The Huff N’ Puff CollectR slot is played on a 6x6 grid with the CollectR mechanic. ELK’s unique mechanic was introduced in the Pirots series and it easiest explained as follows: each symbol pays out its value as long as the colour of the gem matches with the colour of its respective pig collector.

Symbol Collection & Collection Meter

With the CollectR mechanic, pigs collect the same coloured symbols by moving horizontally or vertically adjacent collectable symbols. Also, pigs will continue to collect gems until they cannot collect any more. If 2 or 3 pigs line up adjacently, the following feature may trigger:

• Switcheroo: If 2 adjacent pigs appear, the Switcheroo feature may trigger, when they can’t collect more symbols. If triggered, the pigs switch places horizontally or vertically. 1 of the pigs will be moved to the edge of the grid or to the next symbol it can collect in its path.
• Piggy Fight: The Piggy Fight feature is triggered when 3 or more pigs appear horizontally or vertically adjacent and are unable to collect more symbols. The pigs fight into 1 symbol position removing all gems in a 5x5 area before flying award horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The corner bombs, Wolf Construction symbol, Bonus and Super Bonus symbols will be automatically collected or activated if they are in the path of the flying pig. Gems removed from flying pigs will not count in the symbol collection meter.

Collection Meter

With symbols collected in the symbol collection meter above the grid, collected symbols and activated pig symbols are removed from the grid with new symbols dropping in to fill the empty grid positions.

When you fill the symbol collection meter, 1 pending feature symbol release is added: up to 3 feature symbol releases can be kept pending, which are award simultaneously. There are several different feature symbols:

• Bonus: Triggers the Bonus Game feature.
• Super Bonus: Triggers the Super Bonus feature. 
• Wild: Substitutes for any gems at their current respective payout level.
• Upgrade: Upgrades the payout level of 1 of gems by 1, 2 or 3 steps.
• Upgrade All: Upgrades the payout level of all 4 gems by 1, 2 or 3 steps.
• Transform: Transforms a cluster of gems next to the pig that collected it into its same colour and may change a random number of gems into feature symbols.
• Jackhammer: Allows the pigs to cross the empty grid positions 1 time each to reach extra clusters of symbols.
• Wolf Construction: Triggers the Wolf Construction feature (more details below).

Corner Bombs

In the corner of the grid, you’ll see Corner Bombs. Each with a different colour, they correspond to each pigs’ colour. If a pig collects a symbol on top of a bomb of the same colour, it explodes when pigs cannot collect more symbols. Removing all pigs and gems in a 3x3 area, it also removes the connected pipeline section.

Allowing for the grid to expand up to 8x8 in size, a pig can move through the pipeline when it can collect symbols at the entrance and exit of the pipeline. Each tunnel section can reveal up to 2 feature symbols (which are collected). When 2 or more pipeline sections have been removed, a well can appear: pigs can travel between wells if collectable symbols are on top of 2 or more wells.

Big Tony's Extra Chance

The Big Tony's Extra Chance feature can activated when the pigs are unable to collect any more symbols: this actives 1, 2, 3 or 4 corner bombs which all detonate simultaneously with the pigs leaving the grid.

Wolf Construction

In the Wolf Construction feature, the Wolf Collect symbols collect symbols column by column (except the Jackhammer and Transform symbols). With the ability to activate Corner Bombs, the wolf can collect a Wild which pays as the current highest achieved payout level. If the wolf collects an Upgrade symbol, 1 of the payout symbols is upgraded.

When collecting a pig, a fight in instigated. If the wolf wins the fight, the crane multiplier increases by 1 and the defeated pig is removed from the grid. However, if the pig wins against the wolf, the feature ends with the crane multiplier applying to the accumulated value. If the wolf defeats all 4 pigs, the wolf collects all remaining symbols on the grid with the crane multiplier applied.

Golden Wheel

When the pigs or wolf have collected all collectable symbols on the grid, the Golden Wheel feature is in play. It spins to award Hat Mania, Mega Hat Mania, the Bonus Game feature, Super Bonus Game feature or a bet multiplier prize.

