We're underway for Cheltenham 2018 !!

Supreme Novices Hurdle Result:

1st SUMMERVILLE BOY 9/1 (SP)
2nd KALASHNIKOV 5/1 (Toilet tip, nearly off to a winner!)
3rd Mengli Khan 14/1

308 tip comments added on the first with 48 members on the winner Summerville Boy who confirmed the Tolworth Hurdle form with Kalashnikov.

Well done to the 48 off to a winning start including Pieros (ew), Tommythetipper, richard1963(ew) and tward07 to win -

"Summerville Boy comes into the race having 4 runs over hurdles, with success on the final run - which so happened to be the Grade 1 Tolworth. He beat Supreme 2nd fav Kalashnikov that day on very testing ground after the Nicholls runner set a very brisk pace from the off, travelling smoothly before asserting on the run in to win by 4 lengths. On his previous runs he was often too keen due to the lack of pace on offer so it is very promising that he settled well on this run as you will expect the race opener to be run quickly, even in the conditions. If you are a fan of trends, Graded winning form and in particular last time out wins are a big plus. It is common that Supreme winners come into the race having been beating previously in the season as the good horses can take time and experience to master their trade."

Arkle up next, Petit Mouchoir to reverse the form with Footpad ?

Arkle Result:

1st - FOOTPAD 5/6f (SP) (Toilet Tip winner!!)
2nd - Brain Power 14/1

Very impressive winner despite one alarming mistake, St Calvados and Petit Mouchoir took each other on and set the race up for the closers.

212 tip comments with 110 sticking with the unbeaten chaser Footpad, well done to Pieros who has started with the first two winners -

I was always very keen on his chances since switching over the larger obstacles: he seemed to lack of speed over hurdles and was tried even over three miles when third to Unowhatimeanharry and Nichols Canyon (RIP). A completely new strategy since going over fences with a more prominent position made him a top class novice. Unbeaten in 3 starts including two Grade 1 contests, loves testing conditions, travels well and jumps economically and was extremely impressive last time out at Leoparstown when clocking a similar time of Min that won the same day over that course and distance helped by the strong front runner Special Tiara in that occasion. Considering he’s a novice Footpad looks a very exciting prospect for Willie Mullins, already winner in the Arkle with Un De Sceaux and Douvan.

Ultima Handicap Chase up next, good luck.

One for the girls, well done to Lizzie Kelly.

Ultima Chase Result:

1st - COO STAR SIVOLA 5/1f (SP)
2nd - Shantou Flyer 14/1
3rd - Vintage Clouds 7/1
4th - Beware The Bear 14/1

33 of the 304 tip comments on the Ultima were on Coo Star Sivola, highlighted by apollo14 and owl100 (below) -

"There aren't the usual amount of unexposed types in here but Coo Star Sivola certainly meets that profile and looks perfect for this race. He was a smart hurdler and had good Festival form over the smaller obstacles. He was placed in the Fred Winter off 132 and 4th in the Martin Pipe off 138 won by the subsequent Grade 1 winner Champagne Classic. He got off the mark at the 5th attempt over fences at Exeter last time when upped to 3 miles. Under the 7lb penalty he's now off 142 which looks fair based on his Festival form with further improvement likely under what appear to be ideal conditions."

Champion Hurdle up next, can anyone topple Buveur D'Air ?

Champion Hurdle Result:

1st - BUVEUR D'AIR 4/6f (SP)
2nd - Melon 7/1
3rd - Mick Jazz 25/1

256 tip comments on the Champion and 68 members stuck with the reigning champ to retain his title, he had to work for it!

Luke90 -

"Proven to be a cut above in this sphere and there doesn't really seem to be any challengers for his title. Yorkhill has his quirks, probably wants a bit further and isn't in the best of form. Faugheen has bombed the last twice and although he wears the cheekpieces this time it's hard to envisage them working complete wonders after the injuries he's had. The rest of them simply aren't good enough and the favourite simply needs to jump round and he wins."

The big one up next !! .. Apples Jade ?

OLBG Mares Hurdle Result:

1st - BENIE DES DIEUX 9/2 (SP)
2nd - Midnight Tour 33/1
3rd - Apple's Jade 1/2f

217 tip comments on the OLBG Mares Hurdle with 106 on the slightly disappointing fav Apple's Jade, 15 members stuck with the trainer jockey combo of Mullins and Walsh who have made this race their own since it's inception with Quevega, Vroum Vroum Mag etc...

pompeybuster12 made a solid case for the winner -

"APPLES JADE is seen by many as an absolute banker on day one and in fairness the case is a strong one as she looks to defend her crown , looks better than ever this year and the soft ground bolsters the case. BENIE DES DIEUX has developed into a very good chaser since coming to the Mullins team from France , hard to asses on French hurdling form but looking at her bloodline (by Great Pretender) one can expect a similar level with admittedly a small regression over hurdles , this puts her far closer to Apples Jade than a quote of 9/2 would suggest and this may not be the cakewalk that many expect."

The four miler up next time for a cup of tea after the first circuit, good luck!

National Hunt Chase Result:

1st - RATHVINDEN 9/2 (SP)
2nd - Ms Parfois 11/2
3rd - Sizing Tennessee 8/1

234 tip comments with 27 following the Mullins team on Rathvinden who was five lengths behind Faugheen in the Neptune here in 2014, certainly looked decent form despite plenty of water under the bridge since.

JIBBER JABBER has started the festival in good form on day 1 -

"This is a drop in Class for the Willie Mullins trained 10 year old Rathvinden who was 3rd in a 2m5f Grade 1 novice hurdle at this meeting 4 years ago before being off the track for a couple of years. However, he came back better than ever winning 2 Grade 3's before being 2nd in a Grade 1 and he was contesting Grade 1's in his last two races when unseating and being brought down. With tons of experience and class he looks the one to be on at 5/1."

Final race on day 1 coming up, a competitive looking Novices Handicap Chase, good luck.

Close Brothers Novices Handicap Chase Result:

1st - MISTER WHITAKER 13/2 (SP)
2nd - Rather Be 12/1
3rd - Rocklander 25/1
4th - Barney Dwan 15/2

275 tip comments on the lucky last with 50 members tipping Mick Channon's winner who pipped Rather Be in a cracking finish.

A good first day for Tommythetipper -

"Mister Whitaker looks decent in here brilliant run last time out at Cheltenham over same distance hitting career best RPR and top speed figures did enough to fend off Theatre Territory who also travelled well in the race which has franked his form after its most recent run upped to a class 1 grade 3 handicap and placed 3rd after being upped in trip which makes Mr Whitaker's form look great and expect him to be involved in here. Good luck."

That's it for the first day, a massive thank you to everyone for adding some great tip analysis and plenty of winners for OLBG followers.

We had a total in the region of 1800+ tip comments across the 7 races.

Time for breather before studying those form books ready for tomorrow !

The competition table should update shortly after 6.15pm and can be viewed here -

Plenty to play for still and best of luck to all tomorrow.
