Already a course-and-distance winner here, so conditions hold no fears. The 5 lb penalty asks a question, but with Mason Paetel’s useful claim offsetting much of it and his current form so reliable, he looks sure to give another bold showing.

Has taken well to handicaps, winning at Lingfield over a mile before following up here over 7f in January, showing a smart turn of foot. His latest run over 9.5f can be forgiven; he didn’t quite see it out after travelling well. The drop back in trip looks ideal and, with Billy Loughnane aboard for a yard in form, he’s entitled to be a leading player again.

Easy enough to forgive his latest at Southwell, where he didn’t quite see out the 7f on Tapeta. Back on this track, he’s a different proposition. His handicap record here reads 2-1-4-1-2, including a win over this trip in November after a six-month break. He’s only 1 lb higher than for that success and clearly goes well in these surroundings. With conditions back in his favour, he looks a serious contender.

Has been knocking on the door, finishing in the frame in five of her six starts and shaping well again when third in a Kempton maiden over 7f last month. She travels kindly and keeps finding, which makes her a reliable type in this grade. There may be one or two with a bit more upside, but she sets a solid standard on what she’s achieved so far and should be firmly in the mix once again

Absolutely thriving and now chasing a six-timer. Had to dig deep to defy a double penalty over course and distance 15 days ago, showing plenty of resolution to get the job done. He’s another 5 lb higher here and doesn’t have the benefit of a claim this time, so the task is tougher. Even so, a horse in this sort of form demands respect, and it would be no surprise to see him right in the thick of it again.

Consistent without quite getting his head in front last season, making the frame in three of five starts, including a solid third over course and distance in August. Returns from a six-month break having been gelded, which could unlock a bit more progress. He doesn’t have bundles in hand on what we’ve seen, but the form is solid for this level and he sets a fair standard. Very much one for the shortlist.

Had been in solid nick at Kempton prior to a below-par effort there over 1m 3f last month, where things simply didn’t fall his way. That run is easy enough to forgive given his earlier consistency, and he’s now back down to a workable mark. He was well beaten on his sole previous start on Tapeta, but at around 28/1 he’s not without hope if rediscovering his earlier form. A lively outsider who could outrun big odds.

Really progressed when switched to fences last season, winning twice from four starts after joining this yard and looking a stronger, more mature model in the process. His recent hurdles spin at Thurles should have sharpened him up nicely for this return to chasing. Top weight asks a question, but he’s on an upward curve and has the profile of one who can defy it. Looks a big player if building on last season’s improvement.

Lightly raced and much more convincing over hurdles than fences, with both wins coming at Limerick. Looked revitalised back in this sphere in December when powering clear over 3m on soft to heavy off 112, travelling and finishing like a well-handicapped horse. Ran a solid fourth at Gowran next time, shaping as though still in good heart. The chasing experiments can be forgiven; his jumping simply hasn’t stood up to it. But back over hurdles in conditions that suit, he’s a major player and looks capable of going very close again.

Veteran who’s enjoying a real resurgence. Scored over course and distance in January despite being 4 lb out of the handicap, then backed that up with a strong second at Carlisle off 8 lb higher. He’s clearly thriving at present. Up another 2 lb, but with a handy 3 lb claim easing the burden and his current wellbeing hard to knock, he looks a solid each-way contender once again.

Smart, winning hurdler in France and now beginning to find his feet over fences. His three chase runs have come in stronger company than this and, while well beaten, they’ve offered more promise than the bare figures suggest. This is a drop into calmer waters and he’s still unexposed in this discipline. With his French class and scope to improve, he makes far more appeal than a short-priced favourite and looks the value play in the race.

Ex-Irish and shaping as though a win isn’t far away for this yard. Only caught late at Musselburgh over 3m last month on drying ground, travelling strongly and looking the likely winner for much of the straight. That was a big run at 18-1 and suggested he’s thriving. Runs off the same mark here but with a very handy 10 lb claim from Dominic Hislop, which effectively makes him look well treated. On just his third start for the stable, he ticks a lot of boxes and sets a solid standard.

Tough and proven stayer who landed the 3m4f Cork National in November and followed up with a solid third over 3m6f at Fairyhouse. Forgive the latest run in a Naas Grade 3 novice; that was a deeper race and didn’t quite pan out. While it’s been a long time since he went over hurdles, he’s lightly raced in this sphere and clearly relishes a stamina test on this ground. With a handy 7 lb claim and proven staying power, he’s far from dismissed and could make his presence felt at a fair price.

Irish raider with a bit of upside, having won a bumper and a maiden hurdle over 2m 3f earlier in the season. Things haven’t quite clicked since, including a stiff assignment at Cheltenham and a run over 2m 6f with a tongue-tie that’s now discarded. The return to a more suitable trip and the headgear coming off could easily spark a rebound. As a saver at each-way prices, he makes plenty of sense if bouncing back to his earlier form.

Progressive sort who won a bumper at Market Rasen before landing a novice hurdle at Catterick in November. Looked better again when a close second over the same course and distance last time, pulling well clear with the winner and leaving the rest 20 lengths behind. That reads stronger than it first appears. Still unexposed over hurdles and open to further improvement, he’s fully entitled to be towards the head of the market and looks the one they all have to match.

Fairyhouse winner over 2m 4f last season and now back in calmer waters after contesting stronger races. Although 11 lb higher than for that success, he’s beginning to look attractively weighted on his better hurdle form. His recent chase runs can be forgiven in deeper company, and a return to this sort of test could easily spark improvement. At double-figure odds he makes plenty of each-way appeal and looks capable of outrunning his price.

Still searching for a first win over fences, but her latest fourth at Market Rasen after a short break was a fair step back in the right direction. She kept on in a race that has bits of substance to it. That run should have brought her forward fitness-wise. She needs a little more, but at around 9s she looks overpriced in an open race and makes solid each-way appeal if building on that recent effort.

Gained a deserved success at Sedgefield on Boxing Day over 2m and has since filled the runner-up spot three times, including another solid effort there over 2m3f last time. He keeps turning up and running his race. In this sort of company he’s a dependable yardstick and looks sure to be thereabouts again.

The absence is a small question, though she’s low-mileage and still open to progress. This looks a workable mark in suitable company and, with the extra yardage likely in her favour, she’s firmly in the mix.

Did well to finish third here at Christmas in a steadily run race that didn’t suit, then held his own in Grade 2 company at the DRF. Now over hurdles for Gordon Elliott, he looks ready to strike. Sets the standard and should take plenty of beating.
