Cheltenham Trainer and Jockey Stats 2022

Postby Shrews » Fri Jan 14, 2022 3:15 pm

I've managed to get them done early this year but my time will become more restrictive over the next few weeks, so I will get them posted now. Good luck if you use them!

Tuesday

*Points based on wins and top 5 places over last FIVE years in a format of:

Win - 10pts
2nd - 7pts
3rd - 6pts
4th - 2pts
5th - 1pt

They may not be 100% accurate, but shouldn't be too far out and should give a general idea of trainers and jockeys to focus on, and who to avoid.

** Note that any success for Denise Foster I have included under Gordon Elliott's figures

Supreme
Mullins 30
Elliott 24
Henderson 24
O.Murphy 13
De Bromhead 10
T.George 10
A.Murphy 7
Hayles 6

J.Kennedy 23
De Boinville 17
R.Walsh 17
Townend 12
N.Fehily 10
Davy Russell 9
J.Quinlan 7
R.Johnson 7

Mullins, Henderson and Elliott to focus on. But no surprises if De Bromhead has a decent one and others can get involved too. But the 4 top stables, plus top jockeys riding will give the best chances.

Arkle
De Bromhead 28
Henderson 27
Mullins 23
JP O'Brien 14
Jefferson 7
Tizzard 7
H.Whittington 6
T.O'Brien 6

De Boinville 27
A.Coleman 13
Townend 11
R.Walsh 10
B.Hughes 7
Cobden 7
JJ Slevin 7
M.Walsh 7

De Bromhead, Henderson and Mullins dominant. De Boinville for Henderson, Townend for Mullins. Rachel Blackmore rode the third place for De Bromhead last year. Aidan Coleman has had a winner and two top 5 places over the last 5 years for three different trainers (1st for De Bromhead, 4th for Whittington, 5th for Ellison), so he's worth noting.

3m 1f Chase
Sue Smith 23
Henderson 12
N.Williams 11
D.Bridgwater 10
Pipe 10
K.Bailey 9
George 8
B.Pauling 7
R.Hobson 7
Elliott 6

Danny Cook 13
J.McGrath 12
Scudamore 11
Brendan Powell 10
L.Kelly 10
Ryan Mania 10
D.Bass 9
Heskin 8
D.Jacob 7
J.Bowen 7

Sue Smith's figures skewed by Vintage Clouds, but maybe he can do it again? It also shows she can compete with the bigger stables if she has the right horse. This is wide open however, and dominated by the British. If an Irish trainer sees it as an opportunity to get one on the board then perhaps Elliott or De Bromhead rather than Mullins are more likely.

Champion Hurdle
Henderson 44
Mullins 34
De Bromhead 21
Cromwell 16
E.Williams 6
Elliott 6
A.King 1
H.Morrison 1
Twiston-Davies 1

Townend 23
Geraghty 20
A.Coleman 13
Blackmore 11
Fehily 10
M.Walsh 10
Davy Russell 7
PW Mullins 7
A.Wedge 6
BJ Cooper 6

Henderson, Mullins and De Bromhead target this, but the very best horses will shine through, even if it's for a lesser stable. Note that although Henderson has amassed 44 points in 5 years Nico De Boinville has not amassed any. All Henderson's points have come through Coleman, Geraghty, Davy Russell and Noel Fehily.

Mares
Mullins 58
Elliott 26
D.Skelton 18
De Bromhead 10
A.King 7
Mulholland 4
P.Kirby 2

Townend 28
H.Skelton 18
Blackmore 16
J.Kennedy 16
R.Walsh 16
BJ Cooper 11
Davy Russell 7
Danny Mullins 6
Fehily 2
Geraghty 2

Mullins is dominant but has not won this race in the last three years. Other Irish trained mares by Elliott and De Bromhead have managed to win, plus one for the Brits for Dan Skelton.

