Sing Us A Song has always had loads of ability, but wasn't fully concentrating on his job prior to the gelding operation last season. He immediately looked a different proposition after that, including winning at this trip. The trainer has always thought a lot of him and will be hoping this is his day in the sun. The booking of the first-class James MacDonald looks to me like a very good move.

I always think this race is the most competitive Listed race of the entire season, and this year's renewal looks right up to standard. John Gosden has a terrific record at the Royal meeting, and Nahraan looks like one that can add to his winning tally. He has been a bit of a slow developer but showed last season, when winning three times, that he was improving race by race. He should be completely readied for this, his seasonal debut, and looks likely to go close.

I'm going to give Puturhandstogether another chance after his Chester Cup misadventures. He went off favourite there but was beaten at the start when he fell out of the stalls and ended up out the back. It's virtually impossible to recover from that at Chester, so his eventual seventh wasn't a bad result in the circumstances.

There's no doubt that the three-year-old Mission Central has a bit to prove in this Group 1, but he looks to have improved from two to three given his two impressive wins at Naas so far this season. Naas is a tough, rising track, which isn't wholly different to Ascot, and I don't think it's coincidental that Aidan O'Brien has raced his charge there. He is probably well drawn in a high stall and could be good enough to defeat his elders.

Sam England has her string in absolutely flying form currently, and this looks a great opportunity for her dual-purpose charge, Banderas, to win. He is very lightly raced on the flat but boasts a good strike rate, including winning here at Carlisle. He was disappointing at Ripon last time, but I think we should ignore that run as he wasn't allowed to get to the front to dictate matters. Hopefully he will front run this time, and if he can, he will be very hard to pass. The very good Jake Dickson claims five, which will be an additional help.

That race was noteworthy for the poor judgment of most of the jockeys, allowing the winner a very easy lead which they were never able to close. A few of these have solid chances to be in the shake-up, but I really like the chance of Rosenpur, who seems to love the tight turns of Chester. He won fairly readily at the big May meeting over six, but the drop back to five on this occasion shouldn't be a hindrance. He only has one way of running, and as long as he can bounce out of his relatively wide draw and lead, he should be very tough to get past.

I think that Tim Easterby believes he has a very smart sprinting prospect on his hands in Red Spells Danger. He was campaigned exclusively at seven furlongs at two, but he's been dropped in trip to six for his last two runs. He won a little race at Ripon by eight lengths, and then really showed his worth by winning a fair Hamilton handicap by over four lengths. The handicapper hasn't missed him, raising him ten pounds in the ratings; however, that may not be enough to stop him winning this very hot three-year-old handicap.

Roger Varian is a very patient trainer who never rushes any of his horses, and that often pays dividends for that team. The four-year-old Ultrasoul looks a case in point. He's not been hurried to over-race, and he has steadily been upped in trip as he's developed. This is the furthest he's been asked to race; however, his breeding suggests that this should be his ideal trip. It's the first run of the season for him, but the trainer is quite capable of having them ready on seasonal debut.

Montezuma has been a revelation this season and hails from a yard that has a knack for finding lots of improvement in their sprinters. He finished first and twice second in his first three runs this season, all at Musselburgh. He looked very much a sharp sprinter. His only other run came at Hamilton last time, and there are reasons to ignore that run. He got very agitated in the paddock, attempted to demolish some of the railings when leaving the parade ring, and was very reluctant to go out onto the course. He then found himself on the wrong side of the track and, after leading early, faded out of things. That race was over six, which is probably too far on a track like Hamilton for him. There looks sure to be a fast pace in this race. He is well drawn in the centre, so should be able to track the pace wherever it happens to be. If he's willing, he has to go very close.

A typically ferocious York sprint handicap can go the way of the very in form Jonny Concrete, whoc hails from the Iain Jardine yard. He was quite heavily backed at Chester a fortnight ago, and finished a creditable third. He was then mugged by the 66/1 shot, Mae Amor, in the Sunday Series race at Hamilton on Sunday. He did absolutely nothing wrong, and the owners were very disappointed he just failed. He's got the blinkers on this time, but I think the more important factor is the slightly easier nature of the track, compared to those last two runs. It's hard not to recall the massively impressive way he won in deep ground at Sandown in February. That was only a handicap, but he was miles better than the opposition that day. His only run since was a creditable second in the Rendlesham at Haydock on ground too quick for him. Paul Nicholls is very adept at setting a target for one of his and then delivering. Fasol won a similar level race at Musselburgh earlier in the year in good style and hasn't been disgraced in better races since. He's on a mark that is manageable for him, and the good Paddy Hanlon claims a useful five.

On a terrific card at Newbury, the feature event, the Lockinge Stakes, is right up to standard. Zeus Olympios was a hugely improved horse last season, and I can't see any reason why that progress can't continue. He was only third in the Bet365 Mile at Sandown on his seasonal reappearance, but that was a race the whole field allowed Ryan Moore to steal. They gave him the easiest of rides at the front and had no chance of pegging him back in the final quarter. I doubt that things will be allowed to take that shape here. I see Zeus Olympios sitting just in behind the pace and pouncing in the final quarter.
