Fourteen teams compete in the league, with each team playing fifty-two games during the regular season in a double round robin format.
Six of the eight playoff spots are filled by the top six teams, whilst the other two are decided by two best-of-three elimination games between those who finished 7th to 10th.
The team that finished dead last in fourteenth place are relegated to the DEL2, and they are replaced by the winner of the DEL2 playoffs.
