When Scottie Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open last week, it was the first time he'd failed to make the weekend since the FedEx St. Jude Classic in November 2022. He bounced back from that Memphis disappointment nearly four years ago with a T3 at the BMW Championship a week later, and I would expect him to respond strongly from his showing at the Renaissance Club here. The World No.1 has only won one tournament so far this year when finishing with a four stroke victory in his first appearance of 2026, at The American Express in January. However, in his fourteen tournaments since, Scheffler has finished in the top four eight times. This included a second place at the Masters in April and T4 in the US Open in June. He's also ended eleven of the last fourteen total major Championships inside the top eight and won the Open at Portrush in 2025 by four strokes. Despite Scottie's problems last week, for me he's still the standout golfer in this field. I'll therefore happily back him each-way at Royal Birkdale.

Wyndham Clark started the 2026 season very poorly, finishing with a best of T35 at the WM Phoenix Open in February from his first seven outings and missing two cuts along the way. He showed significant improvements in April, recording a T21 at the Masters, T16 in the RBC Heritage and T20 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, before missing the cut in the PGA Championship in May. A week after Aronimink, the World No. 8 won his fourth PGA Tour title when victorious at the CJ Cup thanks to an eleven-under-par 60 in the final round to win by three shots. That ignited a terrific run of form, where Clark finished in the top five in three of his next four tournaments, which included his second U.S. Open victory (coming three years after his first) in June. In his last outing at the Genesis Scottish Open last week, Wyndham was prominent toward the top of the leaderboard before a final-day over-par round left him in a tie for thirteenth place. Few players can match the 32-year-old's form at present, so I think he's a great each-way bet here.

Tommy Fleetwood has so far had a very solid season without ever really threatening to win. He started the year with a T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and a T7 in the Genesis Invitational in February. In the thirteen tournaments he's contested since, the Englishman has finished inside the top eight three times, and his last four outings have seen finishes between T11 and T14. The Open is the major where Tommy has enjoyed his best results, with his best a second place at Portrush in 2019 and a T4 at St Andrews in 2022. He was also T10 at Portrush last year. Fleetwood has been incredibly well backed for this Open at Royal Birkdale due to strong local ties, and there would be no more popular winner this week. He certainly has the game to contend and has stats of 1st in scrambling, 4th in strokes gained total, 5th in scoring average, and 6th in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour, which show a strong all-round game. 12/1 is a disappointing price, but he has decent each-way claims. I'll therefore be hoping for a top-eight finish for Tommy this week.
