This is definitely the boldest one of my four selections, but I'm taking Dundee United to win 2-1 at Tynecastle. Hearts normally deserve plenty of respect at home and their longer-term home record is very good, but I'm more interested in what's happening right now. They come into this after four straight competitive defeats, including that heavy 6-1 loss to Benfica on Thursday, so there's been very little recovery time physically or mentally. Dundee United meanwhile looked competitive against Rangers and created enough to suggest they can hurt a Hearts side that doesn't look particularly settled defensively. United have also enjoyed recent trips to Tynecastle, going unbeaten on their last three visits and winning twice. I can absolutely see Hearts scoring because of their home advantage, but I'm taking the chance that fatigue and their current defensive problems show again. It's risky, but Hearts 1-2 Dundee United is my upset call.

I'm backing Motherwell to win this 2-0 and I'm happy to go against the recent head-to-head record to do it. Falkirk have actually caused Motherwell plenty of problems in recent meetings, but I think the current form of the two sides is more important here. Motherwell have started the season looking sharp and importantly they've already shown they can win a difficult Premiership game away at Hibs. Falkirk's recent league numbers are much less convincing and their opening 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren was particularly disappointing considering they had plenty of the ball without creating enough with it. That could become an issue at Fir Park because Motherwell don't necessarily need to dominate possession to control the important areas of a match. I fancy the hosts to score first and force Falkirk into taking more chances as the game develops. If that happens, I think Motherwell can pick them off again.

I'm going Rangers 2-1 here because although I strongly fancy them to get the job done at Ibrox, I just don't trust them enough defensively to predict a clean sheet. Rangers have been involved in nine consecutive matches where both teams have scored, which tells its own story, and Hibs have enough attacking quality to take advantage of that. They also won 2-1 on their last visit to Ibrox, so this certainly isn't a fixture Rangers can simply turn up and expect to dominate. The difference for me is the amount of pressure Rangers should be able to generate at home. Historically they've controlled this fixture and their scoring record at Ibrox remains very strong. I expect Hibs to make this uncomfortable and there could easily be a period where the game looks like it's heading towards a draw, but over 90 minutes I'm trusting Rangers to create that one extra big chance. Rangers 2-1 Hibernian.

I'm going against the majority here and backing Mansfield to cause the upset with a 2-1 win. Sheffield United are obviously the stronger side on paper and most predictions favour the Championship team, but there are enough warning signs to make me oppose them. Mansfield lost just five of their final 25 competitive matches and finished last season particularly strongly, while their home form became increasingly difficult to break down. The biggest confidence boost is that Mansfield have already shown they can hurt this Sheffield United side, winning an incredible 4-3 at Bramall Lane earlier this year. United's away record and lack of clean sheets also makes them difficult to trust defensively, especially in a cup game where Mansfield should really attack this. David McGoldrick facing his former club adds another interesting angle after scoring 18 times last season. I expect Sheffield United to score, but I fancy Mansfield to nick it.
