The Tampa Bay Downs racetrack has undergone a lot of name changes over the years. First opened in 1926, this racetrack has been known as Tampa Downs, Sunshine Park, Florida Downs, and Turf Club. The racetrack is located just outside Tampa in Westchase, Florida.
The season runs from November through to May with racing most Wednesday and Friday evenings.
The racetrack like most US racetracks features both dirt and turf courses. The turf course is a seven-furlong oval that includes a quarter-mile chute. Whilst, the dirt course is a mile oval.

Tampa Bay Downs Notable Races
The highlight of the year is 'Festival Day' which is held in March of each year. The top race of the 'Festival Day' is the Tampa Bay Derby, a race that is open to three-year-old runners and is run over one mile and half a furlong. The Tampa Bay Derby is a prep race for the Kentucky Derby and in 2007, Street Sense became the first winner of both races.
Also held on Festival Day is the Hillsborough Stakes, a Grade 2 race open to older fillies and mares. It is run over one mile and one furlong. This race can be a guide to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. In 2012 Zagora after winning this race went on to succeed at the Breeders Cup.
The Grade 3 Florida Oaks is also a feature on Festival Day. A race that is run over one mile and a half a furlong and is open to three-year-old fillies only.
Finally, In February of each year, we have more graded races.
On the Dirt, we have the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes for three-year-old runners run over one mile and half a furlong. Whilst on the turf we have both the South Endeavour Stakes and the Tampa Bay Stakes. Both of which are Grade 3 races open to older horses and are run over one mile and half a furlong.
