On official ratings, Constitution Hill is 11 lbs clear of his nearest rival. However, his previous three efforts have resulted in form figures of FF5. Particularly on the back of his most recent run, it takes a forgiving sort to want to keep the faith in this horse. It may well be the case that he has lost his confidence, lost the love for the game, or quite possibly both. The petrol tank emptied rapidly last time out. However, I have a feeling that the race in Punchestown was an afterthought and, with hindsight, he would have been better off put away for the summer after his fall at Aintree. The yard is very bullish about his chances first time out this season. Whilst he will not need to be at his all-time best to win this, he will need to be fit and ready to go. I would expect that Nicky Henderson has him in excellent shape. Only twice in his 13-race career has the horse gone off at a price above evens. If he is anywhere near being back to his old self, you are getting odds-against about an odds-on shot. He has my vote.

At eight years of age, DUKE OF DECEPTION has had somewhat of a revival this year. Having been pulled up on his first start of 2025, his form figures since read 2211. Furthermore, his form figures from three career starts at this track read 121. He won off a career high mark of 127 over 3m2f at Kelso (Good, Good to Soft in places) back in October. That came off a 189-day break. A 3lb rise for that victory doesn’t look overly harsh. He saw out the race strongly that day despite making plenty of jumping errors. If he can clean up his jumping, today’s mark of 130 will look lenient. His six career victories have come on ground ranging from Good to that with Heavy in the description, and so he is versatile with regards to the ground. Another aggressive ride is likely to be the order of the day for this runner and he makes for plenty of appeal here.

On the back of an excellent second at Cheltenham (2m3f, Good to Soft) off a mark of 129 last month, NAVAJO INDY looks nicely handicapped now significantly stepped up in trip. He gets an official mark of 132 for today, but looks the sort who can improve past that mark. He was to the fore throughout the race last time but was picked off by a speedier sort. He stayed on at one pace to the line, suggesting that he will be seen to better effect over further, especially now he has that first run of the season out of the way. He is a smooth traveller and economical jumper, which should hold him in good stead for today. The ground is no concern, having acted well on similar going in the past. The trainer has been in fine form of late with four winners from eight runners in the past 14 days (LSP: +9.83). He holds solid claims with this runner.

In an otherwise open-looking handicap, SNIPE makes plenty of appeal. This eight-year-old gelding has had twelve starts in handicap company since his previous win on Boxing Day 2023. He has been placed four times since and comes here on the back of a respectable fourth in the three-mile Sodexo Handicap Chase (Good) at this track at the beginning of this month. He didn’t get the smoothest of trips that day and was outpaced turning for home. However, he stayed on well, and he gave a strong impression that the step back up in trip today will suit. That run came off a mark of 124, and he has been dropped 1lb ahead of today’s effort with the 3lb claiming Tristan Durrell aboard once again. Trainer Dan Skelton has been in superb form of late, and he looks to have a good chance here.

The tactics are clear for THE FOUR SIXES. Get out in front and hold them off. He has managed that on each of his last three starts, landing the hat-trick in a 2-runner race on his first start over fences last time. He was fully expected to beat his sole rival that day and did so comfortably off a mark of 144, but with some low efforts at the fences, he looks much better suited by the return to hurdles today. He remains on that same mark, which is 7lbs higher than his previous career-high over hurdles. At seven years of age, he remains a progressive-looking sort and will be well-suited by condition. All bar one of his five career victories have come on left-handed tracks; he acts well on the ground, and he is likely to get an uncontested lead. He carries top weight but sets a good standard and will likely be tough to pass.

ROCKOLA VOGUE put in a very encouraging effort on reappearance when winning a handicap (Bangor, Good) over 2m4f off a mark of 115 last time out. That was off the back of a 198-day absence, and so there should be further improvement seen today. The handicapper has given him a mark of 121 for today, which looks workable now stepping back up in trip to 3 miles. His only previous effort over this trip saw him finish fourth off a mark of 115 at Ayr. That was his final effort of last season, and whilst by no means disgraced, he may well have needed a break. He looked all the better for that break when winning last time out, and it would be no surprise to see this progressive six-year-old get to these late on.

A very impressive winner of a novice hurdle (2m, Good) at Chepstow last month, MASKED MAN sets a very strong standard today. This four-year-old gelding is well related, being a half-brother to three winners. He was a winner on debut in a 3-mile point-to-point earlier this year and set out to make it a true test when leading from flag fall on debut under rules last time. He set respectable early fractions that last time out and showed an excellent turn of foot when asked to quicken clear and win by 12 lengths. The second that day (Blue Carpet) won a three-runner 2m4f maiden hurdle next time out. Today’s selection stays much further than this, and he is very much a chaser in the making. I would expect him to be ridden aggressively, and a good round of hurdling should make him very tough to beat.
