He put any doubts to bed by winning the Welsh Grand National by three lengths off a career-high mark of 154 next time out. He is currently rated 159 and, back in graded company, looks the one to beat. Today’s trip is on the shorter side for his liking, but the very testing ground will suit him well. Despite the small field, this is likely to be a strongly run race, and he has no issues with dictating terms on the front end. Since joining the Adrian Keatley yard, AISLING OSCAR has improved significantly, rising from a mark of 46 to his current mark of 71. That rise has come along with seven consecutive wins, all of which have come at Newcastle, three of which have been over today’s trip (8f). His latest win came off a 6 lb lower mark when winning by a half-length over seven furlongs. The change of venue is a slight concern, but this five-year-old is thriving at the moment, and he looks like he has further improvement in him. He does have a tendency to race keenly in his races, but drawn in stall two today and with plenty of pace outside him, he should be able to get some cover. The handicapper has yet to get to grips with this gelding, and that rating may have to go up again after this one. (NB).
