While he was disappointing in some of his recent starts over fences (including a 4th at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day), returning to a track where he has won and getting his preferred heavy ground makes him a very strong contender in this today.

She is coming directly off a career-best win at Wincanton 30 days ago. She won that 3-mile handicap hurdle by nearly 2 lengths in very testing conditions, proving she has both the stamina and the grit for today’s distance. Her recent form shows she thrives when the emphasis is on endurance, and the ground here should play perfectly into her hands. At 6 years old, she is an unexposed, upwardly mobile type who likely hasn't reached her ceiling yet.

Comes here off a massive performance at Windsor, where he finished a half-length second behind Go To War in a 15-runner field. He has a proven track record at Haydock. He finished a close second over this course and distance in March 2024. Knowing he handles the unique long Haydock straight is a huge advantage. Aside from one pulled-up effort over fences (which clearly didn't suit him), his hurdle form is remarkably consistent: 2-3-2-2-1. He is a horse that almost always gives you a run for your money.

Jonbon is widely considered the best horse in this field. He has a near-flawless record, having never finished outside the top two in 26 career starts. He won the Clarence House Chase here last month. He knows the track intimately and has a fine record at this venue. While he has spent much of his career at 2 miles, trainer Nicky Henderson believes he is screaming for this longer 2m 5f trip now that he’s older. He won over a similar distance at Aintree (the Melling Chase), showing he can handle the extra half-mile.

Arrives here after an absolutely dominant 21-length victory at Wincanton 30 days ago. He didn’t just win; he demolished the field, showing he is in fine form. This trip is his bread and butter. He is a relentless galloper who won’t stop, which is exactly what you need at Haydock when the ground gets heavy and horses start to tire. He is arguably the best mud-lark in the race. He loves heavy and soft conditions.

Has a fantastic track record at Ascot, with two wins from three starts over fences here. He ran a massive race last time out at Kempton, finishing a close 2nd, beaten just a neck. Jockey Ben Jones and trainer Ben Pauling are a potent duo at Ascot, winning nearly a third of their races here recently. At 11 years old, he remains on a workable mark of 139. He has proven he can compete effectively at this level when the conditions suit.

Won a 15-runner novice hurdle at Kempton just 12 days ago by 15 lengths. He looked completely unextended. He is a half-brother to the legendary Gold Cup winner Native River. This suggests that today’s step up to a full 3-mile trip should be exactly what he wants and could see even more improvement than his rivals.

Comes into this race fresh off a victory at Fairyhouse just 11 days ago. In that race, he handled the heavy conditions perfectly, showing significant improvement to win a 10-runner handicap comfortably. Despite a 7 lb rise in the weights for his recent win, he's possibly still ahead of the handicapper and has more to give. His best career form, including his win last time out and a strong second-place finish in November, has come on heavy ground.

A lightly raced seven-year-old, he finished third at Hereford on his seasonal reappearance in December. That form has since been boosted significantly, as both the horse that won and the one that finished fifth in that race went on to win high-quality races in January. He has proven winning form on soft and good-to-soft ground, which matches today's conditions perfectly. Carrying only 10st 4lb, he is receiving a significant amount of weight from higher-rated rivals and should put up a big showing.

For the first time in his career, he is fitted with cheekpieces today, and that could be the catalyst for the improvement needed to see him return to his old form. He is plummeting down the weights, running today off a mark of 124 ??" nearly 20 lb lower than his peak rating from his time with Nicky Henderson. If he retains even 75% of his old ability, he is technically extremely well handicapped. With the 5 lb claim from Benjamin Macey, he is carrying a featherweight. Worth a speculative each-way play.

Won the valuable Virgin Bet Heroes' Handicap Hurdle at Sandown just 14 days ago in dominant fashion, winning by 9 lengths on the bridle. Today's testing conditions at Haydock are exactly what he wants. Henri the Second is a battle-hardened stayer. He has competed at the highest level over this distance before and won't be found wanting for stamina in the final furlong. Paul Nicholls is in red-hot form (operating at roughly a 40% strike rate in the last fortnight). Just hope this doesn't come too soon.

Ludor

Lud'or is in the form of his life. He returned from a long break in November to win by 27 lengths at Bangor. Since then, he has followed up with two incredibly solid third-place finishes in highly competitive Class 2 handicaps at Newbury and Windsor, which suggests he's still on an upward curve and hasn't yet found his limit. His last run was over 3 miles on soft ground at Windsor, where he finished very strongly. This proves he has the stamina for today’s grueling trip at Haydock, whereas some of his rivals (like French Ship) are still unproven at this distance.

Won over this CD four weeks ago, jumping flawlessly to win a Class 3 handicap by over two lengths. Proven on soft ground, which is the official going at Ascot today. Since switching to fences this season, he has won two of his three starts. His only blip was a fourth at Cheltenham, where he didn't seem to appreciate the track, but his return to Ascot suggests he is back in his comfort zone. The race has cut up significantly. With Thomas Mor (the previous second favorite) declared a non-runner, The Jukebox Kid's primary opposition is now much thinner.

Since moving from Paul Nicholls to the Olly Murphy stable, he has been in excellent form. He won easily at Southwell on his chasing debut in December and followed it up with a runner-up finish at Leicester. At seven years old, he is still unexposed over fences and should have significant room for improvement. He has winning form on soft ground (including a bumper win) and handles testing conditions well.

Coming off an impressive 4½-length victory at Ludlow 30 days ago. The horse is also entered in major Grade 1 races at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival (the Turners and Albert Bartlett), suggesting the stable holds him in very high regard. He has shown versatility on different ground types, though he seems particularly effective on soft or good-to-soft going, which matches today's forecast. Holds strong claims.
