Profit is the aim and the first principles applied to all my selections are time, class, weight, trainer and jockey ratings. Everyone has their own systems and methods regarding betting. My own approach, which has evolved over many years, means I won't take a price below 2/1 under any circumstances. The reason is simple. Most of my methods involve a minimum strike rate of 30% overall. Horses below 2/1, even the winners, will only erode the profit over time. Sometimes I will tip/back a favourite - if it is 3/1 or 7/2 say, but as time goes on it becomes clear: there are many, many more bad favourites than good ones. Those wily bookies will often make a horse favourite and create the illusion that it has been heavily backed. Have fun and take care.

It is that time of year when the 2yo's come into sharp focus and we see some winning sequences, a few winning newcomers to confuse the classic picture for next year and some answers to a few unanswered questions. Karl Burke has dominated the 2yo division so far and he says he has yet more to unleash in the autumn. This one is no worldie but has made steady progress and won easily here when stepped up to 6f. His sire, Victor Ludorum won the Jean-Luc Lagardere, a G1 in France over 1m which more recently went to Rosallion and Camille Pissarro. He clearly is not that good yet but, still an entire, he may be on an upward curve.

Quite a dark field, but he is 1/1, and that was a resilient effort. Weight matters, of course, but not so much at this stage of a horse's career. I love it when those RTV and ATR pundits tell us how tough it is to carry a penalty, especially in stakes races. In actual fact, it isn't hard for an improving 2yo or 3yo to give weight, and it is a profitable strategy to support them (in the right situation) over the long term.
