Roger Teal's Northwest Passage is an 11-race maiden who has placed fairly consistently. Ordinarily, I wouldn't back this type unless it was an each-way price, but the only time the selection ran on soft conditions (debut), he traveled very well and finished a decent third. He has those conditions tonight, and this looks like a weak race.

Very valid excuses include poor draws, bad luck in running, and stamina. But based on running style and today's conditions, I think she has a lot in her favor and rates an excellent each way bet.

The Irish Raider representing Twomey is very interesting. I'm sure he wouldn't be here if the trainer didn't think he had an excellent chance. She is a frontrunner who won over 6f twice and was only just run down late on over 7f. I'd be more confident if this was a furlong shorter, but the trainer is a smart guy, so I'll put my trust in both.

Other than the no-show in the Derby, which is a track I really don't rate and often good horses can't handle its quirkiness, Delacroix has been extremely good and progressive. He beat Ombudsman last time, and I expect him to confirm that again. I have had a saver on the Japanese raider who looks sure to go well but is still hard to weigh up.

As a four-time course and distance winner, White Umbrella has to be considered here. After winning twice here in June over 5f/6f, she has since been 9th of 11 on turf, which can be excused. She carries 6lb more for the last win and has a poor draw, but at the price, I have to have a little nibble.

A couple of years ago, Nostrum was a highly rated horse who seemed to be destined for a high-flying career. He finished second in the Dewhurst and produced very creditable displays in top-quality races. But he suddenly lost that enthusiasm for Michael Stoute and went backwards. He has since joined the very canny O'Meara stable and had 3 mediocre runs. However, this selection's handicap debut, and I wouldn't put it past the trainer to have him ready to put in an improved effort.

With a likely 4 places available, I'm very hopeful.
