Opal Storm has won three times on the turf, but this mare is yet to make the frame in five starts on the AW. She only made her AW debut last September when she finished a close-up fourth off a 4 lb higher mark. In her four runs since, she has had no luck in running; hence she hasn't built on that initial AW run. With a clear run today, she could outrun her big odds, as she did on AW debut when a 40-1 long shot.

Gordon Elliott has had a Festival to forget, but he has a couple of good chances in this. He had last year's third in the race and Chemical Energy, who has been running at the Festival for a number of years now. This horse started off his Festival career with a down-the-field run in the bumper. The next year he ran well in the Martin Pipe Hurdle. He was runner-up in the Amateurs' Chase in 2023. He missed the following year as he had a crack at the Grand National. Last year he ran well enough in the Cross Country but finished tired. He had a couple of Point-to-Point wins in readiness for his fifth Festival attempt, and he has the credentials to finally gain his first win at the Festival.

Willie Mullins won this last year and has won four of the last ten runnings. He has a strong bunch in the field again, including the current favourite, but Espresso Milan has strong claims too. This horse has won both his runs over hurdles, over 2m and 2m 6f, but he is bred to do better over further, so more improvement can be expected over this longer trip.

Kai Lung is one of the lesser-fancied Mullins runners, but they won last year's race with a 100-1 shot. This French import won on stable debut for Mullins with an all-the-way success. He had this year's Fred Winter Hurdle winner Saratoga back in third, so that was a solid debut effort.

@+350

Willie Mullins has won 5 of the last 6 runnings of the Triumph Hurdle and saddles 7 of the front 10 in the betting, so it looks like another Mullins winner, but which one? Most of the past winners have been from the more fancied runners, but last year saw a 100-1 shot win. Selma De Vary is the choice of Paul Townend, and this filly could be the best of the Mullins runners. A typical French import for the trainer, chucked into the deep end on stable debut in a Grade 1 hurdle against a stablemate who had previously won a Grade 2 hurdle, she ran a gallant second that day, and she looks the one to beat.

Olympic Man

Daily Racing

100 WINNAP

@+12500

Lose

-100

Olympic Man is having his first start for John McConnell and is wearing cheekpieces for the first time, which hopefully can make a difference to this horse's jumping. He is a huge price because jumping errors have let him down badly. He was well thought of when trained by Willie Mullins, finishing runner-up in a Listed handicap hurdle in 2024. Last year over fences he was aimed at the Bet365 Gold Cup and the Galway Plate, and was even sent off favourite for last year's Scottish Grand National, but each time was let down by mistake after mistake. Most recent form for Mullins was a couple of flat runs, then a couple of poor runs over hurdles, so he has plenty to improve on for his new yard. While this horse is most likely to struggle if he doesn't get his act together on the jumping front, given his price he looks worth a little punt.

Champagne Chic has won three of his eight runs over hurdles, and his last two runs have shown he is still improving. His latest run was an easy win at Haydock in a qualifier for this. A repeat of that run, or better, should see him go close in what looks a wide-open handicap.

Letos

-100

Letos was well beaten last time on his latest run, but that came in a Grade 1. He had previously bagged his place in this when runner-up at Carlisle in a qualifier. That qualifier was his first try over this trip, which came on soft going. He should find this trip easier on this sounder surface. This horse has shown he has some class and is still unexposed at this trip; hence his price tag.

Gordon Elliott has had little to shout about over the first two days of this year's Festival, with just a couple of seconds from almost 30 runners. Wodhooh can cheer up the team, as this was probably their banker of the meeting. This mare was originally with Sir Michael Stoute on the flat but never achieved much in four runs. Since she moved to Elliott she has been a revelation, winning 9 from 10 over hurdles. She has only lost to Lossiemouth, who won this year's Champion Hurdle. She has previous experience at the Festival: last year she won the Martin Pipe Hurdle before running second to Lossiemouth in the Grade 1 hurdle at Aintree.

Charme De Faust may be the second string of the Mullins runners, but this filly will be running on her own merits and could be capable of a bold showing. She is a French import who has had just one run for the Mullins team, which was an impressive wide-margin win in a maiden hurdle. That race might not appear to be strong, but it had some decent runners in it, and the trainer must feel she is up to running well in this.

Big Nelson showed nothing on debut last year at Churchill Downs, but that came in a $50K claimer. Needs a further step forward, but given these conditions I'd expect him to get more involved, and he looks good value for money.

The Mourne Rambler is the selection in a classy-looking bumper, in which many of these have strong claims. This horse ran second in a PtP last autumn, then had his first run for Noel Meade on Boxing Day at Leopardstown in what looked a strong bumper. He made a winning stable debut in that bumper and did it in good style, also in a decent time given the going. He has been rested since that win in readiness for this race, and his claims are as strong as any of his rivals.

Willie and Danny Mullins teamed up to land this race last year, and in Storm Heart they have a very good chance of winning this year's renewal. This horse has had seven runs for Mullins since moving over from France and has been performing at a high level. His worst run was when he finished fifth in last year's Triumph Hurdle. He has twice run well behind stablemate Kargese, who is the 3rd favourite for the Arkle. Kargese has won three times and been runner-up in a Listed handicap hurdle.

Gordon Elliott saddles the top two in the handicap, and Jack Kennedy has opted for the more fancied Down Memory Lane. He may be right, but I'd still side with the top weight Dee Capo, who, when on a going day, is more than capable. The handicapper has taken no chances with French import Harwa, who won on his Irish debut with an easy, wide-margin victory in a Fairyhouse maiden hurdle. While he is hard to assess on the back of that win, he has the ideal-looking pedigree for this contest and has the potential to be better than a handicapper. Including handicaps at this level, he could easily turn out to be a Graded winner in the future.

A very competitive final, so I will take two in this race. Funnily enough, these two started their careers against each other in an Irish PtP, where they finished 1st and 2nd with just a short head between them. Race To Base has won a bumper and a hurdle since his PtP win but will need more to win this. He should be suited by the step up in trip and the likely stronger pace.
