There is a form line that I am interested in for this race which concerns Broadway Ted with Nolimit, Charismatic Kid, and It's Only a Game. They ran against each other and finished in the order listed. Boycetown, on its opening run, finished three and a half lengths behind It's Only a Game. It then followed that up with a demolition of its opponents next time, winning by 18 lengths, but it could have been 30??"40 lengths. The trainer adds a tongue tie to the horse today, and I am going to back the horse to finish in the top 10 and maybe each way. It seems foolish to back against Willie Mullins winning this, as he has done so six times in the last eight. Only two short-priced opponents have managed to beat his horses (7/2 and 2/1), so trying to identify which Mullins horse is always a puzzle.

Rubaud was only just beaten by Alexei last time (giving 2 pounds) and has other good form, including here at Cheltenham behind Lossiemouth. After today, Alexei would be a strong favourite for this race. That suggests Rubaud must have some sort of chance in an open race, and I am hoping the Nicholls stable wins this race for the third time in the last eleven runnings.

Only just beaten in the final fifty yards by Romeo Coolio last time, and that run gives the horse every chance of being competitive here. That horse beat none other than Kargese last time, giving that horse seven pounds, so for this horse to be 12/1 to me is madness. I will be hoping the horse runs better at Cheltenham than it did last year, but it has certainly improved since then.

40 Coats ran an incredible race in the Turners last year behind The New Lion and Final Demand (owners massively bullish about this horse today) and ahead of Potters Charm. Was unfancied at 150, but this year the horse has been supported into single-figure prices with some bookies. Will enjoy the better ground and has form beating such horses as Ballysax Hank and McLaurey in a maiden.

Oscars Brother has beaten The Wallpark (well regarded) and O Moore Park, who ran a great race to finish 6th today behind Madara. He has loads of recent winning form, and his only finish outside the top three in ten outings was due to an unlucky fall. He has continued to improve and should be right in the mix, as the horse is adaptable regarding trip and ground.

Klimt Madrik has form that ties in with the very short-priced favourite No Drama This End, and at 40/1 or bigger it has to be worth a punt to back this consistent horse today at each-way odds or to finish top ten. That is 11/10 at Sky Bet but bigger on Bet365 at nearly 2/1. Will like the drying ground and has been strong at the finish.

Pauling has become a trainer to follow in handicaps at Cheltenham. If you look at Pic Roc's form, it has plenty of promise for this race. The horse ran really well at Newbury in November when highly fancied, finishing close up behind 3 Card Brag and The Changing Man and ahead of Katare Dori. At Ascot the horse was improving from off the pace (usual running style) when making a bad error, but last time the horse was back to its best, winning very easily. It is likely to enjoy the extra distance and should be stronger at the finish than most.

This horse was previously trained by Nicky Henderson and showed good Cheltenham form from that time. Recently the horse has been tried over more extreme distances, and although the horse has yet to win for Faye Bramley, it has improved with each run. Last time the horse was very close behind Dartmoor Pirate and New Order. Could be a surprise package.

Will The Wise has been tried back over three miles in its last two runs and the horse has not really achieved anything. (Has a previous run at Cheltenham over hurdles at this distance, which was very encouraging.) Prior to that run, the horse justified strong market support to win over 2 miles 2 furlongs at evens. This intermediate trip, off just a few pounds higher than that last win, could prove decisive, added to its solid course form. The trainer has added a tongue tie too, just for emphasis.

Golden Ace is not probably the best horse in this race, but we do know the horse can win at this level, loves the track, and performs well at this time of year. One of the young pretenders may step up, but I think this is a great each-way bet. The horse is a sound jumper at speed, and that has proved the undoing of many horses here at Cheltenham.

Jagwar

Daily Racing

Jagwar has everything you would need for a solid bet. He loves it here, has won at the festival, and the going for him here will not be a problem. He has two things to overcome: more weight (up nearly a stone since last year's win) and the extra distance. He has yet to prove he stays this far, but the horse always finishes races over shorter distances strongly and full of running. Many of his rivals also have questions to answer, but few have the same solid credentials as Jagwar.

I would love this horse to return to the form of its win in this race last year. It is hard to forget that run when the horse demolished its rivals that day. It has a training duo that can easily prepare the horse for today. Up 15 pounds, but it may be rejuvenated back at the Festival.

I was really looking forward to backing the other Nicholls horse here but have switched allegiance since the plot to get this horse into the race this week has evolved. The horse had to win at the weekend to rise in the weights and did so effortlessly, and now the horse is eligible to run here. It is only three days later, but I don't think the horse even knows it had a race. Nicholls said (in his Betfair column) that the horse had been bouncing back at home since. I am happy with its previous French form and think the horse should do itself justice here.

Madness Delle

I am not that keen on the current favourite Saratoga, even though a horse that beat it on its first run (Minella Boss) won this week to frank the form. I always look for an unlikely Willie Mullins winner (there's always a couple??"take Poniros last year at 100/1), and this horse is my idea of such an opportunity. Has steadily improved and looks the ideal type for this race. Likes to lead, travels well, and finishes strongly but certainly needs to cut out the mistakes.

Kopek Des Bordes

With the amazing record Willie Mullins has on day one, I am siding with his horse in a likely duel with Lulamba. Both horses have excellent Cheltenham form. I had to bite the bullet last year with William Munny (second in the Supreme behind this horse), and the third, fourth, and fifth read like a who's who of this year's festival runners. I am forgiving the horse a poor run at Punchestown on fairly heavy ground, and the likely good ground should really suit.

Several of these arrive here with (almost) unbeaten records and top potential, and this should be one of the races of the festival. Again, the likely duel is between a Henderson horse and a Willie Mullins horse. Of the two, I fancy Old Park Star. I was convinced by this horse's finishing speed last time that, along with its super slick jumping, this horse will be very tough to pass. I remember Tom Segal (Pricewise) saying, "Forget all you think you should know about a group of horses and simply pick the fastest one and back that." I hope he is right here, as that is the methodology I used.

Runs better over this longer distance. Although up a stone in weight for its three wins, it will love the ground and the jockey takes off three pounds. Should get an easy lead and could demonstrate the speed it showed at Ludlow last time when it won easily by 13 lengths.

Performed badly in between two eye-catching runs when held up to get three miles. Likely to be allowed to track the leaders and be involved, like it did last time when winning really easily by 13 lengths. The small field should suit, and the regular apprentice is on board and knows the horse well. Taking off seven pounds means the horse only has 11:10 on its back. Is back up in trip, but hopefully connections will employ better tactics today.

To have a horse that has placed in two graded races on its last two runs (a Grade 2 and a Listed race) at 5/1 is baffling but could provide a decent payday. Distance and ground are suitable, and the trainer has some good hurdlers. It has a short break to overcome, but it did run well first time up this year. Ignore its previous run at this course when its saddle slipped.

Has some very good back form when finishing third to Moon Chime at Huntingdon in 2024. (That horse is now rated 131.) Showed that it still has ability when running respectably at Cheltenham last time. The odds-on favourite was beaten by a 300/1 shot last time, and that horse has blown out every time since to demean the form. Little else in the race has any comparable form.
