Which MLS Teams are Profitable to Wager on?

Below we are going to highlight any MLS teams that we have managed to find betting strategies based on previous season results for the Moneyline market when supporting them at home.

The Moneyline market offered by soccer sportsbooks is a three-way market when the result of the game is being wagered on, the three options are a home win, a draw, or an away win.

MLS Eastern Conference Teams

Starting with the Eastern Conference, we have highlighted four teams that have standout numbers under certain criteria.

• Atlanta United FC
• Columbus Crew
• CF Montréal
• Philadelphia Union

Atlanta United FC Betting Strategies

Atlanta United FC joined the MLS in 2017 having been founded in 2014, they are based in Atlanta, Georgia, and go by the nickname of 'The Five Stripes'.

Despite being a fairly new team, they have already tasted success winning the MLS Cup in just their second season (2018) and then the US Open Cup in 2019.

They are a team to keep on the right side when they are playing back-to-back home games as they seem to build up some momentum in that second consecutive game at home.

From a total of 17 games in the past five seasons, they have gone on to win 12 of those, which is a 71% win rate and a $10 wager on them would have produced a profit of $43.30.

Columbus Crew Betting Strategies

The Columbus Crew is based in Columbus, Ohio, and was founded in 1994, they are two-time MLS Cup winners (2008 & 2020), three-time Supporters Shield winners (2004, 2008 & 2009), and once US Open Cup winners (2002).

They have a good record over the past five seasons when returning to play at home after just one game on the road their record is very impressive!

From a total of 21 games over the last five seasons where they have fallen under this criteria, they have gone on to win 14 of those games, which is a good 67% win rate.

Wagering $10 on the Columbus Crew to win in each of those games would have resulted in a profit of $75.00!

CF Montréal Betting Strategies

Known as CF Montréal, they replaced Montreal Impact in the MLS and are a Canadian soccer team based in Montreal, Quebec.

Founded in 1993, it wasn't until 2012 that they joined the MLS and in 2021 they rebranded from Montreal Impact to Club de Foot Montréal.

Good profits in both the 2021 & 2023 seasons mean that backing them at home over the past five seasons would have resulted in a profit of $110.40 to $10 stakes, however, 2019, 2020, and 2022 would have shown losses.

They seem to hit a purple patch at the beginning of the season and wagering on them in matches up until the end of July would have returned a profit of $179.40 in total to $10 stakes with a 61% win rate, 25 wins from 41 games.

Philadelphia Union Betting Strategies

Founded in 2008, the Philadelphia Union plays its home games at Subaru Park which is located on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. They joined the MLS in 2010 and were crowned Eastern Conference champions in 2020 & 2022.

Over the past five seasons, they have been one of the most profitable teams to back at home, simply staking $10 on them would have produced a profit of $191.50 with profits in all five seasons and a 68% win rate.

They are generally not the best of starters, their games between February and May have not been profitable so look to back them from June onwards.

Doing so increases their win rate to 78% with 38 wins from 49 and from a $490 investment ($10 stakes) they would have returned $712, which is a $222 profit and a 45% R.O.I.

MLS Western Conference Teams

Like the Eastern Conference, there are four teams in the Western Conference who also have some standout numbers which are worth a second look.

• Houston Dynamo
• Minnesota United FC
• Real Salt Lake
• Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Houston Dynamo Betting Strategies

Based in Houston, the Houston Dynamo was founded in 2005 after the San Jose Earthquakes were relocated to Houston and they joined the MLS in 2006.

They made an immediate impact being crowned MLS Cup champions in both 2006 & 2007 and have been US Open Cup winners in 2018.

The Dynamo are usually good starters to the MLS season which is what we are going to concentrate on here by looking at the early months of the season.

When you consider their home games in March, April, May & June over the past five seasons, they have an impressive 65% win rate with 20 wins from 31 games.

On top of that, had you staked $10 on them in each of those 31 games, a total investment of $310 would have returned $405.40, a $95.40 profit, or an R.O.I of 30.77%.

Minnesota United FC Betting Strategies

Minnesota United FC is based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and was formed in 2015 and only joined the MLS in 2017 as the 22nd team.

In their short time in the MLS, they are yet to pick up any major wins, they did get to the semi-finals of the MLS Cup in 2020 but lost 3-2 to the Seattle Sounders.

Backing the DRAW when they play at home has been profitable over the last five seasons, with no filters at all, it would have returned a profit of +$253.90 to $10 stakes.

You can improve that even more too by backing the DRAW when they are returning home after one game on the road, 49% of the games have ended in a draw (18-37) and returned a profit of +$334.40 ($10 stakes).

Real Salt Lake Betting Strategies

Located in Sandy, Utah, the Real Salt Lake team was founded in 2004 and is sometimes shortened to simply RSL. They joined the MLS in 2005 with their only success coming in 2009 when winning the MLS Cup.

Real Salt Lake has a decent record when at home with 39 wins from 78 games (50%) and wagering $10 on them would have been profitable with a total profit of $42.10.

Wagering on them when they are playing on a Wednesday or Friday pushes the win rate to 69% whilst still retaining a decent profit of $77.10 to $10 stakes.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Betting Strategies

Founded in 2009, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC joined as the 17th member of the MLS in 2011, and a year later in 2012, they became the first Canadian team to make the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Backing them at home over the last five seasons would have produced the biggest profit in the league with a profit to $10 stakes of $304.60 with three of the last four seasons producing 100+ profits.

You could knock off some losses by only wagering on them from April onwards and avoid them when coming off a home win, this gives you a 60% win rate (32-53) and a profit of $374.90 to $10 stakes.