Fred Winter
G.Elliott 35
Henderson 14
Mullins 13
N.Williams 11
JP O'Brien 10

Johnson 10
M.Walsh 10
S.Flanagan 10
Scudamore 9
H.Skelton 8
De Boinville 7
N.Fehily 7
Townend 7

It looked like Elliott had started to target this race with a 1,3,4 in 2020, a 2nd in 2019 and a winner in 2018, but could only muster a 7th and 16th last year when with Denise Foster. I think it's likely he will have one ready this time around

3m 6f Chase
G.Elliott 16
Tizzard 12
Mullins 11
B.Pauling 10
Fleming 10
I R Ferguson 10
Henderson 7
Honeyball 7
Nicholls 7
Nolan 7

JJ Codd 20
Biddick 13
Mr B.O'Neill 13
J.Kennedy 10 ** In 2021 the professionals rode
O'Regan 10
PW Mullins 10
Waley-Cohen 9
Cobden 7 ** In 2021 the professionals rode
J.McGrath 7

Wide open, nobody really targets it, but a good amateur is a must, especially JJ Codd. The amateurs are back this time around and I wouldn't be surprised if JJ Codd was among the places, whoever he rides for.

J.Kennedy 10
M.Walsh 10
Geraghty 7
Cobden 6
De Boinville 6

Pretty open, Rachel Blackmore was 2nd in 2020 and won it last year, both for two different trainers. Could well be that she can get the best from a decent novice hurdler.

Festival Novices Ch
Henderson 37

Henderson does well in this. with Mullins the best of the Irish. Tizzard may have one that's worth considering. Davy Russell has been in the first 4 in four of the last 5 years and didn't race last year because of his injury. Worth noting whoever he's riding. Rachel Blackmore rode the winner last year and it could well be another for her.

Henderson does well enough with a 2/4-1-1-4, (5 places in 4 of the last 5 years), but it's an open race otherwise and a decent jockey can ride a winner in this. It doesn't need to be De Boinville riding for Henderson.

Queen Mother
Nicholls 28

Cobden 16
Townend 13
Fehily 10
Jacob 8
Brennan 6
J.Burke 6
P.Brennan 6

Another that's an open looking race, Paul Nicholls does well enough and he has had five horses in the top 4 over the last 5 years, including a 1-2 in 2020. But if any stable has a great 2m chaser then they're likely to do well.

Cross Country
Elliott 63

JJ Codd 16
Plouganou 10
M.Walsh 9
Davy Russell 7
Bass 6
Heskin 6
Johnson 6

Very strong for Elliott, but of course that's mainly due to the 1-1-2-1-1 figures of Tiger Roll. Donoghue of course the rider. Aged 12 now can he do it again? He won by 17l last year.

Grand Annual
Nicholls 18

Geraghty 10
Power 10
Scholfield 10
J McGrath 9
J.Moore 8

Jacob 7
M.Walsh 7

Wide open, the only slight bias is that Davy Russell seems to do well, with a winner and 2 places from his 4 rides over the last 5 years.

Bumper
Mullins 67
Elliott 31
D.Skelton 8
M.Mullins 7
Henderson 6

Honeyball 2

Townend 23
Danny Mullins 14
Blackmore 10
K Walsh 10
H.Skelton 8
PW Mullins 8
Geraghty 7
De Boinville 6
Johnson 6

From the worst race for dominance, to arguably the best. Mullins, with a 1-2 in three of last four years will likely have a few good enough to win this. Elliott with JJ Codd riding may be the only other to consider.

Thursday

Turners Novice Chase
Henderson 34
Mullins 32
Elliott 26
Hobbs 10
Tizzard 8
Gary Moore 6
Meade 6
Nicholls 2
Pauling 2

Jack Kennedy 16
De Boinville 12
Townend 12
Geraghty 10
R.Walsh 10
Russell 10
Power 8
PW Mullins 7
BJ Cooper 6

Between Henderson, Mullins and Elliott. No signs of any De Bromhead involvement yet. Daryl Jacob rides this well but no wins in the last 5 years. The top jockeys tend to win it (De Boinville, Russell, Geraghty, Jack Kennedy and Ruby Walsh)

Pertemps
Elliott 59
Nolan 10
PG Kelly 10
F.O'Brien 7
Hamer 7
George 6
Meade 6
Mrs J Harrington 6
Nicholls 6
De Bromhead 4

Davy Russell 27
Geraghty 27
BJ Cooper 10
Brennan 7
Gainford 7
Jack Kennedy 7
T.Bellamy 7
Cobden 6
M. Walsh 6
J.Burke 6

Elliott dominance, arguably the best dominance of the entire meeting. Had to play 2nd fiddle to Paul Nolan last year but clearly targets this race. Davy Russell and Geraghty do best, so worth taking a look what Elliott horse one of them rides.

