Golf - 'Player of the Week' 2018 (W/B 9th July)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Jul 09, 2018 1:44 pm

We couldn't manage a winner in Week 19 but had 2 placed efforts with Jon Rahm (7/1) finishing in a tie for 4th for steenie1 in the Irish Open and Joaquin Niemann (28/1) finished in a share of 5th for PompeyJim in the Greenbrier Classic.

After 19 weeks of the 2018 'Player of the Week' thread, the running total stands at 17 winning tips and 42 Each Way payouts!

This Week....

A final warm up week for some of the players before the British Open at Carnoustie next week, we have 8 tournaments with the Scottish Open headlining along with the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour.

Image

If you follow the golf, please feel free to have a go if you have not done so as yet and select your player to follow in one of this week's tournaments and please ask any questions below on this thread if unsure as regards the competition set up, 29 members have played so far this year.

The scoring format is detailed below, the requirement is ONE selection per week which can be from any of the Golf tournaments which we will list each new week with the cut off times for entries.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans reading the ‘Player of the Week’ thread last year was the analysis which accompanied member’s selections so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your selection is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

CRITERIA

- Maximum 1 selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

WEEKLY SCORING

- Tournament Winner = 30 points
- Second = 15 points
- Third = 10 points
- Fourth = 7 points
- Fifth = 5 points

Additional scoring for player odds -

- Up to and including 33/1 = 10 points for a win and 5 points for a place.
- 34/1 to 99/1 = 20 points for a win and 10 points for a place.
- 100/1 and bigger = 30 points for a win and 15 points for a place.

ADDITIONAL POINTS

- *54 hole leader = 4 points
- First Round Leader = 3 points
- Made The Cut = 2 points

*Includes 36 hole leader for three round events like on the Champions Tour.

All points will be doubled for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The British Open and the USPGA Championship).

As we have the Ryder Cup this year we will confirm the point scoring for that in due course which will also be included in the overall ‘Player of the Week’ table.

We will confirm the prize amount available in due course for the winner of the ‘Player of the Week’ thread which will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.

This Week we have –

- INDONESIAN OPEN (Asian Tour) (Entry deadline 1 am Thursday)
- SCOTTISH OPEN (European Tour)(Entry deadline 7 am Thursday)
- ITALIAN CHALLENGE (Challenge Tour)(Entry deadline 7 am Thursday)

PLAYER: Patrick Rodgers

TOURNAMENT: John Deere Classic

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

The American was second to Bryson DeChambeau twelve months ago at the John Deere Classic. 8th at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 7th at The Players Championship and 8th at The Memorial Tournament, Rodgers spoke of how TPC Deere Run really suited his eye last year and he was 27th and 15th in previous years at the John Deere Classic. With alot of big names over in Scotland warming up for The Open, Patrick Rodgers at 66/1 this week with SkyBet is a very attractive Each Way pick. Backing Rodgers to have a big week at the John Deere Classic once again.

Player : Francesco Molinari 10-1 bet365

Event : John Deere Classic

Reason for Support : Well Francesco has really come to the fore recently with 2 wins and a 2nd in his last 4 events and now he has broken in to the U.S. the sky is the limit, he wiped the floor with them by 8 shots in the Quicken Loans National. This is a technical course with past winners Stricker winning three times in a row and Zach Johnson being in the top 5 in 6 out of last 7 years. gl all

PLAYER: Hyo Joo Kim

TOURNAMENT: MARATHON CLASSIC (LPGA Tour)

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Players who have won or performed very well at the U.S. Open have a good record here as they need to play accurate golf from tee to green as this course has a creek which is close to seven of the holes and the fairways are quite narrow and hilly whilst the greens are well bunkered. My selection is Hyo Joo Kim 20/1 who came 2nd at the U.S. Open this year and has played accurately this season ( presently ranked 7th in driving accuracy ). She came jt 5th here in 2015, 4th in 2016 and was jt 13th last year so she has some good course form.

Player zach Johnson (12/1)
Event John Deere
Reason
This is obviously an event that zach Johnson likes a past winner's in 2012 and plenty of good finishes including a 5th last year Johnson rarely misses a cut only 1 this year and despite looking just off the pace in many events is always a lively threat this is not the strongest of fields and represents a good chance for some momentum going into open week 12th in the us open and 19th in the travellers championship shows zach is not that far off the leader board and those were much stronger fields

PLAYER: JUSTIN ROSE (10/1)
TOURNAMENT: Scottish Open
REASON FOR SUPPORT: Third in the world golf rankings, Justin Rose has form in the Scottish Open. He won the event at Royal Aberdeen in 2014, so Scottish links courses hold no fear. He now mostly plays on the PGA Tour and in world championships rather than the bread-and-butter events of the European Tour, and has posted 7 top ten finishes from 12 of those events. They include 2 wins (the HSBC World Championships and Fort Worth), and a third place in the Arnold Palmer. His last tournament was the US Open where he finished T10. His record for consecutive cuts in all events now stands at 16 and his scoring average is sub-70 at 69.165.

PLAYER: hideki matsyuma (22/1)
TOURNAMENT: Scottish Open
REASON FOR SUPPORT: looking at the roll call of the Scottish open it has been won by top players for the last few years. As such I am naturally drawn to the the players near the top of the world rankings. Matsyuma has been easing back into a full schedule after an injury earlier in the year but he has finished top twenty in his last 3 tournaments and looks ready to push on to top 10 and maybe beyond. He has finished top twenty 3 out of his 5 times at the open so obviously has the intelligence to play links and his t16 at the US Open in horrible conditions shows he has the maturity and patience if faced by a tough rub of the green.

Player: WES BRYAN (40/1)

TOURNAMENT: John Deere Classic

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Wes has plenty to play for this week in a weakened field, he is currently just outside the top 140 in the FedEx ranking points and needs to get inside the top 125 to retain his tour card for next season. He had a poor first six months of the year and missed seven in eight cuts between April and May but has improved his form since with a couple of decent finishes recently. A share of 12th in the St Jude a month ago and a share of 26th last week at the Greenbrier where he shot two 69's and a 65 shows his game is in better shape. This is one of the easier courses on tour and Wes has back to back top ten's here, 3rd last year and 8th in 2016.

Tournament: Senior Players Championship
Player: Jerry Kelly
Reason for support: Jerry Kelly has played well so far this season in the Champions Tournaments. He already has six Top 10 finishes. Kelly has won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, he has also finished second at the Cologuard Classic and the American Family Insurance Championship couple of weeks ago. Kelly was in Top 10 in his latest three tournaments in a row. I expect Jerry Kelly to perform well at the Constellation Senior Championship this week also.

winstongolf senior open
greg turner
25/1 bet365
this course may suit greg's game, he is seventeen under par for six rounds here over the past two years. he finished in eighth place two years back and improved to third twelve months ago. the kiwi returns in good form. in his last three outings he has placed no worse than seventeenth and was fifth at the swiss senior open last week
