The number one seed and defending champion Judd Trump starts his defence of the title after what has been an inauspicious start to the season by his very high standards. He is yet to pick up any silverware this season but has reached the final of the Northern Ireland Open and the Champion of Champions last month. He had been experimenting with a new cue, which ultimately proved to be a failure. Back with a more familiar piece of equipment, he can be expected to return to better form. Trump has an excellent record against Si Jiahui, having beaten him in seven of their eight previous meetings. Si Jiahui has had the benefit of playing a match in the main arena, picking up a 6-0 win over Ryan Day. This should be a much tougher test and one that Trump should come out on top in.

Each of these three runners won on their first start over hurdles. However, of these three, MYDADDYPADDY made by far the biggest impression. A facile winner over 2 miles at Carlisle (soft), this son of Walk In The Park looks the sort who will make his mark in much better company than this. He is indeed the ante-post favourite for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March. The horse (Harbour Island) he beat into second the last day disappointed next time out, but the third (Atlantic Lad) was a winner of a maiden hurdle at Bangor. The Skelton yard have hit the ground running this season, and they appear to have a very classy sort on their hands here. The odds are short enough but very much justifiable on form.

Kamilla Rakhimova is the higher-ranked player and the more experienced player of the two. She was very impressive in her first-round match, beating Alina Korneeva 6-1, 6-1. That was her first indoor match of the season. Linda Klimovicova has won more matches of late, but the majority of those have come at ITF level. This is a step up in quality for her, and the experience of Rakhimova at this level should give her the edge.

The market appears to have got this right and Korpatsch is very much favoured here.

I am a little surprised to see Dominika Salkova priced up as the underdog in this match. Ranked 140 in the world, she is much higher ranked than her opponent, who is also far less experienced. Salkova has played only five indoor matches this season but has won four of those. Salkova recently reached the semifinals in Jiujiang, losing (6-4, 6-4) to the eventual winner Anna Blinkova. Salkova has been operating at a higher level than her opponent, who, whilst picking up some respectable wins, has done so at ITF level. It would not be a surprise to see Vandromme win this match, but I would have made her the underdog in this encounter. On the basis of value, I am therefore siding with Salkova.

Excluding the Snooker Shoot-Out, Kyren Wilson and ELLIOT SLESSOR have met twice in ranking events. Their first meeting was back in 2023, where Kyren Wilson won 6-2 in what turned out to be his World Championship-winning season. Their most recent meeting was in the 2024 British Open; Slessor came out on top that day, winning 4-2. Slessor has the higher win percentage this season (69% vs. 65%), winning 20 of his 29 matches. Slessor comes into this as a qualifier, where he won his two matches 6-5 (vs. Bence Rózsa Revesz) and 6-4 (vs. Zak Surety) respectively. Wilson comes here on the back of a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Neil Robertson in the Riyadh Snooker Championship. Whilst this looks like an easier test on paper, I would be concerned by the form of Wilson. With Slessor coming into this match sharpened by a couple of qualifying matches, the underdog makes far more appeal at the prices.

In what is a low-level affair, Aisling Oscar looks capable of taking another step forward on his third start for this yard. His highest winning mark is only 51, and that came back in February 2024. However, the new yard has seemingly sparked this gelding to life, and having shown encouraging signs on debut for Adrian Keatley, he made light work of a mark of 46 over 7f (Tapeta) last time. Held up out the back early doors, he looked the winner a long way out and hit the front on the bridle to win with ease. That win came last Thursday, and so he is turned out quickly to race off what now looks a very lenient mark. He steps back up in trip today, which is of no concern. It would be no surprise to see this runner go off odds-on.

Jessika Ponchet is the younger player, and her ranking has risen significantly since then. She is now ranked 167 in the world, 58 places higher than Barthel. Both players have been operating at ITF level in recent weeks, with Ponchet getting the better results, having reached the semifinals in Trnava. There isn’t a great deal to separate these two players on form, but Ponchet is the improving player, and with the current odds set at evens, she is a much more appealing price than her opponent.

6 lbs clear on official ratings, HOLLOWAY BOY sets a strong standard for this Listed race. This five-year-old made his reappearance in a 20-runner 1-mile handicap at Ascot in October. He dead-heated for second with the re-opposing Ebts Guard that day, but is 8 lbs better off with that rival today. With only two wins from 21 starts, he is by no means a prolific winner, but those two wins have come in the Chesham Stakes (Listed) and, more recently, a Group 3 over this trip. With a further nine placed finishes to his name, he is a model of consistency. He finished sixth in this race 12 months ago, but was having to carry a penalty and give weight to all his rivals. That is not the case today, and he can be expected to prove very tough to beat.

These two players have met five times in ranking events. Ding Junhui holds the advantage in the head-to-head with three wins. Their most recent meeting was won by XU SI. He was a 4-3 winner that day. Coming into this week, the Denver Broncos (9-2-0) are second in the AFC and make the long trip to the struggling Washington Commanders, who are 3-8-0 this season and have only the Saints and the Giants below them in the NFC. The Commanders are likely to be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels once more due to an elbow injury ??" yet more frustration for an already struggling offence. On defence, the Commanders have given up the most passing yards per attempt this season (8.9) and are also yielding an average of 249.5 passing yards per game. That is a major concern for the hosts with Broncos quarterback Bo Nix getting success out of Troy Franklin at wide receiver. Franklin is top of the Broncos' receiving touchdown list with five, four of which have come in the last four weeks. On defence, the Broncos are also looking solid. They have limited opponents to only 3.6 yards per carry against the run this season, the best in the NFL. The form book very much points to an away win, and the price offered here looks very fair.

On official ratings, Constitution Hill is 11 lbs clear of his nearest rival. However, his previous three efforts have resulted in form figures of FF5. Particularly on the back of his most recent run, it takes a forgiving sort to want to keep the faith in this horse. It may well be the case that he has lost his confidence, lost the love for the game, or quite possibly both. The petrol tank emptied rapidly last time out. However, I have a feeling that the race in Punchestown was an afterthought and, with hindsight, he would have been better off put away for the summer after his fall at Aintree. The yard is very bullish about his chances first time out this season. Whilst he will not need to be at his all-time best to win this, he will need to be fit and ready to go. I would expect that Nicky Henderson has him in excellent shape. Only twice in his 13-race career has the horse gone off at a price above evens. If he is anywhere near being back to his old self, you are getting odds-against about an odds-on shot. He has my vote.
