Wattimena was in great form at the beginning of the season. I feel like he was the best Dutch darter at that moment. That form slacked a bit, but at the Players Championship he got back in form at just the right time. He averaged 100+ in three of his games there and reached the semi-finals. He'll meet Gruellich, a relatively unknown German darter. He qualified through the Pro Tour Order of Merit and averaged 96 in one of his World Youth Championship games. His seasonal average of 89.10 is about five points lower than Wattimena's, but if he plays his best level, I feel like he could grab a set. Wattimena can have patches of incredible darts but can be a bit inconsistent.

Wattimena certainly is the better player here, and his seasonal average of 94 is about five points above that of his German opponent. However, the German youngster showed good form at the Youth World Championship and should be able to grab a set here against a rather inconsistent Wattimena.

Joyce has had a pretty good record here over the past few years, always getting past the first round and averaging 100+ in multiple games. However, over the course of the season his 92.78 average is only slightly higher than the 88.79 of Bates, who beat players like Searle and Bunting in the most recent Players Championship events. It will be interesting to see how well Bates handles the pressure of playing on the biggest stage against an experienced player like Joyce. But it will also be interesting to see which Joyce will turn up here. Will it be the 100+ average giant killer who has gone deep in a couple of big tournaments? Or will he feel uncomfortable being a big favorite here? The seasonal stats make this a great value play for me.

Rydz has been in mixed form this season, but is still the better player here. The odds to win the game are too low, though. Instead, I like the odds on most 180s better. Rydz is a solid scorer and hits 0.30 maximums per leg on average this season, compared to only 0.15 for his Hungarian opponent. Kovács has been scoring less heavily even in the last three months, with an average of 0.09 180s per leg.

Ridiculous odds here on Bellmont for me. Barney is a legend of the sport, but he hasn't performed at a high level for some years now. Of course he'll have the crowd (the Barney Army) behind him, and we'll have to see how the Swiss will deal with that, this being only his second appearance on this stage. However, Barney only just won more than half of his games this season, and even though he averaged about five points more than Bellmont this season (91.50 vs. 86.82), I feel like he'll get back to the self-pity once things don't start going the way he wants. For Bellmont this was kind of his breakthrough year, qualifying for the Grand Slam where he beat Wade and also winning the Challenge Tour. Anything over 2.70 is big value here in my opinion.

This could turn out to be a great game if both players can play their best darts. The only problem is they have only shown it in patches this season. Pietreczko won the German Darts Championship in 2023 and also had some good runs on big stages, but not this season. At the European Championship he did reach the quarter-final, but that was his only real run on the big stage. Here at Ally Pally, he might also get the crowd against him, which could cause him to lose composure as it did before. This season he seems to deal better with the crowds, though, and last year he surprisingly beat Van Veen in the second round. De Sousa had an even worse season. He couldn't qualify for any big tournament, and even though he scored well at the UK Open, he didn't really put a run together. He even had to come through qualifiers, where he averaged well over 90 in all games. However, over the course of the season it's the German who has the better average (91.09 vs. 88.54).

Not much between these two, as Hood averaged just one point higher than Kenny over the course of the season. Hood has been a bit more consistent, bringing him to this World Championship for the first time ranked 25th on the Pro Tour Order of Merit. For Kenny, it's his 4th appearance at Ally Pally, and last year he beat Buntz and van Barneveld. I feel like this could go either way. For me, any odds over 2.30 is value here.

I feel like there is some value with Manby here, who qualified finishing 4th on the Development Tour. He averaged about 3 points lower than Menzies this season but has been in great form in the past 3 months, averaging 91.31. Menzies showed some form in patches this season which got him to the World Grand Prix quarter-final. But he has also been very inconsistent and still seems to struggle to get his emotions under control on big stages. On this stage he actually never managed to average over 90 and won only 2 games in 3 participations. Manby has no experience on these big stages, but certainly is one of the better young players of the moment.

Brooks has had a better average (93.20) over the season than Cullen (91.77), but the difference is very small. Cullen has had a very poor season with no runs at the big stages. He did get far in some floor tournaments, but confidence won't be high coming into this. He didn't feel 'respected' by the bookies here last year, as he stated after his surprising whitewash win over Nijman. These odds don't give him much respect either against youngster Brooks, who is a very solid player but hasn't shown much on big stages either. This will only be Brooks's 3rd appearance here at Ally Pally, compared to the 16th appearance for Cullen. I feel this is a closer matchup than these odds suggest.

Mason established himself as a consistent top racer this season, but not as consistent as Vanthourenhout, who is first in the UCI rankings. While this track might suit Mason well, Vanthourenhout is one of the most in-form riders right now and was dominant in his win in Italy last week.

Will be interesting to see if Van der Poel will be dominant from the start or Nys will be able to stay on his wheel. I think he is capable of doing so if he is at his best. That's also the reason I'm not betting on the outright in this one. Nys won his last three races and looked very good doing so. Nieuwenhuis has had some good results this season and even won three races, but the recent form is clearly in favor of Nys.

Brand is in excellent form, winning her last five races. It's hard to predict the form of the other two main contenders. Alvarado didn't finish her last race due to sickness, and for Pieterse it will be her first race of the season. Brand finished in front of Pieterse in most of their meetings at the end of last season and is in even better form right now. On top of that, Pieterse has been doing a lot of mountain biking, which means she hasn't had much time to focus on cyclo-cross.

Going with the value on Tata, who is the DPNZ Pro Tour winner and averaged in the high 80s this season. In the World Series he got knocked out in the first round by Ross Smith, and this will be his Ally Pally debut. He is an established name on the local circuit, and at the BDO he reached the Lakeside quarter-final. Edhouse has a season average in the low 90s, so there is not that much between them. After winning the European Championship he couldn't show the same level of consistency, and in his last three participations here he never averaged over 90 and didn't win a single game. Not that Tata is the favourite to win here, but at these odds he is a good value bet.
