The very capable Quinn stable always targets this meeting with some of their better horses, particularly their sprinters. That looks like the case again with Easy Peeler. She didn't get the best passage at Chester last time, so that run can be set aside. Prior to that, she went off favorite at Thirsk. However, there was quite a bit of rain before the race was run, and her chance was negated. She won a decent fillies' handicap at York before that, and I could see a similar outcome here.

Brazilian Belle is a three year old filly who is in fine fettle with herself, and improving rapidly. She was an excellent second to Lafy Roxby here three runs back, and that filly ran a blinder to finish second at York at the weekend in a much better race than this. She then won at Thirsk, and was narrowly beaten by a Jim Goldie improver at Musselburgh last week. The pair were nicely ahead of the rest that day. Michael Dods is flying at the moment, so I have a lot of confidence in Brazilian Belle here.

Shagraan is a sprinter enjoying a good season and is still improving at a fast rate. He ran well in two pattern races on his most recent starts, but it's his last handicap run that takes my eye. He finished two lengths behind American Affair at York in May, and unlike the winner that day, didn't edge towards the more favorable part of the track. He was giving the winner three pounds that day, which on reflection was an impossible task. He has also shown he handles Goodwood as he won at this meeting last year. It seems a bit crazy given the size of the field, but I fancy him quite strongly.

Kinross would be a very popular winner here, but I'm siding with the three-year-old Jonquil. He won the Greenham over this trip on seasonal debut and followed up with a very narrow second in the French Guineas. That is the standout form in the race, and I think we should ignore the run in the Commonwealth Cup as the trip was too short.

@11.00

Win

300

Dwindling Funds is a Jim Goldie horse that has been given a very odd campaign thus far. He only started racing this season at four years of age. Initially, he was tried around a mile. That wasn't successful, so he was tried over sprint trips. Unsurprisingly, that proved fruitless, so the last two tries have been at a mile and a half or further. Whilst that was only marginally better than what went before, he did, at least, look as though there might be a little ability there. Now he tries a mile and a quarter in a very poor race. It's anyone's guess if this will be his trip, but at a double-figure price, I'm prepared to have a small each-way play.

I may be completely wrong, but I cannot for the life of me see why Crown Of Oaks is as short a price favourite as he is. I know he comes from the stable of William Haggas, but there is nothing in his form that suggests he can take this handicap. If anything, I think he may be regressive rather than progressive. The next two in the betting are far more appealing. Austrian Theory had some good form in some strong handicaps when trained by Charlie Johnston, and Tim Easterby has one win with him under his belt, with more to come I expect. He was an excellent fifth in the John Smith's Cup at York last time, and has actually been dropped a pound for that. This is a much easier opportunity than that ultra-competitive handicap, and he must have every chance of winning.

Giselles Izzy isn't the easiest horse to catch. However, she is capable enough on her day. She seems to like Ayr and returns here after a fair effort at Hamilton last time. The winner of that race, Jannas Journey, is well ahead of the handicapper, so there was no shame in being beaten by that one. The second at Hamilton, Rain Cap, won at Pontefract on Sunday, so the form looks OK for the grade. The trainer runs three in this race with the stable jockey on the selection, so let's hope he's riding the correct one.

Young Buster is very lightly raced for a nine year old, however he has a very acceptable strike rate. He ran in a couple of valuable races prior to winning smartly at Kempton last time. Given he doesn't run very often it is likely that Fergal O'Brien will have him spot on despite being off since April.

He ran a great second in the Royal Hunt Cup, and a repeat of that should be enough to see him home, in what is a slightly lesser race than that. There is going to be a very strong pace in this race, given the number that like to make the running. York favours those that are up with the pace, so I believe one of the pace setters might be able to hang on and win. I've plumped for the veteran, Birkenhead, who is a previous winner of this race. He has been running creditably without winning so far this season, however today might be the day for him to come good.

As always this is a very tough handicap, with one or two that will progress to pattern company in due course in the field. The Ed Bethall trained Yorkshire looks a fair each way price, and should run a good race. He ran a very nice race in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at the Royal meeting, after a short break. He is quite well treated with those that re-oppose here, so theoretically he should go close. His draw is probably the main negative, as a few places higher would have helped.

Pocklington remains a sprinter with untapped potential. He is very lightly raced so far in his career, and has been quite highly tried on his appearances to date. He finished second on seasonal debut behind the Newcastle specialist, Fivethousandtoone, at that track. He went down by only a short head, so that has a very good look to it. I notice that he is still a colt, which looks like they think he might make up into a stallion for the Bond operation. If that is the case he needs to be winning races like this, along with some at a higher level still.

This is a fiercely competitive card for night one in the Racing League, and winner finding looks very tough. My main hope on the evening is Jer Batt, whose form needs close examination. He completely missed the kick in the Dash at Epsom on Derby Day, and that meant all chance was gone. His first run of the season when he finished close up behind American Affair and JM Jungle at Musselburgh is as good sprint handicap form as we've seen this season.
