Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2022 (W/B 10th January)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Jan 10, 2022 3:24 pm

Welcome to Week 2 of Player of the Week 2022, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

After feedback from our playing members we have tweaked some rules and scoring for the 2022 POTW competition which are highlighted in the relevant section below.

There are three tournaments this week, headlined by the PGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii.

If you have not played in previously then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2022:

*Change for the 2022 POTW Competition

Weekly Selections

*A player can only be selected ONCE during the season. So if you select Justin Thomas for the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Week 1 you cannot select him again during the 2022 weekly competition.

Golfer To Follow For The Year

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick. We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2022. This selection will earn points every time they finish in the top five places in a tournament.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be used ONCE as a weekly selection throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus additional points if he/she finishes in the top five places in a tournament.

Selection Analysis

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

- For your first entry of 2022 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week (not a player you have selected previously in the current POTW competition), with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- If you select a player you have already selected in an earlier week of the current POTW competition then you will be asked to pick another player, if the replacement selection is not received before the entry cut off time then your original duplicated selection will be void for that week. It is advisable to keep track of the players you have selected in previous weeks of the current POTW competition to avoid any issues.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member that week.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be before the scheduled first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

*The revised competition scoring is detailed below.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 35 points
- 4th = 25 points
- 5th = 20 points
- 6th to 10th = 15 points
- 11th to 20th = 10 points
- 21st to 30th = 5 points

- A Round Leader (1st, 2nd & 3rd) = 10 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

(Multiplier applied to final points (Finishing Position + Additional Points) based on the win odds of the selection))

- Up to 10/1 (11.0) = Points x 1
- 11/1 (12.0) to 20/1 (21.0) = Points x 1.5
- 21/1 (22.0) to 50/1 (51.0) = Points x 2
- 51/1 (52.0) to 80/1 (81.0) = Points x 2.5
- 81/1 (82.0) to 125/1 (126.0) = Points x 3
- 126/1 (127.0) to 250/1 (251.0) = Points x 3.5
- 251/1 (252.0) to 500/1 (501.0) = Points x 4
- 501/1 (502.0) and higher = Points x 5

So the bonus multiplier works on the basis of points earned that week. For example, a player @ best priced win odds of 25/1 making the cut but finishing outside the top 30 would earn 10 points (cut points = 5) x 2 (Bonus Multiplier 21/1 to 50/1).

Another example, a player was first round leader, made the cut and finished 5th @ best priced win odds of 16/1 would earn 52.5 points (10+5+20 x 1.5).

Dead Heat rules do not apply where there are place ties for point scoring, full points will be awarded.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Runner Up = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 15 points
- 5th = 10 points

* No other additional points will be awarded for this pick

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

£15 to the Winner, this will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.
£5 to the Runner up.

- AUSTRALIAN PGA CHAMPIONSHIP (PGA Tour of Australasia) Entry deadline 21:00 Wednesday
- SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL (Asian Tour) Entry deadline 00:00 Thursday
- SONY OPEN IN HAWAII (PGA Tour) Entry deadline 17:00 Thursday

Please add your pick using the template style below so your selection and tournament is clear for readers looking to follow your pick. Please also include your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' with your first entry (you don't need to include this pick every week).

Please feel free to ask any questions and it will be great to see as many members as possible post a selection each week and a golfer to follow for the year.

Also you can join in at any time, don’t worry if you miss a week or did not post the first week etc..

Good luck!

PLAYER: Min Woo Lee @6 (bet365)

TOURNAMENT: Australian PGA Championship

REASON FOR SUPPORT: Min Woo Lee has finished the past season in a very convincing way, having made the last 6 cuts in a row and finished in the top-20 in the last 4 events: he has also won the Scottish Open a few months earlier and 2021 has certainly been his best season, considering that he has been able to enter the first 50 places in thw OWGR recovering more than 120 places in one year. He can count on the best ranking here by far and I think he will fight for the first places in this event too.

PLAYER: Corey Conners

Corey Conners 28/1 is a consistent player who has only missed one cut ( in the U.S.Open ) since March of last year. He is capable pf performing well from tee to green ( ranked 9th in driving accuracy and 14th in greens in regulation this season ) which could be important at this short par 70 course which has tree lined fairways and he was jt 3rd here in 2019 and came jt 12th in 2020 so he has some good course form.

PLAYER: Brendan Steele 80/1 (bet365)

Steele is basically a horses for courses pick. He was T4 here last year and solo 2nd in 2020. Also tends to be influenced by the course a lot, with similar outlier good results at the Honda classic. Also, none of the players at more middle odds jump out at me as having the consistency I'd like for the odds, I'd rather gamble early in the season and like the EW.

Player - Marc Leishman (20/1)

Tournament - Sony Open in Hawaii

Reasons for Support -

Marc Leishman was tied 28th here in 2020 closing with a 67 and last season posted four consecutive rounds in the 60’s in Hawaii to finish tied 4th. Three 65’s seen them Australian finish two shots behind Cameron Smith and I fancy he takes inspiration from his fellow countryman winning last week in the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. Leishman has never missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii and since 2013 has posted four top ten finishes here, I am siding with the six time PGA Tour winner going close at Waialae Country Club on Oahu. The world number 33 is best price 20/1 this week with a lot of the main high street bookmakers such as Betfred and William Hill.

Player : Kevin Na 30/1

Event : Sony Open

Reason for Support : The first full field tournament of the season which looks like a good one if last week is anything to go by. Kevin has a good chance having had a very good tune up with T13th place last week in the Sentry tournament of Champions. Kevin could not defend his Shrinkers Children Open because he injured his ribs but he showed he was back to good health winning the QBE Shootout with Jason kokrak. Kevin is also the defending Champion and should be at the top of the leaderboard. gl all.

My player to follow for the year is : Jin Young Ko

PLAYER: Kevin Kisner 35/1

EVENT: Sony Open

REASON FOR SUPPORT: Kisner improved throughout the weekend at last week’s Tournament of Champions, shooting a final round 65 to finish 8th, making a decent return of four top 8 finishes from his last 11 PGA Tour events. He has had three top five finishes in the last six years at this event, including placing 4th two years ago.

PLAYER: Seamus Power @45 888Sport

REASON FOR SUPPORT: In his 4 outings here he has missed the cut in the last 2 but he has been a better player now. Last year he finished in Top20 5 times before winning his first title at Barbasol Championship. He ended last year with a 4th place finish at RSM Classic. Last week he made his debut at Tournament of Champions and ended in a respectable 15th spot which should give his confidence a boost to do well here.
