Surprised this has been drifting as his form reads very well. Was 6th to Merchant at Royal Ascot. The winner won a Group 3 yesterday. The runner-up was 2nd in a Group 1 whilst 5th has also won a handicap at this meet off 3lb higher. Ammes is unpenalised for that and whilst having led for a long way there before getting headed, the drop in trip should benefit. Drawn in 5, so should be able to get a prominent position again. The only concern is the ground, having never raced on softer than good.

Surprise defeat last time when odds on in a handicap. Just seemed to get outpaced in a small field over 1m 2f on good to firm ground. The extra furlong on softer ground should suit well, whilst the form has worked out okay from that race. Clearly, more was expected, so every reason to think he is well handicapped off 84.

Does need to bounce back after a disappointing run last time, though had shown the ability remained previously. Hard to get away from his Temple Stakes win last year over the 5f at Haydock on soft ground, some of the best soft ground form on offer. Creditable 5th in this last year, they turn to cheekpieces just to help the horse concentrate. Drawn high could be the place to be after yesterday also.

Impressive winner of the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, winning despite being away from the main action. Does have a penalty for that, but 5f on softish ground should be no problem and was 2nd on previous start to a French horse who has since won a Group 1.

A horse I have been following this season should be getting his reward at some point. A big field over a mile and on softish ground should be ideal. He is a hold-up horse who will need some luck but has what looks like a good draw, so he should be on the premises again.

Quite simple. Big field handicap on soft ground, then you just have to back this horse. Top six runs according to RPR on turf have come in 1m soft ground handicaps, which looks to be the conditions today. Has gone close twice off this mark, goes well fresh. There is a lot to like despite his growing age.

Really like his chances, though not really one for staying trips. A promising stayer in France on soft ground, he struggled to adapt when first coming over. However, much more promise in the last couple of runs, including at this track when 3rd to the current favourite, followed by the Northumberland Plate when the only one to make some ground from behind. Longer trip and soft ground should be no problem here.

I like both the Ian Williams horses here, but with the betting suggesting this is a stronger chance, I have to back it. Strong stayer who loves softer conditions, so has plenty in his favor. Returned from almost a two-year break with a promising 5th at this track, possibly a sighter with an eye on this. Wasn't suited to the 3-runner race on good ground at Beverley last time, but that should have put him spot on for this, and he has a nice weight pull on a few of these principals.

Closely matched with King Casper on their run at the start of the season. Another who lacks that turn of foot, but if he can race on the pace then he gallops all the way to the line. Returns to turf, he is weighted to go close with King Casper and drawn to attack from stall 2.

Still think the favorite is a short price considering the size of the field, his low draw, and the potential to get stuck in behind, especially after racing yesterday where it appeared to favor those racing on the pace. Therefore, I have turned to Marhaba Ghaiyyath. Is the 2nd favorite but in great form, has a good draw, and is likely to be prominent. Has gone up the weights but did run an unexposed Godolphin horse close last time. Trainer often targets this meeting plus gets Buick in the saddle.

Lightly raced, who may lack the experience for this. But, the form of his first win has worked out and suggests he could be well in off 88, especially if accounting for improvement. Ground is a question mark, but on breeding, his brothers and sisters had no issue with softer ground. Considering more than half his siblings have black type, then it's not unreasonable to think he can improve further.

Let me down at the weekend, though watching replays, he got a bad bump just when trying to make a move and then challenged possibly on the slower ground away from where the finishers came from. Whilst I like Leadman on the form of his last win, and Stanage as an eyecatcher as a fast finisher, both will need a great deal of luck from stalls 3 and 1 respectively. Therefore, I have looked wider and like the chance of Mr Chaplin, who won at the meet last year, staying on late and fast from a double-figure stall. Tried in graded company the next twice last season with no luck. First run this year they targeted a c/d handicap only to get stall 1, which unsurprisingly meant getting no run whatsoever. Drawn on the wrong side in the Britannia, never getting involved, but it does mean he is 2lb lower here. Suggest this has been a target and so expect him to go close, all being well.

