I have just updated my trends based blog (link below) with my final comments and selections.

In light of the fact that this race has been won by runners starting at odds of 20/1 or bigger in 7 of the last 10 years, I have passed over the 2 most fancied qualifiers on the trends, in favour of 3 selections at current odds ranging from 25/1 to 33/1.

Best of luck to all readers with their selections in the Irish Grand National.

Baie Des Iles had her natural 5th birthday only a couple of days ago. Surely this is a step too far for a horse so young, even for a baguette.

You may be right, but her previous form with BONNY KATE over a similar distance in the Grand National Trial, gives her a reasonable chance and at such a young age, she may be capable of further improvement and at 25/1, she is worth chancing in my opinion.

Venitien De Mai ticks all my trends boxes (as do Bonny Kate & CVT) im glad to see Micko has tipped him up given his solid record in this race.

10/10 age 6-10
10/10 under 11 stone
10/10 irish or French bred
10/10 had run at least twice that season
10/10 had run in 4 to 12 chases
10/10 had won 1 to 4 chases
10/10 had run in 7 or fewer handicap chases
10/10 had first start in a hurdle, bumper or point to point
10/10 first 3 over 3m+
10/10 won right handed

VDM has 6 wins from 8 starts over fences (inc. PTP's) 5 of them were at 3mile so he should be staying the distance if hes lucky enough to get a clear round which his front running style may help

I was never happy with the way Mala Beach was jumping, he looks a horse to be wary of for me.

The winner got back up gamely. Ruby must have thought he was going to win that one.

Given the trends on starting prices Bonny Kate was surely suicidal value for money but it just never stops the short priced lemmings.
