Charlton

I'm not totally convinced high-flying Coventry are as special as the league table shows. They trailed 0-2 at home to West Brom last week, and though they came back to win 3-2, they were helped by the visitors stupidly having a man sent off. At 7/1 Charlton are worth a go. Three defeats in a row does not look great, but they are a capable side at this level and should not be that price.

Derby

Derby sit 2nd, only behind Coventry, in the current form league table (last 6 matches), while Middlesbrough are way down in 18th. This rather makes a mockery of the odds quoted for the hosts here, so priced at just over 4/1, Derby look a very good bet regardless of how the game goes today.

Swansea

Way down in 17th place, West Brom are undoubtedly in a false position but continually keep shooting themselves in the foot. They threw a two-goal lead away at leaders Coventry last week, and also lost at Ipswich where building from the back cost them the only goal. They could and should win this, but so prone are they to errors I wouldn't be putting my hard-earned on them at odds-on and will risk a few shekels on Swansea instead. The Swans have lost five of their last six matches, but all against teams superior to the Baggies.

Oxford and Ipswich seem to be going in different directions, both in the current league table and the current form table. This fact alone sways me towards Oxford who, while not one of the leading lights in the division, are capable of putting in good performances as they showed when drawing 1-1 with high-flying Middlesbrough at the weekend. At just over 3/1, they look well worth a punt.

Despite looking like a very physical outfit, I didn't see any excuse for Stoke's 1-2 defeat to Leicester at the weekend, where the Foxes' match winner was a striker who had gone nearly a year since last scoring. At short odds, Stoke looks worth taking on here with a Charlton side who will be smarting following their 1-5 home defeat by Southampton on Saturday. They are a capable enough side at this level and have beaten both Ipswich and Blackburn 3-0 this season already. They will be eager to prove that the Southampton defeat was just one of those days...

Birmingham are comfortably in mid-table, but that will be considered an underachievement given their hopes at the start of the season. They have been impressive at home recently, beating both Portsmouth and Millwall 4-0, but showed they are by no means infallible when losing last time at Middlesborough. Norwich, in contrast, sit in a relegation position and sacked their manager after a 1-2 home defeat by Leicester. Actually, before they took the lead in that game, Norwich had looked the better side, but trying to sit on that lead proved their downfall. They are not as bad a side as the league table suggests, and the 9/2 quote looks fair.

So here we have probably the most overrated team in the division playing the most underrated, and that's why the odds on an away win are so high. Now, I am not knocking Ipswich. They are a decent side, and it's not their fault the bookies keep pricing them up so short. But the facts don't lie, and they do sit outside the playoff zone, even if it's only just. Wrexham, in contrast, are mid-table, just two points behind the hosts. The current form league table (over the last 6 matches), however, has Wrexham higher placed than the Tractor Boys. That does not make them certainties, granted, but neither should they be priced at 11/2...

I have watched Swansea a couple of times this season, where they lost comfortably against Man City and Leicester despite being well into those games for long periods. Clearly, they are not getting the results their performances deserve, but that could very well change at Bristol City this afternoon. The hosts are hardly in the best of form, losing 1-5 at Stoke, 1-0 at Blackburn, and most recently gaining a 1-1 draw at Watford. They shouldn't be odds-on to win this.

It's easy to see why Coventry are hot favourites here. They sit top of the league and lead the current form table also, and while they look very much the percentage call to win this, it doesn't mean that their odds are value to do so. At 4/1, West Brom look a tad bigger price than they should. I saw them lose narrowly at Ipswich, where playing out from the back cost them dear. The game was very even before that. The Baggies are no mugs and it's a local derby too, so they shouldn't be discounted quite as lightly as the prices suggest.
