05:30 Laura Siegemund vs Liudmila Samsonova

Laura Siegemund

Samsonova is ranked 18 in the world but has never made it past the 2nd round in Melbourne in seven previous attempts. Siegemund has won the last two meetings as well, the last two on hard courts, the latest in Adelaide. But they've not met for two years, which has to be taken into consideration. Samsonova lost to Vondroušová, ranked 34 in the world, in Adelaide last week. The concern for Siegemund is she failed to finish the match against Zvonareva last week, so fitness levels have to be taken on trust. I just feel at these odds it's worth a small risk. She's made the 3rd round here twice in the last three years.
00:00 Panna Udvardy vs Katerina Siniakova

Siniakova is a very short-odds favourite, considering she has exited in the first round in 9 of her 12 appearances here in Melbourne. Udvardy tends to show her best form on clay; however, she won 17 of her 24 hard-court matches last season. Despite two defeats so far in 2026, she looks worth a small interest solely based on Siniakova's record here.

The world number 14, Tauson, usually negotiates the first round here in Melbourne, but she arrives on the back of four straight defeats in the build-up, including a last-time retirement. Galfi is ranked 93, so has plenty on her hands, but she at least has some recent wins under her belt, negotiating two qualifying rounds in Adelaide last week and beating a better-ranked player (Krueger, 61). The fact she is less than 2/1 here to beat a top-16 player shows an upset would not be a huge one.

02:00 Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Zeynep Sonmez

Zeynep Sonmez

This looks a potential banana skin for world No. 11 Alexandrova. She's exited in the first round here in three of the last four seasons and arrives with back-to-back defeats against lower-ranked players. Sonmez is No. 112 in the world, so there's a huge gulf in the rankings, but she's come through qualifying without dropping more than three games per set. She looks a sporting bet for the upset. It's a shame her odds are not bigger; they too though reflect the potential tricky game for Alexandrova.