Even though a 7-year-old, his form of beating Westridge at Windsor two runs ago (who won yesterday in good style) suggests a 5lb rise may not be enough to stop him. He flopped last time, but a lot went wrong at Southwell on the all-weather there, while he is also 0/10 on the all-weather and approximately 6lb worse according to RPRs. Now, stall 5 for a hold-up horse at Goodwood is a concern, but it is not the strongest of races, and I am prepared to chance it.

Got to forgive pulling up last time at Royal Ascot when losing her action. I am judging more on her 2nd to Crimson Advocate at this course. Bright Thunder who finished 3rd has a better pull at the weights now but as a 3yo I am hopeful she has more improvement in her. Strongly run 7f should be up her street even though it is rare for me to back a horse at this trip who has yet to win at it. Was sprinting most of last season then mostly at a mile this season. Finally back to 7f which should prove her best trip.

Jabaara is joint top on RPR for the race and actually won the race last year, only to get demoted for interference. So an element of redemption is on offer. Disappointed a little last time, though came from a wide draw and has yet to prove she handles the a/w as well as turf. Whilst it looks an all-round stronger race this year, there is still no standout opponent. Tabiti is favourite but is another to come from the Sandringham at Ascot, whose form is disappointing massively.

My nap of the day. I could go into a lot of detail, but to sum it up, the form of her two runs this year has worked out very well, enough to suggest she could be thrown in here off a mark of 92. That is compared to Zgharta and Dash Of Alure, who ran well in the Sandringham, a race that is working out pretty poorly. You then have Mahra's Star, who is on a hat trick, up in class and will have competition for the lead. Didn't seem to stay last time. The drop back in trip will suit, whilst I have no problem with a wide draw at Goodwood, where it can help get a run and give a good opportunity to build up the speed and momentum down the outside.

These races are not always straightforward, so it may be worth chancing a potential improver at a price. I like Witness Stand, who is stepping up in class but is a smooth traveler who won a handicap easily over C/D at this meeting last year off 97. Followed it up with a close 2nd, giving Qiraat 13lb, with the winner now rated 10lb higher over C/D again. Followed that with a win in listed company by 3 lengths over English Oak before his season tailed off with a poor run at Newmarket in a Group 2. First two runs this year have not gone to plan but did return with promise in a listed race at Chester last time with a close 2nd to an in-form rival. That should have put him spot on for this, and if able to return to his form of last year, then he could surprise.

Gets in off a low weight and, though drawn wide, history has suggested it is no bad thing as you can avoid the trouble and come down the outside. Just the one run this year, winning at Chester with the form working out well. The runner-up won over the same c/d by 4 lengths on next start, and the pair were over 3 lengths ahead of the third. Up 8lb is fair, though you hope as a Haggas improving handicapper that there could still be more to come.

Switched yards but it was a standout performance last season so clearly enjoys conditions here and I suspect the horse has been targeted at this race again having stayed with the same owners. Won from the widest stall of all last year so another wide draw is no concern. If returning here creates the spark needed then he should go very well.

Not been suited to the way the race has been run the last couple of times, though Southwell, a track which can often help prominent runners and where he has already previously won, is a welcome return. Open race when you consider the favorite has never run at a trip short of a mile in its life, not even as a 2-year-old. This could come as a culture shock on first try in a sprint, so worth taking on. I will chance Believing, who was done by the draw at Royal Ascot. The first four home were in stalls 14, 15, 16, and 17, whereas Believing came from stall 1 with no cover or pace at all. As the winner of the Al Quoz Sprint, a valuable Group 1 race over 6f, the step back up in trip should help here. Drawn amongst the action, I expect him to go close, and hopefully winning if things drop right.

Went in my notebook as he was extremely impressive in victory, with there looking plenty more to come. Personally, I hate horses under a penalty as many trainers like to get them beat so the handicapper doesn't treat them too harshly. However, he is progressive, and if they have some bigger targets in mind, then they need him to go up the ratings to get in.
