Carrig Padraig

If you're looking to oppose the favourite and get some good each-way value, then Carrig Padraig would be one to consider. Horse, jockey, and trainer are in good form. That alone ticks many boxes. However, the stable has a good record in this race, winning this contest last year after dropping in class when impressively winning by a large margin in Fairyhouse. The fact that the race was a bumper showed this bay gelding has stamina and pace. If he can get over the hurdles, he will be a big challenge to the Willie Mullins horse. Too good to ignore and gets my NB.

Powerful Paddy from the all-conquering Willie Mullins stable put on a pleasing performance on his seasonal debut at Thurles. Ridden by his son Paddy Mullins, he has been showing promise over the hurdles and has shown both stamina and pace from his bumper days. Should like the distance and going. Very strongly fancied and gets my NAP.

Eremenko showed speed and stamina on debut in a bumper event. She was OK but did not run as expected on the previous two runs. That was when the stable was out of form. Now the stable is flying. This five-year-old bay mare by the classy Walk in the Park looks the one they all have to beat.

Fates Gambit is a good one if you look to take on the favourites in this very open race. With tempting odds, this three-year-old bay gelding can be forgiven for a lacklustre performance last time out but was very impressive on debut. Put a line through the Dundalk race. All must be forgiven for letting down favourite backers on his second appearance. When you take form into consideration along with healthy odds at each-way value, it would be wise to follow.

Cotton Socks looks good each-way value if you want to oppose the favourite with an each-way safety net. From the Lucinda Wadham yard, this four-year-old brown gelding has impressed on bumper experience and now switches to hurdles. Has proven pace and stamina and loves the ground.

Currently joint favourite as I make my comment, Secret Des Dieux will most probably end up as clear favourite closer to post time. After dropping down in Grade company, this six-year-old bay gelding destroyed his rivals by an incredible thirteen lengths at Huntingdon. This is the perfect distance for him. Other positives are that he loves the ground, has Sean Bowen riding him, and comes from the in-form James Owen yard. What's not to like? Strongly fancied

If you're looking to oppose the favourite, you can do no wrong by selecting Gavin Sheehan's six-year-old bay gelding Its Top. Brilliant when winning in style at Carlisle after dropping in class. Can run well at any distance. The yard are back in form and he is ridiculously overpriced. Strongly advise getting the price with a Best Odds Guaranteed bookmaker that also gives extra places. Should be, and may well end up, shorter odds.

Keep Him Company could finish a great day for Gordon Elliott. He already has a good record in this bumper. Jazzy Matty gets the nod here, opposing the favourite only just. He is looking to retain his crown after an impressive win in the same race last year. Favori De Champdou should bring a smile back to Gordon Elliott after a disappointing day one at Cheltenham. Final Orders is a good alternative to the favorite when looking for each-way value and playing it safe. Gavin Cromwell's ten-year-old bay gelding has both pace and stamina. He's by Derby winner Camelot. He had a disappearing run last time, but that was when the stable were not in form and the ground did not suit. Now the stable is showing signs of returning to form and the ground is to his liking. He could give the trainer two wins in a row for this particular race. Storm Heart, unbeaten this year and trained by the all-conquering Willie Mullins, looks good value for money here. In a race that will likely have extra places with most bookmakers and at odds worthy of each-way, this six-year-old bay gelding should make it two years in a row for his yard in this race. He showed guts and sheer determination to win at Gowran Park, and with ground that will suit at odds of 13/2, he cannot be ignored.

Although I have chosen the favourite, anything can happen in a race, as we saw in last season's Champion Hurdle. Sometimes the most obvious horse can get beat. That is why I like, Final Demand should certain boxes be ticked, to look for each-way value so you can feel comfortable when selecting Willie Mullins' charge. Unlike Gordon Elliott, Willie Mullins had a good start to day one of Cheltenham, winning the Champion Hurdle ??" the big race of the day. With such differing luck between the two trainers, the right choice would be to follow three-time Grade 1 winner Final Demand, never out of the first three, not disappointing when third in his last race and on ground that did not suit last time out, he should not be ignored.

Romeo Coolio

Romeo Coolio can lift unlucky trainer Gordon Elliott after calamities and sheer bad luck cost him more than one winner on day one. A classy horse by super sire Kayf Tara, this seven-year-old bay gelding is unbeaten in all four of his starts this season. He showed courage and determination to stick his neck out and hold off all challengers in a very competitive Irish Arkle last time out. This ground should be ideal.

No Drama This End

Daily Racing

No Drama This End can get 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls along with his soon-to-be-departing jockey Harry Cobden off the mark. Unbeaten in all three of his starts this season and winning five of his six races, this grey gelding is a worthy favourite. By Walk in the Park, winner of a Grade 1 at Newbury in a tough race, he should love the ground and the distance should suit.

Sober

Sober and King Rasko Grey both look formidable challenges to the impressive favourite. As Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden both appear to be in sketchy form, you may want to look elsewhere for value for money on each-way claims and preferably extra places. This narrows it down to the aforementioned duo, and if I have to choose one of them it would be the latter. Sober has speed and pace on his side, being by Derby winner Camelot. This is accompanied by yesterday's in-form Champion Hurdle winner Willie Mullins, along with the fact that this horse is unbeaten in both his starts, at a ridiculously overpriced 13/2 in a race that will also feature extra places with many bookies. I could go on, and I will a bit more if you are still not convinced: he won and outclassed his rivals in a Grade 2 at Punchestown by an impressive margin. On top of that, he won a Group 2 on the flat as well. I will be shocked if this horse does not tumble in price as the race approaches post time.

Newton Tornado for Rebecca Curtis gets the nod from me over favourite Kurasso Blue. This seven-year-old bay gelding won two of his four starts this season. He was unfortunate when falling on his debut this season and can be forgiven for being pulled up in his penultimate race, where nothing really went right for him. His trainer has schooled him well, getting his confidence back over fences, and he is now jumping for fun. He also likes the ground, which is another plus for a horse with lots of positives and really should be shorter odds than he currently is. Remember to get best odds guaranteed and go for bookmakers offering as many extra places as possible.

Down Mexico Way can get the combination of Henry de Bromhead and Darragh O'Keeffe off to a winning start on day one of Cheltenham 2026. This seven-year-old chestnut gelding was very impressive when winning a big handicap at Gowran Park. Disappointing when stepping up in class last time out, but looks suited by the distance and ground in a very open race here. Excellent each-way value. It's almost impossible to avoid Lossiemouth. Despite her having such tough competition, she keeps finding and tries her heart out with that winning mentality. The last race was disappointing in the Irish Champion Hurdle ??" she hated the ground, running on the spot as if in treacle, and the distance didn't suit. Kargese is my each-way value of the day. It will most probably be shorter odds closer to post time, so it's best to get the price early with Best Odds Guaranteed and an extra-places bookie. It's either Nicky Henderson or Willie Mullins who will start the first few races with winners. For Willie Mullins, his first-string horses are seemingly over the odds, and it would be crazy to avoid his horses with prices posing such great each-way value. Kargese would and should be much shorter odds. This price will tumble if his trainer wins the opening race.
