Tote Ten To Follow Jumps 2021 Competition

Postby PompeyJim » Fri Oct 22, 2021 4:58 pm

The Tote Ten To Follow Jumps 2021 Competition opens for entries on Monday 25th October so we thought we'd open a discussion thread for TTTF racing fans to chip in with thoughts, fancies, tips, strategies and everything TTTF.

We have put together an OLBG Guide to the TTTF Competition (link below) which includes the vital Competition details and how to enter if members are playing for the first time. We have included a section on the top stables and the top TTTF points scorers for the Jumps competition last year which hopefully players with find useful.

https://www.olbg.com/blogs/olbg-guide-t ... ompetition

Please feel free to kick off the discussion and let us know if you are intending playing and your early fancies etc.

We've set up an OLBG Members league, the code to join is 000106.

Best of luck.

When this first started years ago, I entered and put ten up to follow, only to find that those ten came up against each other at one point all never ran, plus if doing so never placed and could be costly to play, that was the first and only time of playing, some how, you will have to be analysis every horse and look all at declarations and anti post set up to find ten to follow, then there is a fee for reserves after a retain time and the entry fee added to this comes costly and more than likely never make a position of a return.

All very good with people who are well involved with racing and do the searching.

1) declarations
2) type of horse
A) hurdler, chaser
B) novice, handicapper,
3) distances
4) goings
5) type of races graded or handicaps.
6) horses that can race numerous times.
7) horses that look handicapped to run well
8) big races profile to win
A) Gold Cups Kempton, and Cheltenham.
B) Grand National and other top quality handicaps
C) Champion hurdle also along with top hurdle races that take in championship races.

The list can go in and on, to try and compel ten to follow and members like me, do not have the expertise to find and come up with a true ten but if you are lucky enough to do so, congratulations.

Taking on this competition can be fun and hopefully you do well for your fee.

I cannot get seven right for the ITV7 never mind ten right in a season and our tipping tables gives us an angle who could do well but they can be hit and a miss too.

Look forward to seeing members scoring high be great to see. All the best.
I be giving this comp a miss and staying to the OLBG competitions they are tough enough to win.

Thanks for the post meoldmate, yes it certainly isn't meant to be easy as you would expect with probably £100,000 up for grabs. Also just to clarify for anyone playing, there is no fee charged by the Tote for the two substitutions allowed during the transfer window at the beginning of March.

Last year's winner had six chasers and four hurdlers in the stable, runners from the top yards of Willie Mullins, Nicky Henderson, Henry de Bromhead etc. We've put together some stats and info in the TTTF Jumps blog which will hopefully be useful:

https://www.olbg.com/blogs/olbg-guide-t ... ompetition

Also don't forget there is a free game with monthly prizes for race day tickets. We will set up an OLBG league and add the joining code here in due course.

Reasoning behind my ten to follow

CHAMP

Trained by Nicky Henderson and this son of Kings Theatre showed potential in his early races over hurdles and then went chasing and after two wins and a fell at Cheltenham in January 2020 looked to put a hold on him but then reappeared at the festival and won the RSA, after this he was just run out of things at Newbury.
Raced in the Gold Cup but something was not right there and possibly something wrong.
Has the ability to improve and being a 160 plus rating horse can have the ability to make his play strong wherever he lines up.
Does have a few interesting declarations which does include the Gold Cup once more.

FERNY HOLLOW

Son of Westerner and trained by Willie Mullins.
He won the champion bumper at Cheltenham and this line of form I do like to follow and this youngster could be a hurdler going places with a view of being lined up in big races to come and may even be a strong contender for the champion hurdle race, that would be good.

MIGHTY THUNDER

Scottish trained by Miss Lucinda Russell and this one is my answer to a possible national horse, he jumps and stays and can be giving this yard another big run in the Grand National at Aintree and make it a second for the Kinross base.

MINILLA MELODY

Trained by Gold Cup winning trainer Henry De Broomhead and this mare has the ability to put in some top performances, ran with merit last season and can show improvement to be a serious contender for first places with many races.

NEXT DESTINATION

Paul Nicholls trained nine year old who can hold his own in graded races and this one left Willie Mullins stable for here in 2020 and has continued to show very good form with two wins and two seconds.
Four outings with positive performances, hopefully another season like this can be rewarding once more.

