Typically this race goes to a horse who has already scored a high RPR and who comes here with a win last race. Sober Glory has achieved an RPR that is nearly the best in this race, and he has achieved the best top speed rating of all. He has done this without really coming off the bridle in his two most recent runs, and last time won by nearly thirty lengths. Likely to set the pace here and could have a few of them stretched and jumping tested. Still open to improvement in this more competitive race.

Comes here with a perfect form profile for an Arkle winner with three wins in the last three runs. Is second on RPR and top on Top Speed. Won his last three all very easily, going away at the finish and jumping generally well. Beat the experienced handicapper Unexpected Party. Was also a high-class hurdler, which most Arkle winners tend to be.

The trainer has won three of the last four races, including a win with the same horse two years running. He comes back this year with last year’s winner, who won by 11 lengths off a mark of 127. He comes here today with a mark of 142, but watching last year’s race he won with so much in hand that this higher mark seems feasible. He hasn’t shown much recent form, but his last run was promising until he possibly didn’t stay the longer trip, having not particularly settled. A fast pace at the favored distance on ground that suits should see a much improved showing.

I think this race is pretty open. Three main favourites all would prefer a longer trip and softer ground, in my view. Last year's winner has every chance, but take a chance on a young horse who is the perfect age and who won the big Newbury Hurdle. He did so in simply amazing fashion. The soft ground may have affected a few, but he finished 15 lengths clear of second and over 30 clear of all others. That was probably the performance of a mid-150 rated horse, which puts him in the mix and suggests he could still be improving. The favs are known to suffer cold spots during their races when it goes too quick, and I think this selection may well not be coming back to them.
