Classic Encountered ran a fair race in the Spring Mile at Doncaster, which should have set him up nicely for this. He didn't have the best of draws at Doncaster, so that run could be marked up a little. He has shown a liking for the Rowley Mile on his previous visits, and that also gives some confidence in his chances this time.

Tom Lacey is a trainer who wouldn't send a horse all the way to Ireland if he didn't think it had a better-than-average chance. Montregard has been thwarted by very quick ground recently on this side of the Irish Sea, but shouldn't have that problem this time around. He has very strong form going right-handed, particularly at Ascot, so Punchestown should be to his liking. He's a fast-improving seven-year-old who has much more to offer, I believe.

The ground at Newmarket seemed to be quite quick on Friday, and that is certainly a positive for the chances of Frost At Dawn in the Palace House. He's not been the most prolific winner, but his great efforts in the King Charles III at Royal Ascot and the Nunthorpe at York, both Group Ones, give me hope that he can take this Group 3 on his preferred ground.

Mirsky was at his best in the early part of 2025 and shaped well on his seasonal debut at Musselburgh in their first Sunday Series fixtures. The O'Meara horses have seemed to improve markedly from their first runs, so I expect Mirsky to be competitive here. The handicapper dropped him a pound for that Musselburgh run, and every little helps, as they say.

I felt that Tamam Star was a little unlucky at Musselburgh on Sunday, as he didn't get any luck in running. He looked to me plenty sharp enough on his debut and well capable of winning at the minimum trip. He reappears quickly, and, as long as there are no ill effects from his debut, he must be the one to beat. I doubt Karl Burke would run him if he had any doubts.

It's less than a year since Lion's House won off a mark of 78, minus five with the apprentice's claim. He races here off 69, so there are possibilities if he is on a going day. This race is run in memory of Tommie Jakes, who rode a lot for Lion's House's trainer, Linda Perratt, and I think she would love to win this particular race. Jakes was the claimer who did the steering on the selection in the Southwell race mentioned already. This would be a very poignant and appropriate winner.

Nicky Henderson hasn't had a winner at this meeting so far, but he has a chance with Noble Park. This one has looked much better as a chaser than a hurdler and is lightly raced, so improvement looks assured. He's also avoided the other spring festivals, so he arrives here fresher than most. At 18/1 an each-way bet could reap a reward.

Lady Roxby improved throughout 2025, and there's no reason why she can't maintain that in 2026. She ran a quite encouraging race on seasonal debut at Kempton, which should have her cherry ripe for this. Michael Herrington is a very underrated trainer who is currently in good form.

Here's a very tough-looking sprint handicap, just what we like. Rosario is two pounds lower than when he won this race last year and has shown a liking for the track on other occasions. He put up plenty of good performances last year, including a very good third in the Portland at Doncaster. He did spoil his chances a couple of times with poor starts, so we need to hope that doesn't happen. All in all, I think he should go close.

Majborough is a hugely talented racehorse who unfortunately comes with a warning, as he can make the odd howler during a race. He won his only race here, jumping very well on that occasion, and I think he's worth chancing.

Sing Us A Song was his own worst enemy last season, squandering his chances by being unruly in the stalls and missing the break. He was gelded prior to his final run of the year, which saw him behave much better and win. Ralph Beckett publicly stated that he held him in high regard, which leads me to think he can win races this year, starting with this historic handicap.

Nicky Henderson doesn't send that many horses to the Punchestown Festival, but he has had quite a bit of success over the years with those that have turned up there. The lightly raced Laughing John looks a bit of a plot horse in this very competitive handicap. He has only had two runs this season, and the manner of his win in the Warwick qualifier for this was very impressive. He looks sure to improve again and, with luck, can be a major player.

Here's another race where there are very few who can win. The short-price favourite may well be ahead of his mark, but I wouldn't be willing to take the odds on offer. Talismanstime won well at Hamilton before running in the Melrose at York. He completely blew out that day, which I think was due to the occasion getting to him and not allowing him to run his race. Back in calmer waters, in a much more relaxed atmosphere, he can get back to winning ways, assuming he stays the longer trip.

A lot of positives fall into place for Persuasion here. He is best on turning tracks, acts on the ground, and has landed the plum draw in stall one. Vince L'Amour hasn't won at this level before; however, there are reasons to give him a good shout on this occasion. He ran a big race at Musselburgh last time, where he wasn't best drawn, and came up against a rapidly improving sprinter in Montezuma. He has won at Ripon before, which is a huge positive, as this is very much a track that doesn't suit every horse. He's very straightforward, and Amie Waugh just needs to get him out smartly, point him in the right direction, and lead them a merry dance. He might be able to lead all the way.

I thought Strength of Spirit won with a little in hand on his seasonal debut at Musselburgh at Easter and should be able to continue his progression. He has been raised four pounds for that victory, and with Jack Nicholls able to claim five, he is effectively a pound below his winning mark from last time. This does look a more competitive race than the Musselburgh one, but Karl Burke has his horses in tremendous form at the moment.

There has been an awful lot of negative comment about this card, and this race in particular, this week, but it remains a very competitive handicap whatever the quality of the participants. Henry's Friend hasn't been the most consistent of horses, but has shown some fair form at times. He is only a pound higher here compared to his winning performance at Ascot earlier in the season. He's avoided the worst of the winter ground, which makes him one of the fresher runners in the field. He looks quite attractively priced at 25/1.

The favourite, Wolfburg, was very impressive winning the Go North final he ran in at Carlisle. However, he has come up short over this trip previously. Indeed, the trainer stated previously that he felt three miles was too far. There are question marks surrounding all of the others. Cadell hasn't been running well lately but is back near his last winning mark. He won when blinkers were first applied here earlier in the season, and the switch to the visor now might be the catalyst for a better showing.
