There are very few runners anywhere that look worthy of having a bet on. However, the one I do fancy is Westgate Warrior in this modest sprint handicap. He's quite a lightly raced three-year-old who has started to find his feet in his last few runs. He wasn't a bad third here behind Lima Sierra, then second at Beverley, before winning quite nicely back here a fortnight ago. None of the others look to be in any kind of form, so this strikes me as a good opportunity for the selection.

Vince L'Amour is in cracking form at this late stage of the season. He all but won the very competitive five furlong handicap on the first day of the Western Meeting at Ayr. He can readily be excused his next run at Ripon as he was very badly drawn there. He then was a nice winner at Musselburgh last time, and looks good enough to follow up here.

JM Jhingree hasn't raced over six furlongs so far, however I think it's probably worth a try, especially on this sharp track. He is still only three so he may have more to offer. He certainly has shown enough on occasion to make you think he can progress a little more yet. Jim Goldie is not a stranger to having winners at big prices, and this might be another.

In the finest Tim Easterby tradition, Vince Le Prince has drifted down the ratings to a point where he must have a great chance of winning. He acts on soft ground and goes as well here as anywhere else. After running quite well in the mid part of the year, his form appeared to dip. However, he has shown a little more zest in his last two races, leading me to hope he can win this race.

Wobwobwob is another who relishes soft ground and has been running well enough of late to suggest he can win this kind of race. His back form on soft ground is even stronger than his current form, so there's every chance he can go close.

This is a very open and difficult race to fathom, and the most sensible thing would be to leave it well alone. However, I am having a little each way interest on the Gordon Elliott trained five year old, Sermandzarak. This is his first try in a handicap, but he showed when winning a maiden at the end of last season, he possesses plenty of ability. With the yard in top form he can reach the frame at least.

I'm not a huge fan of Chelmsford City but I note that Theme Park looks quite a big price, running in a lower grade race than he normally does. Some of his runs haven't been too bad this season, and, if he could run up to his previous best, he could play a hand here. He's won once and been second once from five all weather starts so he should handle this track OK. Looks a fair each way chance.

Harswell Duke

This race is full of out of form horses, so predicting the winner is very speculative to say the least. Looking at his back form, Harswell Duke stands out. Back in the day he won a Class 2 handicap at Doncaster on heavy ground. Because of his pretty lamentable form since he has sunk in the ratings to a very lowly mark. Any glimmer of that past ability brought out here could see him win at last.

Silent City has progressed quietly as the season has progressed, and she faces her toughest assignment to date here. She won a touch cosily last time and the handicapper only put her up a pound for that. She looked willing to battle that day, which is a very good sign in a filly like her. Roger Varian doesn't over face his horses which leads me to think he believes that she is well up to this level.

My old friend Rory turns up here over his best course and distance. He has dropped to a ridiculously low mark following a string of very poor performances during 2023. He returned after a break at Musselburgh last week and showed a little more promise than previous runs. He usually runs badly after a break, so maybe he is getting his mojo back. I expect he will break slowly, as is his custom, but hope he can find his old spark to finish with purpose. This is speculative, but with Rory, anything is possible.

I'm very surprised and disappointed to see Wen Moon as the favorite in this poor affair. He's been badly out of form and shown very little in 2023. I hope the main reason for the lack of form is because he has not once had his ground. He definitely prefers soft ground on turf. This is his first try on the Tapeta, so it's anyone's guess if he will handle it. If he does, he could hose up against some very poor rivals.

Legal Nymph looks a very tempting price in this sprint handicap. At this level, on easy ground, he is to be reckoned with. He had a nice summer break before winning at Doncaster in September. This is a race where every runner has question marks against them. I think Rogue Sensation might be up to winning, given she has a few bits of fair form in the book. The Crisfords have probably had their best season yet in 2023, and it could be topped nicely by taking this hugely valuable handicap. He was very impressive here last time and looks to have more improvement in him. He hasn't been over-raced so far this season, and this will almost certainly have been a target for some time. As a bonus, he has a great draw on the stands rail, which has been the place to be at Ascot on the straight course all year.

We have to believe that the Gosdens wouldn't allow Field Of Gold to run if they didn't think he was back to full fitness following his injury. He is without doubt the best three year old colt we have seen this year, and it would be fitting if he could win this major prize. Come On Over showed some promise earlier in the year when trained by Richard Fahey. I saw him at Carlisle where David Egan was heard to say he had ability and would likely win a Nursery if he didn't get his head in front in a maiden race. His impatient owner moved him to Charlie Clover, for whom he ran well here last time. He was bumped at the start, and that lit him up. He may have used more energy than was ideal, although he did finish fairly well. I think if he gets a little more luck this time he could prevail to make Egan's prediction come true.

At the end of a desperate nine race card at Lingfield comes the best bet of the day. Grace Angel was a wee bit disappointing at Southwell last time, when he looked to have a really good chance, but didn't quite deliver. He meets the winner of that race on eleven pounds better term, which must give him every chance of reversing the form. His seven pound claimer was trusted with a fancied runner from the same stable in a valuable handicap at York on Friday, and, whilst that didn't work out, the trainer must think something of him to put him up in a race of that nature.

Up The Jazz hasn't been performing particularly well this season. One exception came at Beverley, but generally, it's been disappointing.
