Interesting match up. I can see why Zhao is regarded as the favourite but Wakelin has played some excellent snooker in defeating Robertson and Allen. I think Wakelin on the handicap at Evens is a fair price as I think he will pose a lot of problems for Zhao, especially if this match goes deep into the third session.

Which Ronnie are we going to get? How many times have we heard/asked that question? Best to keep it simple. Carter will definitely relish this contest and will not be fazed as much as the majority of players do when they go up against Ronnie. Ronnie will likely score heavily as he always does regardless of form, but his all-round game (match sharpness) does take a while to show itself and it's imperative that Carter makes the most of those early opportunities. No idea who wins. It's all about Ronnie for me, but I can't back him at the price. I wouldn't put anyone off Carter at over 2/1.

Si Jiahui is clearly one of a few Chinese players on the rise and has shown he has no fear of the biggest stage when being effectively one ball away from a place in the 2023 final. Hard to gauge where Gilbert's game is at. Hasn't kicked on at all from his run to the semis last year and admittedly wasn't putting the work in, but expect him to bring some better form tonight. Hard to call, but for a bit of value - I'll pick Si to win a close game. 10-8.

Another solid season from Hawkins reaching the final of the UK Championship and was only halted by a resurgent John Higgins in the Tour Championship. The longer frame matches and the biggest tournaments bring out the best in him and he usually comes to the fold in the second half of the season. His record at the Crucible in the last few years has been disappointing (failed to qualify last year) but you always know he will be a hard match for anybody. Vafaei can be a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character when it comes to his form but remains with lots of potential to make a breakthrough in a big tournament. He was in excellent form on Judgment Day and will go into this match on a high. Expect Hawkins to win a tough game with his all-round game making the difference down the stretch.

Ran a cracker in the Dawn Run at Cheltenham to collar Sixandahalf at the line. Back up in trip today and looks the value pick at the prices over stablemate The Big Westerner, who is likely to go off favourite. Karoline Banbou is an interesting alternative at a bigger price.

What can be said about Mark Williams that hasn't been mentioned previously? Still going strong nearing 50 as he proved with victory in the Champion of Champions and an agonizing runner-up in the Saudi Arabia Masters in the first half of 24/25. We will not mention a difference of £300k between winning and losing... That being said, his form has been patchy in 2025, and Wu Yize is more than capable of putting in a performance on his return to the Crucible. He reached the Top 20 in the rankings for the first time after qualifying for the WC on the back of reaching the final in the English and Scottish Opens.

24/25 has been a much welcome return to form for Robbo with wins in the English Open and World Grand Prix. Despite being a winner of the WC in 2010, he has often performed way below expectations at the Crucible and has only reached the one table set-up once (2014) since his triumph. Wakelin has had a solid season himself being a runner-up at the International Championship in November - becoming a Top 16 player for the first time and making his first appearance at the Masters. Not quite kicked on since then, but it would not be a surprise if he got the victory here. The odds for Robbo to win the match are a little short for my liking, but I still expect him to come through in a closely fought contest.
