Personal Best was given a short break of 7 weeks or so after the summer. She then ran a creditable fourth last month in a better race than this (Spirit of Jura ran badly), and the form of the Class 4 handicap race she won in June is working out well. Jonathan Portman's filly acts on soft and stays the trip, which may give her a stamina advantage over Brielle, who won over 10 furlongs at Ayr. 8/1 looks a fair price.

The form of the £30k Goodwood maiden that Pearl River ran in has already been given a decent boost when A Taste Of Glory - 2.5L behind Pearl River that day - duly obliged on Monday by winning a 13-runner maiden race at Brighton with something to spare. Pearl River wasn't given a hard time when unable to catch smart-looking Bay Of Brilliance over ten furlongs on good to soft, and it now looks likely the opening handicap mark of 76 for Lord Carnarvon's colt is somewhat generous, albeit this is quite a hot little nursery.

The market has got Ultrasoul about right at 3/1 although he switches back from the artificial surface to turf and has it to prove on good to soft. Transparent and Navagio are of interest against the favourite. Transparent went well last time at Newbury's flat mile on easy ground. Navagio has slipped to a very competitive mark and went very close to landing the spoils last time over a stiff seven at Beverley until meeting trouble in running. A return to a mile on easy ground poses no problems and with better luck may well compensate.

With four class-droppers in this handicap it is likely to be run at decent pace. Along with Metabolt, We Dare To Dream has been just a little outclassed in better company but has nonetheless been running well and making his presence felt. He 'won' off a mark of 87 in a Class 3 at Haydock in July, until demoted to second in the Stewards' Enquiry, so today's handicap rating of 85 should keep him in the mix. Sir Mark uses a good claiming apprentice with a seven pound allowance, suggesting his runner is not as well-in as he might have hoped.

Stormy Monday has the sort of pedigree which points to his current vein of winning form continuing, despite a five-pound rise in the weights. Home-bred by Too Darn Hot out of a Frankel mare, the three-year-old colt is staying 10 furlongs well and has a good turn of foot. Soft or good to soft ground on a flat track is ideal. The class 4 he won at Doncaster last time has some substance, with the runner-up winning on the bridle next time out. 11/2 about Stormy Monday seems most fair. Front-runner Due To Henry could set the race up for a battle at the finish.