Ryanair
Mullins 45
De Bromhead 27
V.Williams 14

Townend 18
Deutsch 14
B.Frost 12
Davy Russell 10
R Walsh 10
S.Flanagan 8
David Mullins 7
M.Walsh 7
Sheehan 7

The British horses can get involved in this, but Mullins and De Bromhead look most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if Rachel Blackmore starts to put her stamp on the race with a 1-3-4 in this race over the last three years.

Stayers
Mullins 34
Lavelle 16
Cromwell 10
R.Curtis 10
Elliott (Foster) 8

A.Coleman 10
Danny Mullins 10
Wedge 10
Colliver 8
BJ Cooper 7
M.Walsh 7
Power 7

Mullins won in 2017 and 2018 but no winners since with Cromwell, Curtis and Lavelle all having winners. Elliott had two in the top 5 last year, but I think this shows that any stable has a good chance in this if they've got a great staying hurdler. Jockeys don't necessarily need to be of the highest calibre.

Plate
Elliott 18
Henderson 13
Emmet Mullins 10
Meade 10

BJ Cooper 10
Gainford 10
L.Kelly 10
Sheehan 10
H.Skelton 8
Bargary 7
J.Kennedy 7
Jacob 7
Jamie Moore 7

Nobody dominates, everyone has a chance. If one of the top stables decides to target this, then it's likely to be Gordon Elliott.

Dawn Run
Mullins 58
De Bromhead 17
Elliott 15
A.King 7
F.O'Brien 7

Danny Mullins 10
Fehily 10
Jacob 10
Walsh 10
BJ Cooper 7
Brennan 7
J.Kennedy 7

Mullins with a good dominance in this, with 4 of the last 5 winners. Drew a blank last year where De Bromhead had the 1-2. It does seem to be a race where more than one from a big stable can get involved. No jockey dominance although Robbie Power has had the 2nd in the last two runnings for two different stables.

Fulke Walwyn
Elliott 26
Greatrex 16
H.Oliver 14
Edmunds 10
T.Walsh 10
PG Kelly 8
Longsdon 7

Alex Edwards 14
Waley-Cohen 12
G.Andrews 11
J.Kennedy 10
R. James 10
PW Mullins 7
JJ Codd 6
Cobden 6

An open enough race, although Elliott has won the last two. The decent amateur jockeys do best.

Geraghty 8
Scudamore 7
Danny Mullins 6
H.Skelton 6

The British can get involved (Pipe 2nd last year, Henderson won in 2019, Hobbs won 1n 2017) but Mullins and Elliott have proven best for the Irish and De Bromhead showed he was the new kid on the block for the Irish when 2nd in 2020 and winning last year. No surprises that the best Irish jockeys top their table.

County
Mullins 37
Henderson 21

B.Andrews 10
H.Skelton 10
Sexton 10
Gainford 7
H.Reed 7
David Mullins 6
JJ Slevin 6

Mullins has done best in this but drew a top 5 blank last year where the Elliott horses came to the fore. It could well be that Elliott is targeting this more. Henderson and Skelton do best for the Brits, but no surprises if Mullins bounces back this year. No dominance with the jockeys.

Albert Bartlett
Mullins 31

M.Walsh 11
Blackmore 10
Cobden 10
De Boinville 8
BJ Cooper 7
David Mullins 7

JJ O'Neill 7

Mullins is the most likely once again, but plenty can get involved in this. Whoever Townend rides looks the key for Mullins.

