Didn't show much in the first three runs in maidens, but on handicap debut, had a good midfield finish despite a slow start. Drops back a furlong today, so will need to be sharper out of the gate, but the slower ground should help.

Nutcracker has a similar profile to our big-priced winner yesterday, so maybe worth taking another punt with an unexposed runner. This 3yo had three AW runs over the winter within the space of a month and showed no progress but got a lowly mark of 57 for handicap debut. Trainer Tony Carroll had a 100-1 winner with Time Patrol, who won on handicap debut after three modest runs. The sire Outstrip has also provided a similar shock winner with Monks Mead, who was last on the first three runs then made a winning handicap debut at 150-1.

When trained in France, he won on debut as a 3-year-old for André Fabre, joined Archie Watson, and went on to win on the first run of last year. Went up 8 lb for that win, and in three subsequent runs, failed to progress but had excuses. Any further rain shouldn't hinder his chances, as he won on soft ground in France.

While his chances look slim on what he has achieved so far, he is bred to be better, related to some good types, and on pedigree, should do better this season.

Split Silk has proved very disappointing, but this filly is well-related and bred to be better than what she has shown to date. She has shown a little ability, but in all her 5 starts, she has been slow to stride. Her first 4 starts came over 7f, which on pedigree is a trip too short. So when stepped up to 10f last time, more was expected, as she was backed at big odds. However, another slow start saw her always out the back. With a level break, she could easily step up on previous efforts.

Exceeding returns from a 6-month layoff, but if he is fit and ready to go on his return, he could finally shed his maiden tag after 18 starts. The first three runs came on the AW, well beaten in the first two, then ran a good 4th behind two longshots, and the handicapper punished him with a crippling opening mark of 75. So, no surprise that he found life tough when sent handicapping. The handicap mark is now at a more realistic level and showed some ability at the end of last season when 3rd on the AW. He failed to back up that run in two subsequent runs but did have a tough schedule last year.
