But for fighting for his head, Dannick would surely have won last time. I've had him in my tracker since debut. Since that last run, he missed 4 engagements, only once for a vet certificate. If George can get him to settle, he's a cracking bet in this with the added bonus that he's an each-way price and there are 4 places instead of 3. I'm on personally at 7/1 in the main bits and pieces and 8/1. He's a sure-fire winner regardless of tomorrow's outcome. Gets weight off the whole field and has got lucky in the draw, not being drawn in the car park (though due to style of running, not such a major factor compared to normally). Judged on two most recent runs, the trainer sorted out his quirks in the stalls and his slowness from them. A rare bet at maximum stakes with 4 places on offer and two points above what I expected. I envisage him being very well backed.

To complement Fitzpatrick in the outrights, I'm also siding with Robert MacIntyre, who made up for the heartache of being beaten by Rory in 2023 by going one better last year. He seems to excel on links courses and is playing better than ever. 22/1 is a bit on the skinny side. However, I'm not certain for all Scottie's brilliance, links bring out the best in him. He missed last season, had a third, and missed the cut. Xander has freely admitted his game's all over the place, 'driving him nuts,' which is definitely not the right mindset. Take those two out, and unquestionably, 22/1 looks too big for the defending champion and a player who knows his way around here.

Matt Fitzpatrick looks like he's coming back into decent form in recent weeks stateside. He has some excellent form when playing links golf over the last 3 years. His two outings here produced sixth and runner-up spots, so we know this course will certainly play to his strengths. At 50/1 in the First Round Leader market, I think it seriously underestimates his chances. Similar comments apply to the outright bet. I envisage his price shortening between now and tee-off Thursday.

Matt Fitzpatrick is slowly returning to form. There have been some encouraging signs of late that his turn is at hand. He has a superb record when playing the links. Finished runner-up and sixth here in the last 5 years, also won Dunhill Links two years ago. Despite an exceptionally strong lineup this year, I envisage the likes of Steve Palmer in Wednesday's Racing Post putting him up. I think 33/1 will therefore shorten. It's worth looking around as a number of bookies are offering more places than the norm. In particular, Ladbrokes occasionally offer extra places on their in-shop bet station.

He has a fourth, sixth, and third in the last three years and is a strong links player. As previously mentioned with Ludvig, take out Xander and Scottie, arguably his odds would be considerably shorter. Taking on trust his mindset, but he should be in the top ten.
