Profit is the aim and the first principles applied to all my selections are time, class, weight, trainer and jockey ratings. Everyone has their own systems and methods regarding betting. My own approach, which has evolved over many years, means I won't take a price below 2/1 under any circumstances. The reason is simple. Most of my methods involve a minimum strike rate of 30% overall. Horses below 2/1, even the winners, will only erode the profit over time. Sometimes I will tip/back a favourite - if it is 3/1 or 7/2 say, but as time goes on it becomes clear: there are many, many more bad favourites than good ones. Those wily bookies will often make a horse favourite and create the illusion that it has been heavily backed. Have fun and take care.

Previously a winner here on seasonal debut and it would be apt, on the week we lost one of the most influential Patriarchs in the sport, for her to land the treble. Some of my early punting successes were attributable to horses trained by M H Easterby running up a sequence of wins.

A trial for the Ebor with Listed status. Not many handicaps have a pattern race trial so it is a small but select field. The fav is certainly a nice horse and all four are officially within a few pounds of each other. Preference is for the top rated and much the best on time lines. Ground won't be an issue and the stable is already having a stellar year. The rider is top drawer and is on my highly reliable list.

Has won his latest two races and the treble looks within reach despite the better class of race. Travelled very well in those races and today has the benefit of a good draw and one of the best amateur riders around. Any rain would not spoil his chance and has the time figures and weight rates in favour.

The draw will be off-putting for many but he has plenty of speed and can get to the front. He tended to hang left at Thirsk which will be fine on this tight 6f. Top weight and top rate time-wise and can follow up.

It looks one of the most open Derbys in years and several are unbeaten. The Dante has been a very significanmt pointer for many years and the selection showed a lot of maturity, maleability and courage in winning that race on only his second start. Whether he can beat Ruling Court and Delacroix remains to be seen but, he looks the percentage shot. Stablemate Stanhope Gardens has had an unorthodox preparation but it would be no surprise to see them both run well in the world's greatest race.

The future plans are unclear for this horse. What he does today will probably dictate his next assignment. He has won two little races with relative ease, and he is bred to be a champion. Sure to stay further than this 10f, but his wins so far have been at this trip. Still an entire and may be much more than a handicapper in due course.
