20:00 Canada v Bosnia Herzegovina

Hosts Canada will want to get off to a winning start here, but in a group that Switzerland are likely to top, finishing second may be a more realistic target. That changes the mindset from 'must win' to 'don't lose', and I can see Bosnia providing stubborn opposition. Recent games against similar-level European sides have ended in draws (1-1 v Ireland, 2-2 v Iceland) and Bosnia themselves are fond of drawn games: both of their play off matches (v Italy and Wales) ended in stalemates, as did two recent friendlies against North Macedonia and Panama. I think the market will be expecting a Canadian win here, but with star man Alphonso Davies likely to be missing through injury, I'd be more inclined to back both sides settling for a point.

03:00 South Korea v Czechia

Both of these sides will probably be targetting second place in a group that Mexico are likely to top. Therefore, not losing will become more important than winning in teh first round of matches. There's not a great deal to choose between them either. South Korea are the higher ranked country, but they're a difficult team to get a handle on in terms of form. A 0-4 defeat to Ivory Coast in March and a 0-5 loss to Brazil last October point to a team who are going to struggle against more powerful opposition, but they haven't played many European teams recently. The nearest opposition to Czechia they've faced in recent months were Austria (they lost 0-1). Czechia are solid European opposition and they've drawn quite afew games against similar standard countries to themselves: both of their play-off games, against Ireland and Denmark, ended 2-2, and they also managed a 0-0 draw v Croatia. They're not flashy by any means, but I can see them providing the sort of test that South Korea might struggle with. I'm expecting a cagey game here: 0-0 or 1-1 being the final score.

20:00 Mexico v South Africa

Mexico's recent form suggests they're going to be a hard team to get the better of with home advantage: a 5-1 win v Serbia, 1-0 v Australia and 2-0 v Ghana all indicate they'll have too much for a modest South Africa side. The African's recent results suggest they're a level or two below the hosts: losing 1-2 to Panama in March and drawing with Jamaica and Nicaragua in recent warm-ups are not impressive scorelines. There's not a great deal of value here in backing the hosts, but a stress-free 2-0 win is probably on the cards if you want to get an acca off to a good start.
