Le Ligerien is much better in very soft ground so this race at Lingfield should be just what the doctor ordered. I can also see reasons why most of the others won't win, making the selection a very strong fancy.

Traprain Law is a very promising young chaser who might shine in this valuable race. He put up some good performances last season and there was nothing wrong with his comeback run at Carlisle. Lucinda Russell has a fantastic record at Kelso and hopefully this will be yet another winner for her.

Ginny's Destiny went really well for a long way at Cheltenham in the Paddy Power, but lack of a run led to him folding tamely in the final quarter mile. With that run behind him, he should be spot on for this challenge. He had some strong form last season and has a touch of class.

With the weather likely to play havoc with the turf fixtures, I am looking at the all-weather to make a little bit of Christmas cash. The most likely winner on the card at Wolverhampton looks like Alzahir, who drops back down to Class 4 company in this handicap. Most of the opposition look out of form or are just moderate animals. Jennie Candlish is going well at the moment, and Alzahir should add to the trainer's winning tally as well as avenging an unlucky run last time.

Something is still quite lightly raced, and the one thing I think we can take as certain is he is far better on the artificial surface compared to grass. He has won twice and been second twice from six starts on the Tapeta. His trainer, Jedd O'Keeffe, has been in good form lately, which is another positive. I also think the booking of Finlay Marsh is a bonus as he is riding on the crest of a wave at the moment.

After a very long losing run, Mondammej finally got his head back in front here last time. Whether it was the wind operation that did the trick or the huge drop in the ratings, I couldn't be certain. But there has to be some scope in his vastly reduced mark. The trainer, Anthony Brittain, has seen an upturn in his yard's fortunes since the short break for flat horses, and I can see Mondammej striking again.

I think Fasol will ideally be suited by further. However, when the hurdle track rides soft at Sandown, it can seem like very hard work, so he might get away at the minimum trip here. He also needs to do a bit better than at Cheltenham. However, that was his first run back, and the Nicholls horses have needed the run in the main.

The new training combination of Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith are at last hitting a bit of form which is probably what you would expect of this yard with proper winter weather starting to set in. The Paddy Pie hasn't set the heather alight so far this season but he looks extremely well handicapped on his best form and he has won at Sedgefield previously. He isn't as good as he once was however if he can raise his game I think he should go close.

This is a wide-open looking handicap that could be claimed by quite a few of these. Lord Rapscallion is not one to rely too heavily on because he's as likely to run moderately as he is to give of his best. The positives are that he is dropping down the ratings and has a fair record at this track. At the price, he could give an each-way return.

Bass Rock was very highly regarded in his younger days with Sandy Thomson but he had a miserable campaign last season. The owner has given him a change of scenery sending him to Georgie Nicholls to see if that will rekindle the fire. His first run for the new yard was only moderate however he may have needed the run. If he could recapture his earlier form he would have a chance here.

The Rehearsal looks a wide-open race this year, and I have a feeling the improving Bowtogreatness might be the answer. He jumped really well at Newbury when winning last time, and if he repeats that jumping exhibition, he can claim the prize. The second at Newbury won at Doncaster on Friday, so the form has had a boost. Jumping is usually what wins the day at Newcastle, as it's a stiff test, and some of these may struggle to get round.

In contrast to Nicky Henderson, who has won this race nine times, multiple champion trainer Paul Nicholls has won it only once. That should probably tell us to back the Henderson runner, but I think Liari has a good chance of getting a winner on the board for Nicholls. Liari was a very progressive novice last season, and her pipe opener at Chepstow should have her spot on this time.

No Ordinary Joe

@23.00

Nicky Henderson runs four in this tricky-looking handicap hurdle, and a case can be made for all of them. No Ordinary Joe is the biggest priced of his four; however, I don't think he's a forlorn hope by any means. Last season was a write-off after an aborted chase plan didn't work out. If we look at his handicap form in 2022/23, we can see two very good runs. A fair effort in the Betfair Hurdle here was bettered by a fine second in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. He raced off 139 that day and is on 140 here. Freddie Gordon takes five pounds off, which effectively has him off a mark of 135. The master trainer used to often put up a top conditional in some of the tough handicaps, particularly at Cheltenham, to improve his chances, and I wonder if he's trying that here. No Ordinary Joe has run really well after a break previously, which gives me hope along with all the other positives.

I think there are big question marks around three of the first four in the betting in this race, which leads me to my strong fancy for Zanndabad. He has very strong form on the flat, including excellent runs in the Chester Cup and Irish Cesarewitch. Although he hasn't won yet over hurdles, he has been gathering good experience in decent races at that discipline. Tony Martin has been in grand form and can land this valuable prize.

This looks like a very competitive renewal of the race run in memory of the legendary race caller, Sir Peter O'Sullevan. Although owned by J P McManus, Genois will race in the colors that belonged to the late commentator. McManus was a great friend of Sir Peter and bought the colors after his death. Genois had fair form in Ireland but left that well behind when winning with some authority at Wetherby at the start of the month. He looks well up to defying the ratings rise and can win again.

I'm prepared to risk a little each way on the northern-trained three-year-old, Model Approach, in this open-looking handicap. He shaped with promise when winning at Sedgefield and Kempton before coming to grief in the Wensleydale Hurdle at Wetherby a fortnight ago. He was quite fancied there, and if the fall hasn't dented his confidence, he can run well here.

As open a November Handicap as you could wish for, with many having decent chances of taking the final race of the turf season. Chillingham has had a light campaign, presumably waiting for the easier ground the autumn provides. His most recent runs have been over further than this trip, and I think he will appreciate the step back. His trainer has had a fantastic season and can close it out with a victory in this famous old race.

This would be a hugely popular winner should Latenightpass prevail in the Grand Sefton. He simply loves Aintree and, as we know, horses with form over the National course very often raise their game when they return. He's won and been fourth in the Foxhunters at the National meeting, and made a very fine fist of it in the National itself back in April. He was in front two from home that day and just ran out of petrol in the final stages. If he's still in contention at the last he will stay on as strongly as anything.

Admiral D has dropped a long way down the ratings and has a further seven pounds taken off by the useful conditional booked here. Soft ground is ideal. Soul Icon has finished second in his last four races, which would generally be a bit of a warning sign, but he's not looked either unwilling or ungenuine in any of them. His second in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen was a good effort, as was his run at Ayr at the Scottish National meeting. This is a higher grade than he has tackled so far, but it doesn't look like a particularly strong Grade 2.

This is the last race on the Kelso card, due off at 1:52! I can see no sense whatsoever in starting racing as early as this because the paying public are just not going to rock up for morning meetings. Start times will be even earlier in December, which is nonsense. Anyway, no matter what time it is, something has to win, and I think the in-form Phil Kirby might have his newcomer, Smart Bucks, ready to give a good account of himself.

Willaston ran like a horse in need of the run at Uttoxeter last time, and I think we will see a much straighter individual this time. This trip would seem to be more of his optimum now he's maturing so we should see him get competitive this time. His trainer, Mark Walford, is in good form which feels like another positive in Willaston's favour.

Velasco appears to have plenty to do in this race, however there are question marks over most of his rivals. He was a little unlucky to slip up at Newcastle last time so that run can be ignored. He has shown that he is capable of winning races, although none as good as this one so far. We definitely shouldn't underestimate this trainer either because she is most certainly capable of getting the best results from her horses. She's unfashionable which often means her runners go off at prices a bit bigger than they really should be. Velasco could easily find his way to a place here.

Ideally, more rain would have been better for Zip's chances of winning this race for a third time, however he still has every chance.
