This is one of those. What we have with Ready Freddie Go is a runner who, if in the mood and holding any type of previous top form back, can and will defeat this field. But it has to be said, the past couple of outings have looked less than certain about how to go about the job. But I'm not so sure it has deserted him entirely. He is now on a mark that can surely reap rewards. Won off much higher this time last year, and even a runner-up spot in better class two outings ago at Ripon shows the spark is there somewhere. The bottom line is, this is speculative and trying to take advantage of what is a big price should previous ability come to the fore once again.

Slightly on the drift, which makes this even better value today. I'm not going to go as far as to suggest we might be laid out for this today, but a poor break last time here, and well beaten, is not a reflection of the ability. As such, this Easterby charge might be slightly under the radar. Might prefer to see a 1 in the form column a little more recent than available, but Fancy Dancer might be reaching limits right now, and Lady Boquet may have had her day. The form of the 6th August run here is working out already, and in what looks pretty open, the price is of interest.

A juicy opener as a good-looking Arsenal side travels to Old Trafford to give Manchester United's fresh-looking team a stern test on day 1. United have without doubt upgraded the attacking element of the squad, but it comes with no guarantee of success against a solid-looking Gunners squad, which has also been, what looks like, effectively strengthened as genuine title contenders this season. I am not confident the Red Devils will breach the Arsenal defense, and the visitors won't have to score more than a brace for the three points.

15:00 Bradford v Luton

Luton

Bradford offered nothing in a goalless draw last week. Whilst gaining home advantage now, they have to face the best squad in the division. Luton's last couple of seasons have been nothing to write home about, obviously, but they are better than virtually any other side at this level and won't often be odds against, home or away. Purely a value pick on a tricky day in League One.

15:00 Dorking v Hampton & Richmond

Dorking

Dorking kick off the home games this season in what should be a straightforward game against Hampton and Richmond. Dorking were put to the test last week, and some lazy legs were on show in the first half before a spirited and impressive comeback to share the points. Marc White will have them ready, that's for sure, and I can see 2 or 3 goals setting up a comfortable first three points of the season.
12:30 Portsmouth v Norwich

Portsmouth

Norwich opened their campaign by hosting Millwall and going down pointless to a late Lions winner. One has the feeling Liam Manning may not be the answer to Championship survival for Norwich, and a trip to Portsmouth, I would imagine, is not the ideal follow-up to day one defeat. Counterpart manager Mousinho has constructed a fairly fresh team at Fratton Park, with Segicic looking a lively addition up front who could cause teams issues this season. Outside of the starting squad last week, however, there look to be frailties, so any absence would temper enthusiasm. But with virtually the entire first team squad rested for mid-week EFL Cup defeat, it looks like Pompey are playing to their home advantage much as they did last season with some success. Home win for me on this basis.

12:30 Wrexham v West Brom

Wrexham

I'm going in on Wrexham again this week, after chancing my luck on them at St Mary's on opening day when two late goals scuppered what might have been a nice return. On the whole, they look a good outfit, and back at home, hosting a West Brom side who, whilst decent, have a pitted away record last season, might still provide a value price. West Brom picked up three points at home in game one, against a Blackburn side that offered nothing with just one shot on target. They'll face much more than today and may not stave off the steam train that has been constructed and continues to roll on, strengthened and enthused. Wrexham can take advantage of a poor travelling record of the Baggies.

It's the lucky last at Thirsk where we go with a trainer in form and a horse not so much, but who has slipped to a winning mark. Arundel will be a warm favourite, and whilst it should stay the 12 furlongs, there are no guarantees. Small field, lots of chances, Jedd O'Keefe in form. Let's go with Prince.

Has already drifted from 2/1 out to 7/2 this morning. On that basis, the price has to represent value if that is support of other runners rather than a known issue with the selection. Has flattened out form-wise, but has consistent finishes fighting for the win and has conditions to suit.

Kisskodi didn't get the best of it last time out, and in doing so, was never at the races. Returning to Epsom and dropping back to what might be a preferred 6f sticks him at the head of the market. A lot of hype about Winged Messenger's chance of landing back-to-back wins, but CD form on this straight can be a significant advantage.

Both players come off deciding frames to get here, with Hawkins taking out Ding but Wakelin defeating current world champion Zhao Xingtong, which must provide some serious confidence. Wakelin remains, for me, the hardest working pro on the circuit, and despite only winning once against his opponent in the past, we have to go back to 2021 for the last meeting between the pair. Since then, he has risen from 43rd ranked to a current 15th. Have to take the price in this match-up.

Wilson leads the head-to-head v Ronnie, having won 8 of their 15 meetings. Whilst in those games, Ronnie has the better frame-wise with 84-70. What this suggests is the tide has turned significantly recently. In fact, Wilson has won each of the last 5 matches by at least 2 clear frames. Quite simply, his measured approach seems to have the better of O'Sullivan, including a 5-3 quarter-final win in Shanghai last month. Wilson will pick balls off the table and prevent any fluidity, as is his want, and this may be more comfortable than odds of 1.75 suggest it might be.

