Spadestep

Daily Racing

50 WINNB

@2.62

Lose

-50

It's another competitive card at Perth on Friday, and hopefully the first selection can get some funds to go to war with later in the day. Spadestep looked like winning on his stable debut for Lucinda Russell at Carlisle in March, but just got run out of it in the last 100 yards. The winner has won twice since at Carlisle, so the form looks decent enough. The main danger comes from the very in-form yard of Olly Murphy. However, I would be surprised if he could concede 12 pounds to Spadestep.

This is a fiendishly difficult race. However, I have been watching out for Sunset Hill after her eye-catching third at Ayr in early March. She ran with promise that day and improved on the run at Kelso on her latest start. She is back up in trip today, which I think is very much in her favor. The yard is going very well at present, which is also in her favor.

Beyond The Verge hasn't been seen over the winter, presumably to avoid the worst of the ground ahead of a spring campaign. The yard had a poor winter so not running will have been a bonus. The Susan Corbett team have been in great form lately and very often have winners, and placed runners, at big prices. I could see this one outrunning his generous looking odds.

Karl Burke has the short-price favorite here, and there has to be a fair chance his filly will be good enough on debut. However, I think the once-raced Filly Foden might just be up to winning. She was second at Musselburgh on her first start behind what looked like a fairly smart filly of Hugo Palmer's. That experience should stand her in good stead here.

The inclusion of six from the Mullins yard just adds complications to this marathon chase. I have a feeling that he might be unsuccessful on this occasion. The Kniphand has the right profile for this race. He is just out of the novice ranks, looks steadily progressive, and put up a very good trial when finishing second in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster last time. He hasn't been over-raced, so should be fresh enough for this major challenge.

This looks like a very tough Mares Handicap to solve. The race Ruby Island won here in March has worked out exceptionally well, and it would be no surprise if one of the runners from that race took this. I quite like one not from that race in Rockola Vogue, who won a competitive race at Musselburgh last time. I think she would be suited by this longer trip, and her trainers are in great form.

Bunting was a big drifter in the market in the Coral Cup, and then duly disappointed. He ran well enough on the outside of the field for a fair way, but faded tamely before pulling up. Given some of his earlier form that race was probably too bad to be true. The shorter trip and better ground should help, and it would be no surprise to see him bet on the morning of the race given the connections.

Willie Mullins makes this card quite problematic as he fires runners into races that may not have come under consideration before his exploits at Aintree last week. Loughglynn looks like one with a genuine chance. His hurdle form is quite strong, however his jumping hasn't looked the best in his three runs over fences to date. However Ayr isn't the most demanding chase course in the country which may aid his chances.

The owners are particularly keen on this meeting given their Scottish roots, and will be keen for The Four Sixes to go one better than he did in last year's renewal. Paul Nicholls has been in good form this week at Aintree and can top it off by winning the National. He is ideally suited by good ground and comes into the race a relatively fresh horse. He was a good winner of the big Newbury handicap at the end of November and was given a sighter over a trip shorter than ideal last time. Harry Cobden isn't champion jockey for nothing and rides the National course as well as anyone. His two wins on Ultragold in the Topham are testament to that.

Kitzbuhel steps up a long way in trip for this attempt at winning at the highest level. Willie Mullins must think he's up to it, and I don't think we should argue with the Irish master. I would be very much against the favourite, Teahupoo, despite him being the best staying hurdler in training. He is a soft ground horse who we have always been told needs long breaks between races. He raced only three weeks ago, had a hard race at Cheltenham, so surely can't be winning here.

Act Of Authority

I think the main question surrounding Act Of Authority is whether he gets the three-mile trip. If he does, he has a fabulous chance of taking this wide-open handicap. He was second in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, and, after the winner's very good second in a Grade 1 on Thursday, he had an impossible task. Act Of Authority was raised five pounds by the handicapper for that run. However, the jockey was unable to claim his seven-pound allowance in that race. The claim reduces his racing weight here, so effectively he is two pounds better in than at Cheltenham. I think he has a fine chance to go one better here.

Interesting to note that Rab Havlin, who's ridden the horse most times, has been booked to ride.
