We wait for the final race on Day One in what promises to be a fantastic week’s racing at Royal Ascot. He won the Heritage Handicap here 12 months ago over 20f, so it's interesting that connections drop him back in trip to 14f. That is quite a drop, but he is very versatile regarding distance., as after winning here 12 months ago he went to York and came 2nd of 22 over today’s trip in the Ebor. He has only been seen once this term and it was in early May when he was well beaten here over 16f, but that was a Group 3. Today, back in a handicap and with the cobwebs blown away, he can hopefully make light work of his welter weight and make the trip from Ireland pay dividends.

Unbeaten in four starts, and on his season debut he ran away with the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May. He beat the re-opposing Gstaad then, and there is definitely no reason to suggest the result won't be the same again today. He is the banker of the week for some, and it would be a shock if he were turned over.

My next best goes to Suhub, who was with William Haggas for seven starts without getting her head in front. The switch to James Owen looks as though it can pay dividends. Thirteen days ago, on her first start since the switch, she was 2nd of 10. She is here off the same mark, and with Mason Paetel taking off 5 lb again she looks well weighted to make her presence felt.

Queen of Ithaca could be anything, but I'm siding with the race-fit Brunhilde, who has at least one run and some experience under her belt. It was 24 days ago that she made her debut at Southwell over 8f. After a slowish start, she was an eye-catcher at the business end with a strong finish. The extra distance here looks a wise move, and with Billy the Kid Loughnane steering, she can upset the jolly.

Joolianoss catches my eye at the foot of the weights, with Toby Moore taking off a very useful-looking 7 lb. My selection stays further than this 8f, which is no bad thing with this stiff finish. He was winning for the fourth time when last seen on 1st May at Ascot, suggesting there could be more to come.

Last five starts have been uninspiring, but there are a few things I like about Brian in this Class 3 handicap. Back into a more suitable class (Class 2 when last seen). Soft ground will suit. David Probert booked. Five places on offer, and here off a mark of 90. Has form here last October when second of 13 with the ground soft off a mark of 95.

Fleurman stands out to me back on the all-weather, where he has already won and placed over course and distance this year. With a decent 3 lb claimer on top, his mark today is 65, which is 2 lb lower than he carried when winning a Class 4 in March (Class 5 today). Going back to 2024, he was seen here at Kempton over today's trip, finishing 4th of 11 off a mark 33 lb higher than today's. Taking into account all of the above, he must have a live chance.

Still a maiden after six starts, but she is warming to the task as she has shown the last twice. 4th of 10 early last month at Bath over 5.5f, and then two weeks later 2nd of 12 at Windsor 6f. We know how much Tony Carroll likes winners here at Brighton, and Cape Toronada can provide him another.

Blue Prince looks very well handicapped on some of his old form. Did win here off a mark of 89 back in '24 and gets in here off a decent-looking 79. He was returning from a 215-day break when last seen at Kempton, finishing 3rd of 14, beaten only a length. He will hopefully come on for that and go close.

Prydwen stays further than this stiff Derby distance of 12f and will not be inconvenienced by the rain, unlike some of his rivals. He has won off higher marks in the past and will hopefully be up with the pace before pressing for home turning in.

Despite the disappointing run of stablemate Amelia Earhart yesterday, I am keeping the faith with Ballydoyle and Ryan Moore and siding with Benvenuto Cellini. Every Derby has a class act, and I believe he is exactly that. He has done little wrong in his five starts to date and was very impressive 31 days ago when stepping up to this trip for the first time. Obviously the ground and trip are a concern, but they all have to handle it, and the winner is the one who handles it best, with hopefully my selection coming out on top.

Not the most original selection, but I feel she was the most visually impressive when winning the Cheshire Oaks on her seasonal debut 30 days ago. Ryan Moore sticks with her despite two others from the yard, and the 9/4 on offer looks good value.

Low-class stuff in the lucky last at Ripon, but my selection on his second handicap start could prove the answer. He only had four starts, and that was his first handicap and first run since being gelded, which saw him run his best race yet, finishing 3rd of 13. Here, off the same mark, he could easily come out on top and break his maiden tag in this bottom-draw handicap.

I think it's well worth connections dropping Star Time back to 10f after a 5th of 10 at Kempton, which was a good effort considering it was a first start for 433 days. Will strip fitter for that start thirty days ago, and interestingly Tom Marquand is legged up for the first time.

I would not want to be Shipshape travelling all the way north to Hamilton (a near 760-mile round trip). That said, connections must feel this is the right race, and who are we to say otherwise. Twice a runner-up and a win in his last three starts, so he is in form and very likely to go close.

My selection had a great year in 2025, winning four times and finishing runner-up three times from ten starts. One of the wins was first time out, so we know he goes fresh. He ran two nice races to finish his season, both in Class 2 affairs. Dropping back into Class 4 stands out, as does being second favorite.

Not normally a contest I would be involved in, but at a price I feel Persian Sunset is a nice each-way bet. She made her debut 16 days ago at Beverley, which isn't the best track to navigate for a 2yo. She was slowly away and was last of the five for most of the way, showing plenty of greenness until the last furlong where the penny dropped and she stayed on strongly to finish third. No end of improvement to come for sure, and the price looks rather large.

You should never change your mind, but here goes. First I was keen on Chelio and then on to Cape Toronada. Now I've sided with the Rod Millman-trained Arvana Belle, who 21 days ago made her seasonal debut at Bath over 8f and was bang there until just over a furlong out when weakening and squeezed up. She finished 6th of 6, beaten just over 5 lengths, but she has won and placed over 6f and looks well weighted with Gina Mangan steering now back at the right trip.

Not very often do you hear about Ryan Moore running into trouble, but that is exactly what happened last week at York when riding Redorange. Admittedly it was a cavalry charge, so luck in running was an important element of that sprint. Interesting that he is turned out again so quickly (very unusual for Clive Cox) and with Rossa Ryan booked he can gain compensation.
