Nicky Richards sends three runners to Uttoxeter this afternoon, and Milcree has the best chance of the three. Milcree is 2 from 2 over fences, with his stable 2 from 5 at Uttoxeter in the past year, and he is enjoying a 46% strike rate this month (67% over fences, 4 from 6). The step up in trip looks likely to suit, and I'm expecting a big run.

The main knock on North Lodge seems to be the fact he's been off the track for 833 days. Prior to this break, his record under rules read 1-1-2-3-3, with a win in a Grade 2 novice on his second start and a good placed effort at Kelso and at the Aintree Festival, admittedly in 2022. But his final start, finishing 3rd of 10 in a 2m 4.5f handicap hurdle at Newbury in December 2023, came off a mark of 142 and after a break of 602 days. So he's run well after a lengthy absence in the past and is now 6 lbs lower than for that last start. The stable are in decent form, having had seven winners in the past 14 days, and the price on North Lodge looks too big off a decent-looking mark.

Nab Wood is another Nicky Richards runner worth an each-way bet at Uttoxeter today. He's been given a short break after underperforming at Windsor last time out, but comes back today with the stable enjoying a 46% strike rate in March. Nab Wood has won 2 of his four starts this season and has gone up from a mark of 123 to his current mark of 134 in the process. The short break could have freshened him up, and with five places being paid here, Nab Wood can reach the places for an each-way from the stable.

Nell's Son is worth chancing at 50-1 in the opener at Uttoxeter, running over hurdles off a reduced mark. The veteran chaser ran over hurdles on his seasonal reappearance and finished 5th, only beaten 6.75 lengths in a Class 2 at Carlisle in November. He was running off a mark of 135 that day and carried 11st 13lbs, but gets to run here off a mark of 129 and is running in a weaker-looking Class 3 race off the same weight. With four places being paid, the yard are in flying form, having had seven winners from 15 runners in the past two weeks. The selection could well find his way into the top four, and a win at huge odds isn't ruled out.

Prince Hector looks rock-solid each way betting material in the last race at Chelmsford tonight. He's run over this course and distance three times and has never finished outside the first three. That includes last time out where he was second, beaten 1/2 a length under today's jockey off a mark of 47. He's gone up 1 lb for that, but has placed here off his current mark in the past. He is hard to win with but likes it here and could well get his head in front tonight.

Mad Dash hasn't shown much to date, especially on the all-weather. But her stable are red hot at the moment. The last eight runners that Andrew Balding has sent out have produced five winners, two seconds and a third. One of the favourites for this race is Ollie Sangster's Life After Love, who came good at the fifth attempt last time out on her first go at 5f. I'm expecting Regatta to take a step forward from his debut, where he finished 7th, beaten 10 lengths at Newbury in a stronger-looking race than this. The favourite comes from a powerful yard that has success with their runners here, so could be hard to beat, as he is also open to improvement from his debut. But Regatta's yard are in great form at the moment. Ferguson has had 2 winners from 3 runners in the last 14 days, and his last 6 runners have produced 4 winners. Jane Williams had an impressive winner at Kempton yesterday, and she's had three winners from her last 10 runners, so she is in decent form. I have question marks about a few at the top of the market, with horses having proven themselves on better ground and trainers who aren't firing at their usual rate or who don't have many winners at Hereford. No Boundaries is encountering heavy ground for the first time, so there are questions here too, but that is reflected in his price, and his trainer is definitely in form and has had three winners from four runners at Hereford in the last 12 months.

One Horse Town has been beaten himself in his last two starts, most recently by a Skelton horse, so the yard know the measure of One Horse Town. Hypotenus is running off softer ground than he's encountered for some time, but Venetia's horses often handle these conditions well. Rule Me In can get off the mark over the larger obstacles at Southwell this afternoon. The Christian Williams-trained horse has had three runs over fences to date. He's been beaten at least 25 lengths on all three starts, but the last of those was over 3 miles and stretched his stamina too much. He's dropped from an initial mark of 107 to a mark of 100 and is 1 from 1 at Southwell. He's got form over 2m 4f in soft ground, finishing second, although he was beaten 19 lengths on his second hurdles start a year ago. The horse that beat him in a maiden that day was Wade Out, who's now rated 145, and the selection was only getting 5 lbs from the winner. The horses behind him that day make his current rating look workable. Christian Williams has a good strike rate overall at Southwell, and this could be the day to be with this runner.

Christian Williams's horses haven't been in great form of late, but his runner at Leicester the other day ran a good race. His first winner in four weeks could be on the cards early today. Prince Cleni has run over this course and distance four times and has won three of those races. His last win was over course and distance, off his current mark on New Year's Day 2025. That was also the last time he ran on soft (heavy) ground. With Charlie Maggs claiming 5 lbs, he's carrying 12 lbs less than any other horse in the field. I'm struggling to see why there is such a difference between these three horses in the market. Three-runner races are often falsely run, and there is a reason the old adage is 'back the outsider in a three-horse race.' That last win came after an absence of 628 days, so he's won off long breaks before. In fact, including his debut, he's 3 from 3 when fresh. If Jakub Mensik is fit for this match (he withdrew from the Australian Open in the fourth round with an abdominal injury, his third withdrawal since September), he should be far too good for Jan Choinski. The world number 16 should be able to win the first set 6-4 at worst and a similar score in the second set. Choinski is an in-and-out server and, although when he's in he hits a lot of aces, he will drop games against such a strong player. I don't see Choinski breaking Mensik's serve today. 6-2, 6-4 is a likely scoreline. I don't see this going three sets, and I don't see either set going to a tiebreak.

All her best form has been over the minimum trip, though, and although she was beaten over 20 lengths on her chasing start at Bangor, that was over 2m 1.5f in soft ground and the two horses that finished in front of her are both rated 140+ over fences. But I'm forgiving him that last run; his jumping wasn't good, and he's been given seven weeks to get his act back together.
