Jer Batt never got competitive last week at Haydock, where the winner simply blasted the opposition off the park. The softer ground here will be a plus, and if producing his best form, Jer Batt can take this race.

Commanche Falls isn't getting any younger, but he's still got plenty of enthusiasm and ability. His third at York last time in a very hot looking handicap was his best run of the year. He won't be inconvenienced by the easing ground, and is likely to run to form again. He looks a solid each way shout.

Up The Pace is a progressive three year old who has raced consistently throughout the season. His splitting of Leadman and Two Tribes at Newmarket in July looks a very good bit of form. He's also handled soft ground previously, and that may be crucial here. He comes from a small yard which, I think, is the reason he's a bigger price than he possibly should be.

The last two runs from Vince Le Prince don't offer much confidence on the face of it, but they were at Carlisle, and I think he is generally better on easier tracks like Musselburgh. Tim Easterby appears to have maneuvered him back down the ratings to a mark he can certainly win off. The yard is still flying along strongly, and it would be no surprise to see them land another winner here.

There are some regulars in this field who are OK, but don't stand out. Maghlaak is the best horse in the race, however, he has a big weight to shoulder. He did run very well in the stayers' handicap at York's Ebor Meeting, and that was a much better race than this. I think he's worth chancing.

Air Force One has been in good form, and was only narrowly beaten at York last weekend. The first two were nicely ahead of the rest, which gives the form a strong look. This five and a half furlong looks ideal, and I can see him going very close again.

South Shore hasn't raced at Chester before, so it's an unknown as to how he might handle the track. He does handle soft ground, which he is likely to face here. He went into my notebook when a very unfortunate second at Beverley a few runs back, and I thought he might have won a race by now. This isn't a strong race by Chester standards, and South Shore might just be good enough to win.

This looks like this may have been the long-term target for Shadow Dance. He was a close third in this famous old handicap last year off a pound lower mark. He's raced just twice this term, firstly over an inadequate trip, then in the Ebor, which was probably too tough an ask for him. The easy ground looks sure to suit, and the very good Ray Dawson can steer him home.

Hornsea Bay has looked quite progressive as the season has progressed, and I think he can take this nice handicap. He didn't run as well as I had hoped at Chepstow, although that is not an easy track for lots of horses. He's much better judged on his excellent second at Ayr two races back. The winner that day, Crown Of Oaks, is very smart, as he showed at Ascot on Saturday. Kevin Stott teamed up with David O'Meara to win a race at Haydock on Saturday, and they can repeat the trick here.

Woolhampton bounced back to form last week at Sandown in no uncertain manner. He loves Ascot, appreciates the easy surface, and comes from a stable simply flying just now. The Barrons have seen most of their runners run very well over the last couple of weeks, and must have hopes for Jer Batt in this competitive handicap. He boasts strong course form, along with top sprint handicap form against some very smart types. His third behind American Affair and JM Jungle at Musselburgh earlier in the year looks outstanding. He was unlucky in the Dash at Epsom after the Musselburgh run. He won this race last year off a three pound lower mark which gives confidence that he can repeat that victory.

Lazzat holds the best form in this Group 1 sprint, and I will be surprised if he doesn't take all the beating. His win in the Jubilee at Royal Ascot was a hugely impressive performance, beating a star Japanese sprinter with the rest well beaten. I think he will try to break fast and make all. Few of these will be able to land a blow if that's how things work out. James Doyle said on Thursday that any ease in the ground wouldn't be a problem, and sounded quite confident about his chances.

I strongly fancy River Spey in this big field novice race. He's been running against some very smart types in his races so far and shown well on every occasion. His Goodwood race is the standout piece of form here, with several of his opponents having run to a very high level since. He ran well in a nursery at York, and with a little more luck, he might have won. He has been handed a high draw here, and that will be an advantage.

Dramatic Star looks the stable's second string in this tough-looking staying handicap, but they don't generally run their horses if they think they can't do themselves justice. Dramatic Star ran well on debut on easy ground, so the conditions shouldn't be against him. This is his first try at this trip. However, the way he won over the extended mile and a half at Newcastle earlier in the year suggests it won't be a problem.

Leadman seems best at seven furlongs at the moment, and should be suited by the stiff nature of Ascot. He ran a very encouraging race at Newbury two races back, and may have won if he hadn't been given so much to do. He wasn't beaten that far at York last time in a very tough race. Fearnot hasn't shown us yet that he is up to winning at this level, however I think he might be able to score at Pattern level at some point. It might be worth taking the chance on him doing the business here as this doesn't look the strongest Group 3 ever run. His defeat of the Haggas trained Bullet Point at Ascot in July was a very smart performance. The second went on to win a big handicap at the Ebor Meeting, and I think the trainer thinks he's a pretty smart horse. Fearnot wasn't beaten very far in a very strong handicap at York, and the stable are in top form currently.

I thought Persuasion had a fair chance in the abandoned race he was scheduled to run in at Thirsk last week. Witch Hunter is the most interesting runner in this mile handicap. He hasn't been running particularly well this season, however he hasn't met with the soft ground he thrives on so far. That changes in this race as the rain has given Ascot a fair dowsing during the week. He was a very good third in the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day last backend, off a 12 pound higher mark. That gives him a strong each way shout here. A fast pace to aim at would also be a huge bonus.
