At the price, Rory is worth a small each-way bet. He's notoriously inconsistent but does possess some ability, which he has shown on occasion in the last few months. This is undoubtedly his best trip. He's got a good draw, and Lauren Young claims five pounds. If he were to magically run to his best, he would win, but we can't rely on that.

I can raise queries about all of these, which makes finding the winner difficult. Country Mile has shown a liking for Cheltenham already, having won a hurdle at the track and been placed over fences at the October meeting. Had he not made a mistake at a crucial moment, he might have finished closer or won. Hopefully there will be no mistakes this time.

If Hoe Joly Smoke can travel as well as he did in a longer race here in October, he could go very close. He ran well here last time as well in the Paddy Power over today's trip. He didn't jump as well that day but looks well treated against the horse that finished ahead of him that day. The Skeltons continue in fine form and may claim another big pot.

Spadestep jumped like an old hand on his chasing debut at Aintree last time, only to be run out of it by Jordan's Cross after the last. This looks a weaker race than that last one, and if he jumps as well again he should be good enough to put the opposition to the sword. He led from the off at Aintree, but that won't necessarily be the case here.

Matata has plenty of weight in this handicap, but that's down to the level of form he's shown in the last 18 months. Anthony Honeyball has his team in good form and brings Jasmin De Grugy back to the track after his summer break. Although well beaten by Bill Baxter at Punchestown, that was a good run in that Listed Handicap. He showed progression throughout the season, and I can't see any reason why that won't continue.

This is a truly fascinating renewal of the Fighting Fifth with a genuine top-notch performer in Constitution Hill in the line-up against two very promising youngsters in opposition. The way Constitution Hill guessed at hurdles at Cheltenham and Aintree in the spring makes me very wary of backing him. Willie Mullins must have a very high opinion of Anzadam to pitch him in here, a tried-and-tested Champion Hurdle trial. Here's another example of how British racing has great ideas and then spoils them. The veteran chases are very popular, down entirely to the old boys who race in them. However, there are now too many of them, which has led to smaller fields and less competitive races. That said, I think Torn And Frayed looks to have a great shout, given the form of his last two runs. He's only been upped four pounds since his Aintree win, and that might not be enough to stop him following up.
