Rugby Union World Cup History and Statistics
The Rugby Union World Cup is a fairly new event with it first being held in 1987. Since then there have been a further 9 tournaments hosted around the world by rugby-playing nations.
The Inaugural winners were New Zealand who beat France at Eden Park in New Zealand. The number of countries competing in the tournament has grown from 16 to 20 as more rugby-playing nations are invited.
4 groups of 5 teams play each other once, with the winners and runners-up progressing through to the Quarter Finals.
