Based on world rankings, Higgins has had the tougher opponents to get to this stage, beating Ali Carter (10-7), Ronnie O’Sullivan (13-12), and Neil Robertson (13-10). However, Murphy beat Zhao Xintong (13-10), the defending champion and pre-tournament favourite, in the previous round. Higgins has started slowly in his previous two matches, trailing after the first two sessions. Matches extend to a best of thirty-three at this stage, which gives players longer to settle, but the Scotsman could find himself chasing once again, and Murphy’s relentless scoring can keep players at bay. As seen with Mark Williams going deep in this tournament last year, age is a factor, and fatigue is likely to play its part in these long-session matches. With that in mind, Murphy looks better placed to take advantage and book his place in the final.
