  • New UKGC bonus rules take effect Monday 19 January 2026, banning cross-product promotions between betting, casino, bingo and lottery.
  • Operators must ensure promotional offers relate to a single product vertical, unless the bonus is completely unrestricted in how it can be used.
  • Free-to-play games that award mixed gambling bonuses will also be banned.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has confirmed that new bonusing rules will come into force on Monday 19 January 2026, bringing significant changes to how gambling promotions are structured across betting sites in Great Britain.

Originally proposed in March 2025 and delayed from a planned December rollout, the rules will prohibit gambling operators from mixing product verticals within a single offer, for example, offering free casino spins for placing a sports bet, or vice versa.

The new rules are part of a wider effort to improve clarity and consumer protection in the UK gambling market and follow ongoing concerns about how promotional offers may mislead or confuse players by tying together unrelated products.

What Do the New Bonus Rules Mean?

In short, any promotional offer must now be tied to a single gambling category, such as sports betting, casino, bingo, or lottery unless the customer is given total freedom of choice in how and where they use their bonus.

For example, it would be acceptable to offer:

  • A ā€œBet Ā£5, Get Ā£10 Free Betā€ promotion (sports-only)
  • ā€œSpend Ā£5 on slots, get 20 free spinsā€ (casino-only)
  • A credit reward usable on any product, if the customer chooses freely

It would be non-compliant to offer:

  • ā€œBet Ā£5 on football, get 20 free spinsā€ (mixing sports and casino)
  • ā€œDeposit Ā£10 and get Ā£5 free bet + 10 free spinsā€ (multi-product reward)
  • Free-to-play games where prizes include mixed product bonuses (e.g., free bet or free spins)

What Happens to Free-to-Play Reward Games?

One of the key clarifications in the UKGC’s blog was that free-to-play games fall under the same restrictions.

Even when no stake is required, operators cannot offer rewards from multiple verticals unless the user has complete choice over the outcome.

So any ā€œspin the wheelā€ game where players can win either free spins or free bets, for example, would now be non-compliant unless all prizes fall within the same product category.

What Does This Mean for Casino Sites?

From Monday 19 January 2026, licensed UK gambling operators must ensure:

  • Promotional offers are clearly tied to a single product category unless fully unrestricted
  • Mixed-product offers are removed or restructured
  • Free-to-play games that offer mixed product rewards are compliant or withdrawn

Operators who fail to follow these rules could face sanctions, fines, or regulatory investigations, something the Gambling Commission has shown increasing willingness to enforce.

For players, the change should mean simpler, clearer bonuses and less pressure to engage in unfamiliar gambling activities just to unlock rewards.

As operators adapt to the new rules, players can still find great value across the best UK casino sites, with compliant offers likely to shift towards more transparent, single-vertical promotions.
