Tips From The Racecourse for Royal Ascot

Ascot in Berkshire is one of the top Flat and National Hunt tracks in the UK. For 5 days in June, it showcases Royal Ascot. The best flat horses compete in 8 Group 1 races, with daily prize money of over 1 million pounds.

Favourites can be vulnerable due to the size of the fields, especially on the flat. As a Grade 1 track, it attracts the best horses, which leads to competitive fields at most of the meetings.

Tips on Course Bias for Royal Ascot

When breaking Ascot down into trips you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the best LSP, that would be stall 8 over a trip of 7f which has, over the last five years produced an LSP of +49.73. When breaking Ascot down into trips you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the worst LSP, that would be stall 6 over a trip of 1m which has, over the last five years produced an LSP of -61.00.

Here we have the draw bias for Ascot taken into consideration races with ten or more runners, we will break down the figures by race distance, draws can be much more important over the shorter trips in which runners do not have time to find their position during the race meaning the draw is probably more important than the races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)
  • Long Distance (1m6f or further)

The following table shows a breakdown over a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12), the positions will always be lowest stall number to highest.

Royal Ascot Tips Jockey Analysis

OLBG Member Teddy T has unearthed some great jockey stats for Royal Ascot particularly focused on Ryan Moore.

At face value, those odds look pretty appealing considering Moore’s impressive record but is there a way of increasing the profit level by honing in on the areas where Moore particularly excels?

The basic facts for Ryan Moore’s rides over the last ten years at Royal Ascot look like this:

Ryan Moore at Royal Ascot 2014-2023 - 311 bets for 58 wins (19% strike rate) and an LSP of -18.58.

Just backing Moore’s mounts blind in each of the last ten years would only have returned a profit twice so we need to dig deeper.

Watch out when he teams up with Aidan O'Brien with a 2-year-old runner, he has won on 13 of his 49 rides (27%) for an LSP of +16.36 (+31.70 BSP).

His Group 1 rides are the source of most of the loss with an LSP of -24.06 for 78 Group 1 rides.

Consider the horse's position in the odds market too, when his rides have been either 2nd or 3rd in the market his LSP of +26.07 (23% strike rate), his LSP of those at the top of the market is -20.65 and those 4th or worse his LSP is -24.00 (7-133 6%).

You can read more on the forum thread for Royal Ascot Jockey tips where other members have joined in with further stats, tips and trends around the jockey's past performances at Royal Ascot.

Jamie Spencer at Royal Ascot

Jamie Spencer may not have the best of records at Royal Ascot, but since 2008 he has ridden 242 runners and produced just 15 winners (6%) for an LSP of +30.68.

So why mention him, I hear you say with such a low strike rate and a profit made up of 2023 winners at 50/1 & 80/1.

Well, there is a way in which he has produced a steady profit year after year and that is backing his runners to place.

From his 242 rides, he has placed on a total of 67 of those, which is a 28% place strike rate, now backing all his rides eachway (5+ runner fields) does produce a profit of +107.98 but again mainly due to his 2023 winners.

However, had you backed all 242 of those on the Betfair exchange to place at SP, then the LSP would have been a very impressive +162.83! That is a profit of £1,628 if you had placed £10 on each!

This can be improved upon too, his rides over further than a mile do not produce a lot of placings, only 15 from 90 for an LSP of -35.58 so you could rule those out.

His record around the round course is not great either with 16 placings from 100 rides for an LSP of -42.94, Jamie seems much better navigating his way through on the straight course.

So if you focused on Jamie Spencer to place over no further than one mile on the straight course, then since 2008 the numbers are 142 Rides, 51 Places (36%), LSP of +182.46 (BSP) which is very good!

The most impressive thing about this is consistency, over the last fifteen festivals, using the rules above, Spencer has shown a profit in the place market in fourteen of those festivals!

Royal Ascot Top Betting Tips

  • Check the OLBG tips pages for detailed comments on individual horses.
  • Read the daily horse racing discussion on the OLBG Discord server.
  • Check going and weather updates from the clerk of the course.
  • Check stall placement and any early track bias.
  • Look to the top trainers of the best-bred horses, note offspring of Frankel, Peintre Celebre, and Scat Daddy.
  • Check trainers who have had previous race success in a specific race. Aidan O’Brien has won the St James Palace stakes numerous times in the last 20 years, plus he has numerous placed horses, it seems to be a race he targets with his Irish Guineas horses.
  • Check previous handicap weight bands of winners of specific races, if the bulk of winners of a specific race come from the most common weight band, look deeper into those runners.

Royal Ascot Trainer & Jockey Statistics

Who are the best flat jockeys and trainers to bet on at Ascot?

A P O'Brien is the leading trainer here at Ascot with forty-four winners but you would have recorded a loss if you backed all of their runners whilst following W P Mullins would have returned the most winners (seven) from a profitable trainer. C G Cox is the trainer to follow at Ascot if you are backing eachway as they show the best LSP of all the trainers in the eachway markets, that is +53.78 which is courtesy of their thirteen placings (five winners). Following L Dettori would have returned a profit here at Ascot with an LSP of +0.98 and their thirty-four winners have them at the head of the profitable jockeys' list.
