  • Tips From The Racecourse for Royal Ascot

Ascot in Berkshire is one of the top Flat and National Hunt tracks in the UK. For 5 days in June it showcases Royal Ascot, with the Queen in attendance. The best flat horses compete in 8 Group 1 races, with daily prize money in excess of 1 million pounds. Favourites can be vulnerable due to the size of the fields, especially on the flat. As a Grade 1 track it attracts the best horses, which leads to competitive fields at most of the meetings.

    TV Channel: Racing UK

Bookmaker Streaming Services Available from: Bet 365, Betfair, Coral, Unibet.

    Ascot: Right Handed Track

    Style: Galloping

Highlights at the course: Royal Ascot (June), King George Weekend (July), The Shergar Cup (August), QIPCO British Champions Day (Oct).

  • Tips on Course Bias for Royal Ascot

There is no definitive track advantage on the straight or round courses used for Royal Ascot, however because we cannot advise a low, middle or high number stall that does not mean there Is not an advantage, it just varies from meeting to meeting or day to day. You tend to find on the straight course a bias towards low middle or high numbers, it’s just no one truly knows until the 1st race has been run. The going will obviously have an effect.

Big summer flat handicaps such as the Hunt Cup tend to favour one side or the other, in 2017 for example the first 5 horses came from stalls 26,22,18,10,30. The first horse home from a single figure draw was the 8th placed Master the World, who came from stall 8. You could have upgraded that run from Master The World because he was disadvantaged by the draw (on the day), that horse ran second next time out at Newmarket and then won a 93k race at the Goodwood Festival, so do look for horses that run well from poor draws.  The Ascot Track bias tips was discussed on the olbg forum.

  • Royal Ascot Tips from Jockeys

OLBG Member Teddy T has unearthed some great jockey stats for Royal Ascot particularly focused on Ryan Moore.

Ryan Moore has been crowned top jockey at Royal Ascot in seven of the last eight years and is available at the current best odds of 1.91 to take the title again in 2018.

At face value those odds look pretty appealing considering Moore’s impressive record but is there a way of increasing the profit level by honing-in on the areas where Moore particularly excels?

The basic facts for Ryan Moore’s rides over the last ten years at Royal Ascot look like this:
Ryan Moore at Royal Ascot 2008-2017
    284 bets
    48 wins
    Win % 16.9
    P/L SP -21.52

Just backing Moore’s mounts blind in each of the last ten years would only have returned a profit twice so obviously we need to dig deeper.

If we split Moore’s rides down into handicap and non-handicap things start to get a bit clearer:

    200 bets
    35 wins
    Win % 17.5
    P/L SP -36.27

    84 bets
    13 wins
    Win % 15.48
    P/L SP 15.25

So, handicaps look a more profitable route to take with Moore but even with this approach only 4 of the last ten years would have been profitable and two of those were right at the beginning of the period.

  • Royal Ascot Top Betting Tips

    • Check the olbg tips pages for detailed comments on individual horses.
    • Read the daily horse racing discussion on the forum.
    • Check going and weather updates from the clerk of the course.
    • Check stall placement, and any early track bias.
    • Look to the top trainers of the best-bred horses, note offspring of Frankel, Peintre Celebre, Scat Daddy.
    • Check trainers who have had previous race success in a specific race.  Aidan O’Brian has won the St James Palace stakes on 7 occasions in the last 20 years, plus had numerous placed horses, it seems to be a race he targets with his Irish Guineas horses.
    • Look for horses that have travelled from Ireland and the continent for big prize money races. In the last 5 years from 2012 – 2017 five of the top trainers by percentage of winners have been non-UK trainers.
    • Look for Course and Distance winners especially over jumps, Ascot being a rarer right-handed course, horses that jump left will be disadvantaged.  Other righthanded jump tracks include Kempton and Sandown.
    • Look for horses that specifically avoided left handed tracks such as Cheltenham and Aintree and were targeted at Kempton, Sandown or Ascot.
    • Check previous handicap weight bands of winners of specific races, if the bulk of winners of a specific race come from the most common weight band, look deeper into those runners.
