Pirots 5 Slot (ELK Studios)

The Pirots 5 slot is played on a 6x6 grid with the CollectR mechanic. Unique to ELK Studios, pirot characters will collect the same coloured symbols that are adjacent to it, moving horizontally or vertically.

With a minimum bet of 20p a spin, the maximum bet is £5 per spin in the UK (or up to £2 if you’re under 25): use the ‘Coins’ icon to see a screen full of bet options. Outside the UK, there is an Auto Spin feature (10 to 100 auto spins) and Quick Play mode (within Settings).

The Pirots 5 RTP rate is 96%, which is in line with the online slot game average. ELK Studios has also produced 94% and 92% RTP variants. Based on a £20 starting balance and a 20p minimum bet, below is the number of expected spins before running out of funds for each RTP version:

• 96% = 2,476 spins
• 94% = 1,651 spins

Medium to high volatility (7/10), a winning outcome will occur every 1 in 3.98 spins on average as the hit frequency rate is 25.1%. In terms of win potential, Pirots 5 comes with 10,000 x bet max wins (the same as previous Pirots games).

With an ancient Egyptian theme, the Pirots 5 slot sees the birds return home victorious. The premise is that Skipper has crashed into a theme park map and accidentally burning it. Revealing the lost city of gold and traitor Captain Blackfeather’s location, the setting is an ancient Egyptian temple entrance. The soundtrack is typical for a game with this theme.

On the 6x6 grid, you’ll see blue, green, purple and red gems: they are 7 payout levels (more on this below). The red gem is the best paying symbol, awarding up to 25 x your total bet when upgraded to level 7. Other symbols include the 4 pirots, upgrade, upgrade all, Coins, a Max Win Coin, 4 Wilds, Transform, Super Transform, Captain Blackfeather and Scarab Bonus Scatter. More on these below.

Collectable Tokens

There are a total of 9 collectable tokens in Pirots 5, with 3 in each world (Cursed Temple, The Kraken and City of Gold). If you successfully collect all 9 tokens across all 3 worlds, you will permanently unlock the Boss Castle feature. Tokens can drop in on each spin and are worth 5x. The collection of tokens is global and persistent, with your progress being saved. Finally, there are no collectable tokens in the Cursed Temple Coins game.

Symbol Collection & Feature Symbols

As alluded to above, birds move and collect gems of the same colour as the birds themselves, as well as feature symbols. With a meter above the grid keeping score, filling the meter will see a feature symbol released after the birds cannot collect more symbols. Transforming gems into random feature symbols, here is what they entail:

• Upgrade: upgrades the payout level of 1 of the gems by 1-3 steps. It can upgrade other birds’ gems if its gems are on level 7.
• Upgrade All: upgrades the payout level of all 4 gems simultaneously by 1-3 steps.
• Coins: a collected coin symbol payts its value times the bet level. There is a Max Win Coin that immediately pays the remaining amount required to pocket the game’s max win.
• Transform: transforms a cluster of gems next to the bird into gems of the same colour as the bird. It can also transform a random number of gems into feature symbols.
• Super Transform: works the same as the Transform symbol but it transforms gems 2 or 3 times.
• Captain Blackfeather: if a bird appears adjacent to the Captain Blackfeather symbol, it will activate the Captain Blackfeather feature (more info below).
• Token: there are 3 in each world and help permanently unlock the Boss Castle feature.
• Wilds: substitute for any gems at the current payout level.
• Bonus/Super Bonus: these help trigger their respective bonus features.

Captain Blackfeather

The Captain Blackfeather feature is triggered if a bird appear horizontally or vertically adjacent to Captain Blackfeather. Then, Captain Blackfeather turn 1-4 birds into ghosts and transform their symbols into Blackfeather gems, worth up to 30 x your total bet each. With a chance that additional birds are transformed, Blackfeather gems will take the highest payout level of the taken over birds gems.

Switcheroo

The Switcheroo feature may be triggered by 2 adjacent birds: the birds switch places horizontally or vertically. A super Switcheroo may also triggered by 2 adjacent birds: 1 of the birds is moved to the edge of the grid or to the next symbol it can collect in its trajectory.

Labyrinth

The Labyrinth feature is triggered when 3 or more birds land horizontally or vertically adjacent and are unable to collect more symbols. This removes all gems from a random number of rows and columns with the birds moving along the rows and columns until they are separated.

Catacombs

With Catacomb corners located in each corner of the grid, every catacomb is assigned a random bird’s colour at the beginning of a spin. If a bird collects a symbol on top of a catacomb corner of the same colour as the bird, the corner is activated and the bird enters the catacombs.

Captain Blackfeather can also enter the catacombs if he takes over a bird with a highlighted gem on top of the corresponding catacomb corner.

Catacombs contain 4 1x1 coffins and gems or feature symbols in all other positions. A hidden position exists horizontally or vertically adjacent to all coffins. When a bird collects on the hidden position, a fight with a mummy occurs. If the bird wins, a feature symbol is awarded. If the bird loses, it is removed and the bird returns to its corner position on the grid. If Captain Blackfeather, he is guaranteed to win every fight.