Gold Cup

The Irish have done best in this, but Henderson and Tizzard for the Brits have shown they can compete. A 1-2 for De Bromhead last year signalled his arrival on the scene

The Nicholls figures came from 2017 and 2018 but he's drawn a top 5 blank for the last three years. The Rowleys can be competitive, especially with Alex Edwards riding.

Mares Chase
1 Mullins Townend
2 Mullins M.Walsh
3 Elliott (Foster) J.Kennedy
4 Mullins Hayes
5 Hogan JJ Slevin

Only last years race to go on, but Mullins again and the one with Townend riding is probably the best of them

Martin Pipe
Elliott 43

JJ O'Neill Jnr 10
McInerney 8
Ben Jones 7

Lorcan Williams 7

Elliott is dominant in this and JP O'brien has a 3-0-1-3-0 record so those two clearly target the race although Mullins won it last year!

A summary

Top races where the trainers have a dominant record

* Note - the tables below don't take into account the Mares Chase on the Friday which has only been run once.

1. Pertemps - Elliott - a score of 59 but 49 pts ahead of the next
2. Cross Country - Elliott - a score of 63 but 45 pts ahead of the next **However much of this is due to Tiger Roll, who maybe on the wane now (maybe!)
3. Dawn Run Mullins - a score of 58 but 41 pts ahead of the next
4. Bumper - Mullins- a score of 67 but 36 pts ahead of the next
5. Mares - Mullins- a score of 58 but 32 pts ahead of the next
6. Martin Pipe - Elliott- a score of 43 but 21 pts ahead of the next
7. Fred Winter - Elliott- a score of 35 but 21 pts ahead of the next
8. Ryanair - Mullins- a score of 45 but 18 pts ahead of the next

Races where trainers have the least dominant record (and therefore much more open)

1. Grand Annual - Nicholls - a score of just 18 and just 1pt ahead of the next
2. Ultima 3m1f Chase - Sue Smith - a score of 23 and an ok 10 pts ahead of the rest, but this is due to one horse and the rest of the trainers are very open
3. 3m6f NH Chase - Elliott - a score of just 16 and just 4pts ahead of the next
4. Festival Plate - Elliott - a score of just 18 and just 5pts ahead of the next
5. Gold Cup - Mullins - a score of 29 and just 3pts ahead of the next
6. Fulke Walwyn - Elliott - a score of 26 and an ok 10 pts ahead of the rest, but not dominated by three trainers (see below)
7. Ballymore - Elliott - a score of 27 and just 4 points ahead of the rest, but more dominated by three trainers (see below)
8. Arkle - De Bromhead - a score of 28 and just 1 point ahead of the rest, but dominated by three trainers

Table that shows a race where three trainers are dominant

1. Bumper - Mullins - 82% of the points come from the top 3 (more significant is the points mainly come from the first two - Mullins and Elliott, especially Mullins)
2. Mares - Mullins - 79% of the points from Mullins, Elliott and Dan Skelton (but mainly Mullins)
3. Champion Hurdle - 76% from Henderson, Mullins and De Bromhead
4. Turner - 72% from Henderson, Mullins and Elliott
5. Dawn Run - 71% from Mullins, De Bromhead and Elliott (but mainly Mullins)
6. Cross Country - 75% from Elliott, Cottin and Bolger BUT Clayeux is just 1 point behind. Don't forget Tiger Roll skews the figures for Elliott
7. Ryanair - 67% from Mullins, De Bromhead and Venetia Williams
8. Arkle - 66% from De Bromhead, Henderson and Mullins

Jockeys

The top 8 scores for jockeys

1. Donoghue 37 - Cross Country
2. Townend 28 - Mares Hurdle
3. De Boinville 27 - Arkle
4. Davy Russell 27 - Pertemps
5. Codd 26 - Bumper
6. Townend 26 - Gold Cup
7. Davy Russell 25 - Festival Novices
8. Townend 24 - Albert Bartlett

Other notables
A.Edwards in the Foxhunters 23
Meyer in the Martin Pipe 23
Jacob in the Turner Novices 23
