The smallest fields often contain the biggest traps, so not a betting race for me. However, it is very difficult to oppose the favourite. She hails from the dominant stable and has been very progressive, winning a handicap, a Listed race, and then a Group 3. Aiden is the true master with this type of horse, and the colt may yet be Group 1 material.

I don't wish to oppose Precise. Her only real flop was in the Guineas, which I put down to trainer error. True Love is the only real danger, and she is too short for each-way purposes. The Johnston filly is quite interesting, as she has improved and certainly has not been over-faced. Her shrewd young trainer sent her to Germany to take their Group 2 2000 Guineas, and she certainly has the figures to get into the frame at a big price. The exceptional young rider will have a game plan, and with a bit of luck he gets into the firing line.

Unless there has been some serious watering done overnight, you need to be drawn high to have any hope. This one is drawn in the middle, so I hope Ryan has paid attention to what happened in the first race (which he may well have won, of course) and plots the right path. This horse has appeared a bit disappointing, but I suspect more improvement may be forthcoming, and he certainly has the speed figures to go well today.

Here comes a short-priced favourite that we can definitely consider. Her form is rock solid, and 6/4 or more may look a big price later. She had the mighty Gstaad behind at Deauville, and her only defeats were over 7f and 1m in the Guineas. She is very fast and looked remarkably tractable last time at Haydock, where Clifford Lee had her making rapid headway into a challenging position 2f out and basically cantered along for a furlong before kicking in the turbo. She seems happy on most ground conditions and looks good for this barring incidents and accidents.

It is not worth backing the favourite with so many unknown quantities in the race. Karl Burke is the master with 2yos and Wathnan are firing a lot of potentially lethal weapons this week. The owners only have two here, the other one being Hidden Gift with Mighty Mac on board and also drawn high. Only Victorious has really defied the draw bias. It was gutting to see Spencer "win" on the Fitri Hay horse on the low side of the draw yesterday, and he (Victorious) must be something special, I suspect. Hopefully, with a good draw, Doyle has landed on the right one today.

A very unexposed and progressive profile. I would imagine the trainer has had this race in mind for some time. Drawn high, which has been good so far this week, and the undervalued riding skills of Paddy Bradley may well be seen to good effect today.

Another cavalry charge down the straight mile. The owner had two non-runners in yesterday's Hunt Cup, so I am hoping that these two take their chances. Hugo Palmer runs three, including the early favourite (ridden by the champ), but I am taking a chance with the two Fitri Hay runners. This one is top on the clock and ridden by the rider of choice. A course winner, it stays further and will be happy on the fast ground.

It is a tight price, but he looks the next big thing in the staying division. Under the expert tutelage of Aiden O'Brien, he has won his last five, including last year's St Leger. Brought along nicely in lower grades this term, he should be ready to relieve Trawlerman of his stayers' champion mantle and follow in the footsteps of Yeats and Kyprios.

It is often folly to go against classic form, and the fav looked top drawer in the Oaks. I suspect that this race will come a bit soon for her. The trainer and rider had a day to remember yesterday, and this looks like another live chance from a high draw. The step up in trip should suit, and on weight measures a normal amount of improvement from debut should see him in the shake-up. Alfred Wallace stays further and may also get involved. He has been prepared under the radar and is the rag of the field this morning. Lightly raced in France and once in the desert, he is not conspicuous. However, he was not disgraced in three Group 3 races, and this is a big drop in class. Fourteen of the last twenty winners of this race have been 4yo's, so the two selections both meet that criterion. This one has a good high draw and a rider well versed in mile races on the biggest stage.

The race may be a lottery, so don't be put off by a big price today. You saw what can happen here yesterday, and there will be more shocks and scares to come this week. This one has the benefit of Rossa Ryan, who rode her at Goodwood on her second start. Karl Burke 2yo's are to be respected everywhere. It is not absolutely clear what she beat at Carlisle, but that is a very stiff 5f and she won easily. Not many 5f races are won by 10 lengths, so it may have been a Group-class performance. The rider has a tough job picking the right horse from the Wathnan massive, and he has already been on the wrong one this week. Plenty more to come, though, and he can start day two on the right note. The only concern is the draw, and it seemed the high numbers were favoured yesterday.

This is trickier than a Times crossword. We were on Bow Echo for the Guineas and he duly delivered. He will be favourite to follow up here, but just as many beaten horses in the 2000 Guineas have won this as have the winners of that race, and even more of both have been beaten here. My marginal preference today is for Ryan's mount, who is ultra-consistent and may well have further improvement in him.
