The in-form trainer Jack Morland (4/1 winner last night) has a good chance with Saucy Jane. She has a nice draw in trap 6 on this fast straight 5f. I expect a strong pace, and S J with Callum Shepherd in the saddle can sit behind and hopefully pounce late. She was unlucky last time out, but this race could be set up nicely.

In what is a typically competitive handicap with 21 runners, I have it down to about six: Hot Fuss, Joyeuse, Emid'io, Pepe Wellington, Arch Favour and Fortune, and Swindon Village. I think the Charlie Longsdon-trained Swindon Village has been largely overlooked in the betting, so at 40/1 it is my OLBG selection. Swindon Village drops back to 2m 4f after trying to make all in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham. He was still bang in contention at the second last where he made a mistake and his chances were gone. Getting to the front in this line-up over the shorter 2m 4f trip might not be as easy, but I think today's jockey, Jonathan Burke, has the game plan and a big run is anticipated.

Hunter Chases have their own following within the racing community. I don't profess to have the inside lane on who's hot and who's not, but a friend of mine loves this type of race. He is a big fan of Barton Snow and suggested I have a wager on it. It duly obliged at 5/1, tyvm, beating the re-opposing Its On The Line by a diminishing neck over 26.5f. The drop back in trip, ground, and grade will not be a problem. The stable won this race in 2021 and 2025, plus jockey Henry Crow is 2 from 2 in the saddle.

My two against the field are Spycatcher and Montassib. Not very original, but sometimes you have to go where the form and stats take you. Spycatcher won this race on his comeback last year and signed off with a win in the Wentworth Stakes, another course-and-distance Listed contest. Trainer Karl Burke will have him ready for this, and although he would prefer it softer, there will be enough juice in the ground for him to run a big race. Malton trainer Alan Brown loves having winners here. He doesn't have that many in training, probably fewer than 20 at the minute, but don't discount his chance of a winner just because of the price. Alan Brown’s six-year-old returned from a winter break to score over 6f at Thirsk last April and went down narrowly in third place over the same course and distance on his 2024 comeback. He also seems happiest when drawn near a rail, with his three wins for his current trainer coming from stall 11 of 11 at Ripon (6f), 9 of 9 at Thirsk (6f) and 2 of 14 at Leicester (7f). Tonight’s 7f trip might be a shade further than ideal, but he’s drawn closest to the near-side rail in stall 12 of 12. The stalls are far side, but they often come across. I trust Sean Kirrane to do the right thing and grab that stands-side rail. If he does, then he could go close at a big price.
