the handicap is currently less than a converted try, the value appears to be with the favourites.

Both of these teams started their World Cup campaign with defeat. Turkiye lost 2-0 to Australia and PARAGUAY lost 4-1 to the USA. Turkey were odds-on favourites to win their opening game and created more chances than their opponents, had more shots on target, and ended the game with a greater expected goals. In contrast, Paraguay were underdogs against the USA in what was always expected to be a difficult opener for them against a team playing at home. They only had one shot on target in that game and created very little in the way of goalscoring opportunities. However, that performance was a contrast to their form coming into this tournament, as they had scored in seven of their eight previous games prior to the game against the USA. Paraguay can be expected to pose much more of a threat in this game, and with the handicap giving them a 0.5 goal start, they make for an appealing option.

It was a disappointing start to the campaign for both teams, with Haiti losing 1-0 to Scotland and Brazil being held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco. Two games where the goal total was under 2.5 goals. However, this should be a much easier test for Brazil, who are ranked 77 places higher than Haiti in the FIFA ranking. Furthermore, four of the previous five games that Brazil have played resulted in over 2.5 goals. The five-time champions are likely to create many goal-scoring opportunities in this game and will be keen to secure a dominant win and boost their confidence. The market is very much favouring over 2.5 goals, and it does look like a solid option.

BRAZIL were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco, having conceded first in that game. Morocco recorded more shots than Brazil in that match and ended with a higher expected goals value. However, the two teams were closely ranked in the FIFA rankings, and Morocco had beaten Brazil in their previous encounter. This game against Haiti, who are ranked 83, should prove to be a much easier task, and previous encounters between the teams suggest that. The most recent meeting between these two teams resulted in a 7-1 win for Brazil. Haiti have managed to win only once in their previous five games, losing three times, including a 1-0 defeat to Scotland in their opening game of this World Cup campaign. Brazil were anything but convincing in their opening game and will need to improve greatly if they are to win this tournament. This game should present an opportunity to boost their confidence and secure a dominant win.