Trap features

Pirots 5 comes with 3 different Trap features:

• Arrow Shooter feature: it is activated when a bird collects a symbol or walks on top of an Arrow Shooter Trap (these appear on the outer rim of the grid and are kept pending). The Arrow Shooters fire their arrows when the birds are unable to collect more symbols. If an arrow hits a bird, its corresponding gems are turns into gems of a random bird when the bird removed from the grid. If all 4 birds are hit by an arrow, a random number of existing gems of the last surviving biard are turns into coins. Removed birds can return to the grid on the next symbol refill.
• Boulder feature: activated when a bird collects a symbol or walks on top of a Boulder Trap, a boulder in 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 in size will roll horizontally or vertically across the grid, crush all gems, walls and birds in its path. Pending arrow shooters and feature symbols won’t be affected. Removed birds can return on the next symbol refill.
• Secret Door feature: activated when a bird collects a symbol or walks on top of a Secret Door Trap. Splitting the grid into 4 squares and rotating them 180 degrees, gems, birds, traps and features move into new positions. Cross-over floor tiles allow birds to cross already collected positions.

Cursed Temple Coin Game

The Cursed Temple Coin Game feature is played when the birds have collected all the collectable symbols on the grid during the Secret Door feature.

Taking place on an 8x8 grid with a 2x2 sized Cursed Treasure in the middle. With a bird in each corner, initially coins and a rotation trap on the grid. With 3 drops awarded, land 1 or more symbols or birds resets the drop counter to 3.

If a bird ends up vertically or horizontally adjacent to the Cursed Treasure without more symbols to collect, the Cursed Treasure feature is triggered. The bird is removed, adding its bird win counter to the total win counter and a random number of coins are dropped onto the grid. Coins and drop on empty positions, land on existing coins (increasing the value) or drop on birds (multiplying the current bird win counter by 2).

The birds can collect coins instantly if a coin ends up horizontally or vertically adjacent to a bird. All bird win counters are added to the total win counter before the next drop. Ending when no more drops are available, Captain Blackfeather can appear, upgraded the cursed treasure.

Charlie’s Extra Chance

The Charlie’s Extra Chance feature can randomly activate when the birds are unable to collect more symbols. A random number of traps on the grid are activated.

Cursed Treasure Coin Rain

The Cursed Treasure Coin Rain feature can be randomly triggered in the base game. A random number of coins are dropped onto the grid: they can drop of gems positions or on already existing coins (increasing their value).

Portals

The Portals feature sees portals appearing randomly amongst the walls surrounding the grid. Birds can teleport between portals if it has collectable symbols adjacent to 2 or more portals. Walls acts as tunnels if consecutive walls connect 2 portals. Each tunnel section can reveal feature symbols, which are collected as the bird passes through. There can be up to 4 portals on the grid simultaneously.

Bonus & Super Bonus

The Bonus feature is triggered by collecting 3 Scarab Bonus Scatter symbols in the base game. With 5 free spins awarded, landing a Scarab Bonus Scatter will give you 1 extra free spin.

Importantly, the progress on the symbol collection meter and the gems payout levels are persistent. If there is an Arrow Shooter Trap or feature symbol release pending when the feature triggered, they are activated on the first free spin.

Captain Blackfeather is persistent between free spins too. Finally, you can also trigger a ‘Super’ version of the feature, if 1 of the Scarab Bonus Scatter symbols is a Super version. You’ll get 1 Cursed Treasure Coin Rain at the beginning of each free spin.

X-iter

Lastly, Pirots 5 comes with an X-iter feature, with 5 options available:

• Bonus Hunt: Costing 3 x bet, you are 5 times more likely to trigger the Bonus feature.
• Mega Bonus Hunt: Costing 10 x bet, you are 20 times more likely to trigger the Bonus feature.
• Cursed Temple: Costing 50 x bet, you are guaranteed enty to the Cursed Temple Coin Game feature.
• Bonus: Costing 100 x bet, you’ll trigger the Bonus feature.
• Super Bonus: Costing 250 x bet, you’ll trigger the Super Bonus feature with a Cursed Treasure Coin Rain on each free spin.

Despite the name, the Pirots 5 slot is the 6^th game in ELK Studios’ iconic series. With adventures into outer space, exotic islands, the Wild West and prehistoric worlds, this time you head to ancient Egypt with the infamous birds.

For starters, ELK Studios has managed to cram in so many extras and bonus features that its hard to keep up. With the CollectR mechanic seeing birds collect gems and feature symbols (when the meter is full), upgrade symbols increase the gems payout levels and transform symbols will help the birds collect more gems. Coins are important with a Max Win Coin also available.

Captain Blackfeather plays a huge role in Pirots 5 as he transforms bird gems into Blackfeather gems, which are worth more. If he enters the catacombs, he is guaranteed to win every fight with a mummy which results in feature symbols.

I really like the Secret Door feature as it splits the grid into 4 and rotates them 180 degrees for more opportunities to win. In the Cursed Temple Coin Game feature, it’s a Hold & Spin feature with lots of little extras to keep the action exciting. There are also random coin drops and portals that sees birds teleport and more feature symbols revealed in tunnels. In the free spins, all progress is persistent with the super free spins seeing the a number of coins are dropped onto the grid on every free spin.

With 10,000 x bet max wins, I would have hoped that ELK Studios would have increased the max win potential as it’s the same headline figure as other Pirots slots. That said, ELK has managed to add in so many extras that the gameplay far supersedes that in its predecessors. In summary, the best Pirots game to date without question.