Nothing flash today as we wait for the closer at Salisbury and King of the Sea to reappear under Tom Marquand in an attempt to follow up on a win at Haydock last time after being well back. The shorter price today may prevent a plunge. Still, for my book, the Walker charge should be odds on, so a shade of 11/10 looks value for yet another favourite pick. After naming a 14/1 winner as a danger in a small field yesterday, I'll refrain from talking another one in for this race.

Sheffield United advertised their defensive frailties on day one of the league season, and Birmingham can match Bristol City in terms of attack. So the Blades will do remarkably well to keep a clean sheet. With that in mind, if they can bring the same possession but this time convert what they could last weekend, then they too can get on the scoresheet. Cup games are too unpredictable to call 1x2, but this looks like goals are coming, and I expect both to contribute to the final scoreline, whoever progresses.

A tentative pick in a small field at Ffos Las this evening, in a race that has the potential to throw up a little surprise. Although the ten pounds Jagetme is getting from the pick from their last meeting shouldn't be enough to reverse form. The key here is form with Hello Luna arriving with plenty of it when all around seem to have little. Last won at Windsor but looks to have been found a race to follow up after two subsequent defeats.

Getting tricky to find any value as the field narrows in Saudi Arabia, but we can eke out a little bit in this game between Wilson and Jiahui. The former world champion has been pretty dominant in the 8 matches the pair have played, winning 6. But in terms of total frames, Jiahui has always given a good account with the exception of a whitewash in the 2023 German Masters. Arguably, Si is a more experienced and better player now, and the last two meetings have seen a decider, including a 6-5 for Wilson in Shanghai. A close call again, not sure which way it will go but betting Si goes close enough even in defeat.

Don't know what's going on with picking favorites right now, but I've another on Offiahs Boy here at Salisbury who has been on a bit of a winning streak, latterly over 12f at Bath. This will require yet more to emerge victorious, but I'll never not notice gameness. If it comes down to sticking a neck out, the Tickle Charge could fight it out. Biggest fear for me is Albus Annie who will be staying on and will have a better chance of the clear run in this field, a factor denied last time out.

Off to Hamilton to back a favourite tonight as Danger Bay looks to be on a lenient mark for his debut given the form of his maiden, with the runner-up going on to land a decent handicap at Goodwood. I've him priced at 15/8, so 9/4 looks value.

There is no such thing as a dead cert, but seeing Chris Wakelin at 1.29, against what I think would have been a more realistic 1.10 against Farakh Ajaib, we just have to go in. Wakelin is one of the hardest working players when it comes to improvement and the time he puts in to do so. He knows he has still more to do to achieve major honours, but this is the type of event he can focus on and do well, and with all respect to Ajaib, he is not the one to stop him at this stage.

12% return on investment to take the current and new world champion, to roll over the 100th-rated player in this tournament? Yes, please! We all love Thep, right? But if there were prizes for inconsistency, he would be a consistent winner. Despite his 147 in this tournament already, he can make no mistakes against the consistent magician Shaun Murphy. We've moved on to best of 9 now, and the longer the match, the lesser chance F1 has, so Murphy at 1/2 looks like a sensible call.

Zhang is arguably the second-best Chinese player in the game right now, and our advantage is that he still seems to remain a little under the radar, to the bookies at least. To that end, he is officially a better player than Stuart Bingham but is available at a price in this very close match-up that looks like a value pick on price alone. A recent 147 should have his confidence remaining high.

A frequent recent visitor to this course, winning a conditions event and following up with a good 2nd in a handicap a couple of weeks ago, when not getting a clear run. Has to be considered on that basis, although let's not forget most of this lineup will also be very familiar with the course. The 5lb claim will play its part, and better than 5/2 looks a good entry point.

Not a lot to think about here today. Sheffield Wednesday are in a complete state coming into the new season. Whilst Leicester will very much have an eye on making a good start to their promotion campaign, they will be looking to impale a greater tally to wins on Wednesday visits, which stands at 3 of the last 4. Leicester have started well in the last seasons, unbeaten on opening day, and I don't see that being broken today.

Matthew Stevens has returned to some good form of late, and it's long overdue - he is a very solid player at this stage of tournaments, it's when the cameras turn on that he seems to struggle. David Grace can have his day too and does have a recent win over Ricky Walden in the bag, so he can't be discounted, but Stevens can be such an effective one-visit player and should come out on top.

My third and final pick for an away win on the opening day in the Championship comes at Carrow Road, where Millwall have practically a full squad at their disposal and 2,000 travelling fans ready to pack the away end. Liam Manning has his new side prepared but has certainly had a tougher time of it in pre-season, winning only once, while Millwall are in the habit with 4 wins in 5.

This is an age-old rivalry and one of the most anticipated games of the season for both sets of fans. They've met 26 times in 12 years. Expect Portsmouth to come out all guns blazing. But don't expect goals; this is perennially a tight affair. Portsmouth played 7 pre-season games, scoring 17 and not conceding once. Pompey won 2-0 on the last visit. This will be close, under 2.5 goals, as the teams who finished almost matched last season kick off the season.

The price on Moody is short enough but he has a solid start to the season, losing just once to Elliot Slessor in which there is no shame. Highfield also has what looks like good wins against Stuart Bingham and Fan Zhengyi on the CV for the season already, but Moody's play has been really solid tactically and should have the edge in this contest.
