Stod180

I have been backing horses since Sherwood Forest was a plant pot. From Newcastle and a TOON supporter. I don't have one particular thing that leads me to have a bet, it's all bits of infomation gleaned, plus I don't mind what price it is, if I think I can turn a profit, then I will put it on here and I do back them myself.

Pied Piper

Daily Racing

100 WINNAP

-100

The Gordon Elliott-trained Pied Piper has to concede weight all around, but he is 10 lbs clear on the ratings on a mark of 140. He is by far the best hurdler in this race with a top rating of 157. He won a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle, then finished 3rd in the Triumph Hurdle at the Festival. He is 3 from 3 since taking on the bigger obstacles, and there should be more to come.

Leadman is the final ride of the day for Mr. Buick, and his chance is reasonable judging by the market. The 5-year-old Kingman gelding is up 4 lbs for his win in this grade last time out, but he is still a couple of pounds well in (due to rise 2 lbs in the future). I don't think he will be far away from a good draw in trap 3 (pace setters to track from 5, 7, & 8) and on ground that suits.

Lose

-80

In an open-looking 22 runner Class 2 handicap, I think the high number drawn may struggle, and Rosario, drawn 1, could prove a good each-way punt at around 22's at the time of writing. He has had no luck in his last 3 races: he lost front and rear shoes at Newbury before losing both his front shoes at Windsor. Then last time out at Ascot, his young jockey Taryn Langley (replaced today by Jim Crowley) couldn’t get his blindfold off, and as a result, he was very slowly away. He’s down to a mark of 93, which is a pound lower than when winning over course and distance on good ground in May. Providing he can keep his shoes on, then it's game on.

The Joseph O’Brien Irish raider Masoun won his last two races in fine style, taking his mark up to a career-high mark of 99. However, I think the 4-year-old Too Darn Hot gelding although he's not very big, he is a battler. He is ground versatile and he has more to come.

I'm having a small each way on Sir Busker at 25's. The William Knight-trained 9-year-old veteran of the race will be held up, which will make his life very difficult, but he has major claims off his current mark of 101, with Brandon Wilkie taking off 3 lbs at this venue. He may not have won in 4 runs here, but he has run consistently well each time, including in Group 2 company. If he gets luck in running, he has the back class to be involved at decent odds.

The Tim Easterby-trained Copper Knight has been a standing dish at York since winning here at his first attempt back in 2017. He added a further six wins to that win over C&D. He is 11 years old now but is arguably having one of his most consistent seasons with figures of 342114 so far. He has, in my opinion, a great draw in 10, and if he can hang on, then it will be win number 18 and eight here over C&D.

I think if Another Baar, who is joint top-rated, races with the handbrake off, then he has a great chance in this Class 6 handicap. He is down in grade and is off a very good mark of 65. The Adrian Keatley-trained 5-year-old Mayson gelding is no world-beater, but he has won a Class 4 handicap off 78. This looks a winnable Class 3 Fillies' Handicap, and the Rod Millman-trained, in-form Santa Savana fits the bill. The 3-year-old Havana Grey filly finished 4th at Leicester a few starts back. That 4th was backed up yet again last week when Prince Of India won. Given Santa Savana is only 3 lbs higher here than at Leicester, she should still be feasibly treated. She has form on fast ground and good to soft, so the ground shouldn’t be an issue. As she likes to be up with the pace, her higher draw is fine.

Michael Dods has 2 in the race and there is not much between the two. I am having a small investment on Midnight Lir. He’s only 4 years old, but he’s spent quite a long time out of form, dropping from a mark of 87 at the start of last season to a career low of 63 last time out. Up 2 lbs for an unlucky 2nd last time out, I think there is plenty of juice left in his mark of 65, and I don't think it will be long before he gets back to winning ways.

The Harry Charlton-trained, Callum Shepherd-ridden Blue Day will relish a stiff 5f on good to firm ground. After a first-time-out win last season, it looked as though the handicapper had his measure. He was dropped to this 5f (here at Ascot) on his second start this season, and it looked the making of him. He traveled well, took advantage of a gap on the rail, and won going away. The 2nd and 6th have come out of that race and won next time out. He was slowly away next time at Haydock and, under the circumstances, did well to finish 2nd (that flat track not playing to his strengths as well as Ascot did). Then he hit the front going well last time out but didn’t get home on softer ground, which seemed to curtail his finishing effort. The 1st, 2nd, and 6th have all won since, so the bare form was pretty good, and he should massively improve for faster ground here.

The George Boughey-trained Bountiful was progressive 2yo, running with credit at Listed and G2 level. Her best performance came at the July meeting, albeit over the 6f trip, in behind horses that subsequently proved themselves at Group level. With the benefit of her recent Ascot run under her belt (despite an inadequate 1m trip being too far), she turns out here in a lesser handicap over 7f on a mark of 95, which is 4lb below her career high mark. There’s every chance that her price underestimates her ability, and I can see her running a big race with Billy Loughnane in the saddle.
