In a very open-looking Class 5 handicap (even the market isn't quite sure), I like Oberon Hill. The Jedd O'Keeffe thrice-raced (finishing 4-2-3) 4-year-old Ribchester gelding went into my tracker in February this year. He finished second, 3.5 lengths in a Class 4 Novice Stakes behind a decent Haggas horse, Regalian, who finished a close-up 1/4 length third next time out in a Class 2 Novice. Oberon Hill gets in his first handicap off bottom weight on an opening mark of just 63. I thought his opening mark would be around 70, so I make him about 7 pounds well in. The hood goes on for the first time, and PJ McDonald is in the saddle. He is up against experienced handicappers, but I think despite his drift in the market, he is worth an each-way play.

Trainer Charlie Appleby and Godolphin have just the two runners anywhere today, and they are both in the same race. Jockey William Buick has only the one ride, Naval Command, which he chose over Urban Warrior (respected). The well-bred, expensive, Lope De Vega 3-year-old colt out of All At Sea (Sea The Stars) was held up in the rear of midfield, outpaced, and pushed along passing halfway. He rallied from 1f out and kept on to finish 4th on debut in a hot maiden over a mile at Kempton. Upped to 10f here should really suit, and I expect him to do the biz on his seasonal debut.

Gaelic Warrior put in a great performance last time out in the Grade 1 Aintree Bowl on his first try at 3m 1f. On the figures, this looks a match between multiple Grade 1 winners: Gaelic Warrior, trained by Willie Mullins, aged 7, and Pic D'Orhy, trained by Paul Nicholls, who is 10 years old. Pic has 8 lbs to find on the ratings with Gaelic off levels today. If they are both on form, the younger of the 2 Gaelic, in my opinion, has the edge.

There are some nicely bred 3yo colts amongst the 7 runners in this Listed Stakes. Not surprisingly, the Boys In Blue have one in Devils Advocate. The 3yo son of Too Darn Hot got off the mark at the 2nd time of asking, winning comfortably over this trip at Chelmsford when last seen 187 days ago. Trainer Charlie Appleby normally has them ready to pop on their seasonal debut.
