Bonza Boy has a good record at Exeter, especially on the decent ground he's likely to find today. He had the misfortune to come up against, last time at Wincanton, one of Venetia Williams's runners on the day her yard hit form. It was still a good run on ground that wasn't to his particular liking.

This is a tight little handicap, and my preference is for William Cody. He's run four solid races this season, including a second last time after a short break. He was well clear of the rest of the field that day, which gives hope for a good run here. Pam Sly is a trainer who always has to be respected at Wetherby, where she has had a number of nice winners over the years.

I don't know why he's been off for so long, so that is a concern. However, he may just be a class above this field, and assuming he's ready to run to his best, he may be a value bet here.

Cool Customer comes from a yard that does well in bumpers and gained valuable experience in two placed efforts in December and January. Chepstow's undulations are quite a challenge, and because Cool Customer has had those previous runs, he might handle the track better than most.

However, she had been off for a lengthy absence before reappearing a month ago in a Listed race at Warwick. She was in need of that race, and hopefully will have stepped forward since then. She is the class act in this race, and if she is anywhere near her best she should be in the shake-up.

Quite a few of these don't look up to winning a race at this level, and I think the Skelton progressive youngster, A Pai De Nom, could be the one to be with. He is shorter than I was expecting, but the bookies are treading warily where this yard is concerned. Given what he's done in his last three runs, the handicapper hasn't been as harsh as he might have been, leaving him with a great chance of collecting a big pot.

I seriously doubt that there is a tougher card in the entire season than this one. Five fields of twenty or more runners really just says it all. Winner-finding is extremely difficult, and staking should be cautious. The Triumph looks a nightmare to call, and my very tentative pick is Kai Lung, one of nine from the Willie Mullins yard. He had six runs on the Flat in France, which will have given him plenty of experience, prior to winning on his only hurdle race to date. He showed enough that day to make me think he could get in the shake-up.

This looks the most difficult handicap of the day, but I have a fairly strong feeling that Weveallbeencaught is going to run a massive race. He was trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies until last September before moving to his current Irish yard. He ran well at both the spring festivals here and at Aintree, suggesting this is his time of year. He looks like one that does enjoy better ground than that on offer in the depths of winter. He ran well in the Munster National in the autumn; a repeat of that can see him go close in this.