ROYALE PAGAILLIE

Mrs Venetia Williams trains this seven year old and he had the one race last season which was in the Gold Cup, with a sixth place.
Possibly campaigned a bit more this season and with any easing of the ground, then he will be commanding with big runs, whether they are graded races or top handicaps.

SADLIER

Willie Mullins trained and useful hurdler who can make an impact in good handicaps and can run numerous times and can be found races to win
Last seen winning a grade three race and has the ability to travel well through his races.

SHISHKIN

Nicky Henderson darling and what a horse, who has the potential to be a champion chaser for awhile being only seven.
His fencing is so slick and quick he can make lengths with out breaking sweat.
Would not be surprised to see this one in many of the ten to follow selections.

THE SHUNTER

Emmett Mullins trains this eight year old who had a very good last season in handicaps and graded chase races and looks one to follow with more to come this season , with distances of two miles to two and a half mile races.

THYME HILL

Phillip Hobbs trained powerful stayer who will be aimed at the top three mile hurdle races and can be a formidable force with him to jump and stay with a turn of foot in at the finish.

There you go folks after writing up these, I feel I have winners galore, mre likely to fall flat on my face. :D

FERNY HOLLOW

Son of Westerner and trained by Willie Mullins.
She won the champion bumper

Just a little contradiction there meoldmate !

Shishkin will be in most lists and looks a potential Champion Chaser.
On the whole it looks an ok ten , I do like Mighty Thunder as a National prospect - he will be trained with one race in mind and 33's ante post looks fair value - they may try to protect his handicap mark before the big day, so not too sure where he will pick up many points from before then.

Cheers Mr Ex, how that happen with she bit, I do not know. Must have a sex change in seconds :D
Mighty Thunder may have a couple of outings as they did with One For Arthur, 33/1 looks good.
They all look good and more than likely be the strongest player in the competition by holding everyone up from bottom place :D :D :D

Bankers or blowouts?

One of the starting points for any Ten To Follow competition is to review the current champions and decide if they are likely to rack up the points again in the upcoming season.

Champion Hurdle: HONEYSUCKLE is the current two mile champion over hurdles and with a massive eight Grade 1 wins to her name it would surely be a brave person who would consider leaving her out for the 2021/22 Ten To Follow. With the unbeaten mare already trading at around the 7/4 mark to repeat her Cheltenham win, it is likely she will be one of, if not the most, selected horses for this year.
The Henry de Bromhead trained 7yo has run eleven times in three seasons and her supporters look likely to benefit from another strong points scoring performance as she picks her way back towards Cheltenham. With the field at 12/1 bar Honeysuckle it's not easy to come up with a viable alternative to the current champ in the Champion Hurdle and she looks a BANKER.

Gold Cup: MINELLA INDO was apparently less forward than Henry de Bromhead thought when finishing third to Frodon on his reappearance at Down Royal, but that from looks a fair bit short of Gold Cup class and he looks a returning winner to take on. Likely to head to the King George, where his trainer has already suggested that his horse "maybe not your typical King George horse", the 8yo is only fifth in the ante post betting for Kempton.
Retaining the Gold Cup is notoriously difficult with only Al Boum Photo and Best Mate managing the feat in the last fifty plus years. On top of that seven of the last ten Gold Cup winners began their victorious campain with a win in their seasonal opener. With that in mind, and a trip to Kempton unlikely to trouble the scorer, he has to be a BLOWOUT.

Champion Chase: PUT THE KETTLE ON is a Cheltenham specialist with a perfect four from four record at the track. This likeable mare was probably in the right place at the right time last year when taking advantage of Chacun Pour Soi under performing in what was probably a low quality renewal of the top speed chasers at the Festival.
Put The Kettle on was due to begin this campaign at Gowran Park in October but was taken out due to the fast ground. The Shloer Chase had been mentioned as an early season target by trainer de Bromhead as the mare also won that race last year on her seasonal debut.
Game as this mare is, it is likely that something will improve past her this year and she too looks like a BLOWOUT.

How do you think the current champions will fare this year and will they be part of your Tote Ten To Follow squad for 2021/22?