Hat & Mega Hat Mania

Taking place on a 6x6 grid, you are awarded 3 drops. 3 or more Hats will give you 1 extra drop. With only hats up to 6x6 in size and empty positions landing, all frames in view are replaced by houses that reveal Coin symbols. Frames have 3 levels (straw, wood and brick) which reveal their own range of Coin symbols: Coin symbols come with bet multiplier values up to 2,500 x your total bet.

The Mega Hat Mania feature is the same as the Hat Mania feature but takes place on an 8x8 grid. Hats can appear up to 8x8 in size with 1 or 2 Mega Hat Drops awarded before the feature begins.

Piggy Bank

When Piggy Coins are added to the Piggy Bank, they can trigger the Super Wheel or Jackpot Wheel:

• Super Wheel: this can award Hat Mania, Mega Hat Mania, Bonus Game feature, Super Bonus Game feature or an instant bet multiplier prize.
• Jackpot Wheel: this awards an instant payout of between 10 and 2,500 x your total bet.

Wolf Demolition

The Wolf Demolition feature can activate when pigs are unable to collect more symbols. It blows up and removes all symbols on the grid. It can also remove 1 or more pigs from the grid for the next spin.

Bonus Game

Triggered if the pigs collect 3 Saw Bonus symbols, 5 free spins are awarded. Landing 3 or more hats on the same free spin will give you 1 extra free spin.

Hat symbols add frames or can upgrade frames. Frames remain in play throughout the feature with Coins revealing Coins at the end the feature.

A collected Saw Bonus symbol will trigger the Saw feature: beginning from the position horizontally or vertically adjacent to the pig that collects the Saw Bonus symbol, it moves in that direction across the grid. Frames are created or upgraded on all positions that the Saw Bonus symbol passes over. If it moves over a brick frame, a new brick frame on another position appears.

If 1 of the 3 Saw Bonus symbols was a Super Bonus Saw, you’ll trigger the Super Bonus Game feature instead. The difference is that it begins with the Super Saw feature active. Working like the standard version, the Super Bonus Saw can move over the same row multiple times.

X-iter

Finally, there is an X-iter feature which has 5 options with some not available in the UK. Below are the details: 

• Bonus Hunt: Costing 3 x bet, you have 3 times the chance of triggering the Bonus Game feature.
• B.B Wolf: Costing 25 x bet, you get 1 spin with the max grid size and the Wolf Construction feature. The Super Bonus Game feature is guaranteed if you trigger a bonus game.
• Mega Hat Mania: Costing 50 x bet, you trigger the Mega Hat Mania feature.
• Bonus: Costing 100 x bet, you’ll trigger the Bonus Game feature
• Super Bonus: Costing 250 x bet, you’ll trigger the Super Bonus Game feature

Where do I begin? ELK Studios has applied their popular CollectR mechanic to Light & Wonder’s Huff N’ Puff series in the Huff N’ Puff CollectR slot. Packed full of bonus features that all interconnect, playing in demo mode is must as it is rather confusing being honest.

Staying true to the Pirots series, it does feel like ELK Studios has just changed the theme to The Three Little Pigs. Comparing to Huff N’ Even More Puff Grand, the gameplay is quite similar but with the eating mechanic replacing the ways to win mechanic.

I like how ELK allows for the grid to expand up to 8x8 in size: this allows for more symbol collections. With upgrading symbols and crane multipliers, the Hot and Super Hot Mania features is all about building up frames which in turn leads to Coins and bet multiplier prizes. Don’t underestimate the Piggy Coins as the Super Wheel or Jackpot Wheel will award bet multiplier prizes up to 2,500 x bet or access to other bonus features.

The biggest wins will come from the Bonus Game feature (or Super version) naturally but with 5,000 x bet max wins, I think ELK Studios has missed a trick with the max win potential. It’s half of the 10,000 x bet max win potential available in Huff N’ Even More Puff Grand and less than the 2 other Huff N’ Puff slots mentioned above. Maybe Light & Wonder didn’t want ELK to outshine them?

In summary Huff N’ Puff CollectR is full of bonus features that can all pop off at once, delivering a familiar Pirots experience with a fairy tale twist. I’m sure this is the first of many Huff N’ Puff games from ELK with the hope that they increase the max win potential significantly in future releases. That said, it’s an entertaining game with ELK sprinkling its magic to take the Huff N’ Puff series to a different level.
