Euro 2016 - Outsiders To Make It Out Of the Group Stage

Postby nors » Thu Apr 28, 2016 9:06 am

Which of the following if any will qualify for Knockout Stages Euro 2016?

Which country is your best bet to qualify
Romania (1.83), Albania (3)
Wales (1.95), Slovakia (2.25)
Ukraine (2), N Ireland (3.75)
Czech Republic (2.45), Turkey (2.45)
Sweden (2.85), Republic of Ireland (3.55)
Iceland (2.35), Hungary (3)

As hosts, France qualify automatically. They will be joined by 23 qualifiers and the teams will be drawn into groups of four, with the six group winners, six group runners-up and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 16 when it becomes a knockout competition.

I can see Sweden qualifying for the knockout stages
I think they are stronger than their first game opponents Republic of Ireland and if they can gain three points from that fixture they will be ahead of Italy or Belgium or possibly both if that fixture ends in a draw.

In the 2nd fixture Sweden meet Italy, just assuming both these teams have won their opener we could see a game where both sides would be quite defensive as a draw would suit both, even if Italy draw their first game we could see a similar scenario as a win against Ireland in their last fixture would see Italy with five points and good enough to go through

If Belgium draw with Italy and beat Ireland this would see them on four points and probably needing a win against the Swedes in the last game to finish 2nd

If the Swedes are already on four points then a draw would be good enough in the final game

If Belgium do need to win then they will have to push forward as the game goes on. This would leave them vulnerable to counter attacking from the Swedes and if they were to concede first this would make life very difficult and possibly not a good enough group record to finish as best placed 3rd team

Of course, all the above scenarios may not even happen but at the odds for the Swedes to qualify for the knockout stage I am happy to take Sweden as my best outsider

We still have a few weeks to go until the tournament starts and their are possibilities players from all teams could get injured and miss out so peoples thoughts can change but as it stands it is Sweden for me

Iceland for me.

I am still not totally convinced that Portugal should be Even money and i certainly cannot see them winning all 3 Group Games

I'm going to say Turkey, i think they can get a result against Croatia in the opening match, simply because Croatia are playing their warm up games against Moldova and San Marino, two really weak choices to prepare them for the tournament. Plus Turkey's fans demand so much from their national team,i think they will do well after the way they qualified, they have nothing to lose.

Wales did really well in qualifying and are capable of beating both Russia and Slovakia, but they will maybe struggle in defence against better opposition, i still fancy them to reach the 2nd round though.

Finally, Iceland, they have insanely underrated player in Sigurðsson, he is great at set pieces and scores regularly, 1 in 3 for both club and country. I think they can compete with all 3 teams in their group and can certainly qualify.

Rep of Ireland are always competive no matter who they they play and are capable of causing an upset having a win and draw vs Germany in qualifying. The last time they lost by more than 1goals was a friendly summer 2014 v Portugal.
They play Italy who your never quite sure which Italy will show up. Belgium a good team but fitness worries around Kompany and Hazard out of form. And Sweden a ok team but bit if a 1man team.
Every game I would be thinking that Ireland can get a point.

My bet goes on Romania here. Since 2013 Romania lost a single game, they qualifed here being undefeated with an amazing defence (2 goals conceded in 10 games) and except the games from qualies they also played against Argentina, Italy or Spain and they managed to not lose (very important all of them played with their first eleven).
Romania is in the same group with France, Swiss and Albania so they have good chances to win even 6 points. Swiss is out of form, they lost 3 games from the last 4 played and also in qualies they lost 3 games from 10, while Albania...well is Albania, pretty much the lowest team who will be in France.

Iceland lead the poll on teams to make it out of the group.

Do we have anyone who knows Icelandic football and can give readers some more insight?

I think Wales can get past Russia. Austria look vulnerable to Ice land or Hungry.

With 4 3rd best sides also going through I believe Romania look capable of progressing judging from their recent results and Wales as they look capable of beating the Slovaks and Russia don't have a good record at major tournaments since the USSR days.
